Battery Impedance and Load Testing Techniques

In this seminar, you will see that a battery plays a very critical role and is a complex
electro-chemical device. Terms and definitions associated with batteries and battery
components will be reviewed and discussed along with a review of various failure
modes. Batteries require maintenance and care to ensure their state of health.
Different levels of maintenance, various testing methods along with data analysis
will be discussed. We will also review NERC PR-005-1 and PR-005-2 Draft.
Basic Testing, Reading Prints, Making the Connection
We test HV Breakers to make sure they are still operating up to par so that when
they are called upon by relays to isolate precious capital investments .they will.
With today's variety in breaker design and applications, it may be difficult to know
where to connect your Breaker Timer. Basic breaker operations along with
open/close control circuit diagrams will be illustrated.
First Trip Testing
What if your breaker has been in the field for 5 years and has not been tested?
What if it has never even operated during that time? You may want to perform a
test the very first time you trip that breaker and capture that data. First trip testing
with coil current monitoring will be discussed.
Static Resistance Measurement (SRM)/Dynamic Resistance Measurement (DRM)
The Static Resistance Measurement (SRM) is a technique to identify switchgear
breakdowns caused by high contact resistances across bus bar joints, breaker
contact points and isolators. Dynamic Resistance Measurement (DRM) is a test
method used as a diagnostic and analysis tool. One of the main objectives of the
DRM technique is to determine the length of the arcing contact. The importance of
these tests will be discussed in further detail.
HV (High Voltage), EHV (Extremely High Voltage), GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear),
GCB (Generator Circuit Breaker) Applications

Any of these scenarios could cause a bead of sweat to pop up on the brow of any
user when confronted with performing the appropriate tests. We will look at using
Dynamic Capacitance Measurement (DCM) as a method of testing a breaker when it
is not practical to lift one ground. This key factor to performing these tests safer,
and more efficiently will be addressed.
Vibration
By recording the vibration signature of a breaker's operation, you collect data that
can be used for an efficient and non-invasive comparison in an on-line test at a later
stage. Mechanical vibrations from the operating mechanism and breaker chamber
can be identified and changes in time and magnitude reveals if something internal
has changed that requires an off-line maintenance test. We'll show you how.
Test Plans and Reporting
How do you know if you are measuring the breaker to the correct manufacturer and
standard specifications? A correct test plan with well-defined parameters is a
necessity for producing reliable and accurate results. Variable parameters such as
speed calculation points, pulse times, and others will be discussed along with
interpretation of the results.
Advancements in condition analysis and assessment of Power Transformers
Transformer Turns Ratio (TTR)
Every transformer is made up of a set number of turns on the primary side relative
to the number of turns on the secondary side. Do you have the right equipment to
test your transformers for possible damage? We'll help you figure it out.
Power Factor
Insulation is crucial for maintaining engineered distances between live parts and
ground potential. Power factor insulation testing can help determine your
equipment's acceptable limits. We will be available to help you understand the test
terminology and testing procedures so you can determine when preventative action
should be taken.
Sweep Frequency Response Analysis (SFRA)
When transformers are moved or when they experience a large through fault,
mechanical deformations can appear within the transformer. The best way of
identifying issues before they become a problem is to perform a Sweep Frequency
Response Test, and compare the results with previous tests or manufacturer results.
Discussion will include how to properly use sweep frequency analysis for
transformer inspection.
IDAX (Insulation Diagnostic Analyzer) Technology

The IDAX technology provides a new, reliable, and convenient way to assess
moisture in transformer insulation. In this segment we will look at factors that can
improve the useful life of your transformers and help you avoid catastrophic failures
caused by moisture or contamination in your transformers.
Data Collection, Trending, and Analysis
We'll share insight on how many companies are coping with the new NERC (North
American Electric Reliability Corporation) and FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission) and data collection, and management requirements!
Sessions will include show and tell demonstrations on the practical aspects of
ensuring reliability including common methods and practices with applicable test
equipment. You will have one-on-one interaction with industry experts and whether
you are a customer, a partner, or an industry expert, our event is created
specifically to bring together the industrial community to share knowledge,
exchange ideas, and realize its full potential.
Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity to ask questions specific to your
maintenance and testing needs.
