GEOL3010/5017 Ore Deposits - Literature research assignment

EXPLANATION OF EXERCISE
Tasks:
1.

Acquire and assess ore deposits literature on all types of uranium deposits in Australia

2.

Prepare a descriptive geological model for these deposit types, presented as a full-page table, to
compare and contrast the geological characteristics of these deposits. Your table will have
separate rows for each geological characteristic, and one column for each uranium deposit type.
Refer to Moon, Whateley and Evans, Introduction to Mineral Exploration, pp. 42-43 for an
example. References for the information cited should be included in each table cell.

3.

Using two additional tables, present genetic (empirical) and exploration model for these deposit
types. These tables will again have one column for each uranium deposit type, and references in
each table cell.

4.

Assemble your work from tasks 1-3 into a brief report. The report will include an abstract
(summary) of your primary findings. It will also contain an introduction, comprising background
information on Australian uranium deposits. In the discussion section, expand on your findings
presented in the tables, and include illustrations. The report should conclude with a statement of
the variability of uranium mineralisation styles in Australia and the influence of this variation on
exploration strategies.

Report format
The results of your literature research are to be presented in the format of an industry report. It should
be succinctly written and must be no more than 6 pages of text (1.5 line spacing, typed). The report
must have a title page, contents page, a comprehensive list of all references cited in the report, and
appendices of tables and figures. These pages are not included in the 6 pages of text.
The report should be set out as follows:
1.

Abstract (max. 200 words)

2.

Introduction (approx. one page)

3.

Discussion

4.

Conclusions (max. 100 words)

5.

References

6.

Appendix I: Descriptive, empirical and exploration models (tables)

7.

Appendix II: Illustrations referred to in text

Descriptive information in the report should be supported by reference to legible illustrations (figures
and tables), all accompanied by informative captions.
Figures and Tables (not included in the 6 pages) are best presented at the end of the report, after the
references and before any appendices. Each figure or table must be referred to within the text. Do not
try to insert figures and tables within the text. Photocopied tables and figures must be legible. Each
table or figure must have its own descriptive caption and must include the source of that illustration.
References must be thoroughly cited in the text. ALL references cited must be included in the
References section of the report using the same reference format as the Australian Journal of Earth
Sciences. Remember, this is a review of the literature and therefore you MUST have an extensive list
of references (10 or more peer-reviewed articles).
Focus on journal articles and peer-reviewed book compilations, and avoid using textbooks or websites
as sources of information. Do not refer to lecture notes.
