informational message. We want to let you know about the
upcoming weekly themes and monthly projects as well as to remind

restart mail. Most of you have been good about using the listserv
address to take care of these administrative tasks on your own,
leaving us with more time to write better lessons and correct your
homework. Thanks! We appreciate it.
The NorWord list currently has 1166 subscribers, and you represent
37 different countries. September should be an active time for the
list since the high school and college students will be returning
to campus and be back on-line.

LESSON FORMAT:
During the week the lessons consist of a phrase of the day, its
pronunciation, its meaning, a grammar topic, short texts written
by subscribers, and two short news items from P4 Radio in Norway.
There is also a special section in each lesson with rotating
topics: Culture Corner (Monday), Internet Corner (Tuesday),
Language Corner (Wednesday), Book Corner (Thursday), and the
Homework Corner (Friday). The Saturday lessons will be very
flexible so that we can use them to send you some Norwegian news,
short texts written by Norwegians about their daily lives, or
some projects done by Norwegian classes throughout the world.
If you have feedback or suggestions for us regarding the lessons,
we would appreciate hearing from you. Send to <naarsvol@gac.edu>.
----------------------------------------------------------------SPECIAL PROJECTS:
During September, we will be soliciting contributions to the
NorWord lessons from Norwegian classes. The classes could create
the whole lesson for a Saturday, or contribute to smaller sections
of a lesson during the week, such as the Culture Corner, Book
Corner, Internet Corner, or Language Corner. In this way, students
in Norwegian classes will have a larger audience for their writing
and be able to make some contacts with people learning Norwegian
from around the world. If you are a student in a Norwegian class,
I would appreciate it if you would pass along this information to
your teacher. If you are a teacher, please contact me via e-mail
<naarsvol@gac.edu>, and I will send you more detailed information
about this project.
We have also been corresponding with a teacher and students at
a Norwegian college which has a program for preparing Norwegians
to teach Norwegian as a Second Language. Starting in September,
they will be providing some material for the NorWord lessons
and/or be functioning as on-line tutors. If any of you know
any other native Norwegians who would like to submit material for
the lessons or be an on-line tutor, please contact me via e-mail
<naarsvol@gac.edu>. We are especially interested in soliciting
short texts written by Norwegians of all ages about all aspects
of their everyday lives, such as hometown, leisure activities,
work, school life, holidays, eating habits, homes, family, etc.
It would be a fun project for school classes in Norway as well as
for individuals.
In the spring, we compiled a list of people interested in
corresponding with each other via e-mail. We plan to do this
again, but will wait until mid-September or the beginning of
October so we can include the college students who join the list
when they return to school.
----------------------------------------------------------------NORWORD SUBSCRIBERS:
The NorWord subscribers are a diverse group, and we have tried to
design the lessons so that they have something to offer to people
at different levels and with varying amounts of time to invest in
learning Norwegian. We have a large number of beginning learners
who are doing their best to learn the basics of Norwegian language,

but we also have a relatively large group of intermediate and


advanced learners who are using the lessons to help them review
and keep their Norwegian up to date. Some of the subscribers
spend quite a bit of time on each lesson, contribute homework to
the lessons on a regular basis and correspond with other
subscribers, while others have just time enough to take a quick
look at the lessons in the morning before work.
We appreciate your participation in this list and encourage you
to use it in any way that it fits for you.

The arrival of fall in many countries means cooler temperatures,
the start of school, and the end of the carefree days of summer.
In Norway, the fall season starts a little earlier since school
begins in mid-August and the cooler temperatures come soon after.
As it progresses, fall can be a beautiful season in Norway with
sunny days, cool nights, and the leaves turning intense shades of
red, yellow, brown, and orange. Yet, fall can also be cold, windy,
and rainy. And the days become shorter in a hurry, given the
northern location of Norway.

Jeg heter Bart, og jeg bor i en forstad soer for San Jose i staten
California. Jeg bor i et hus som er paa omtrent 150 kvadratmeter
(kvm). Vi har en liten hage rundt huset, og vi har plantet gress
og noen blomster. Fordi det blir varmt her om sommeren, installerte
vi luftkondisjonering for flere aar siden.
Det er et typisk hus med fire sovevaerelser, to bad, ei TV-stue,
og et kombinert kjoekken og stue. For det meste bruker vi stua
fordi det er hyggelig og rolig der inne. Det er her vi leser
avisen og boeker og drikker kaffe. Vi har et bord der inne hvor vi
spiser middag. Langs den ene siden av kjoekkenet staar det en
kjoekkenbenk, og vi sitter paa hoeye stoler og spiser frokost og
lunsj ved denne benken. Vi har hverken svoemmebasseng eller badstue
fordi slike luksuser er dyre, og og vi har ikke plass i hagen.
Da vi flyttet inn i 1973, hadde vi 5 barn. Naa har alle barna
flyttet ut, og vi har hele huset for oss selv. To av de fire
sovevaerelsene er naa arbeidsvaerelser for kona mi og meg. De
fleste husene her i staten California har ikke underestasjer eller

EXTRAORDINARY MEETING IN THE PROGRESS PARTY
(P4): The Progress Party is receiving strong reactions after the
newspaper Dagbladet revealed today that the party's parliamentary
representative OEystein Hedstroem participated in a meeting with
leading racists and nazis. The party's central working committee
is now evaluating this afternoon how they are going to respond to
the disclosure. One conclusion can be that the Progress Party will
ask the parliamentary representative to resign from the party.
According to the newspaper Dagbladet, Hedstroem spoke warmly
at the meeting yesterday about cooperation between the Progress
Pary and the groups against immigration.

Norwegian sentences often start with the pronoun "det (it, there)."
If a predicate adjective follows the verb in such sentences, the
adjective receives the neuter -t ending since "det" is the neuter

(P4): Mer enn hver femte nordmann er naa i besittelse av mobiltelefon -- og Norge ligger dermed paa verdenstoppen naar det

gjelder antallet mobiltelefoner pr. innbygger. Telenor Mobil


regner med at det vil vaere over 1 million mobiltelefonbrukere i

SPISEFORSTYRRELSER
(P4): Minst 40.000 unge mellom 14 og 19 aar lider av mer eller
mindre alvorlige spiseforstyrrelser her i landet. Ni av ti er
jenter. I loepet av ukene som kommer skal en prosjektgruppe reise
rundt paa norske skoler for aa presentere et forebyggende opplegg

BEST IN THE WORLD IN CELLULAR PHONES
(P4): More than every fifth Norwegian is now in possession of a
cellular phone -- and so Norway is the best in the world when it
comes to the number of cellular phones per inhabitant. Telenor
Mobil expects that there will be over 1 million cellular phone
users in Norway in the near future.
EATING DISORDERS
(P4): At least 40.000 young people between 14 and 19 years are
suffering from more or less serious eating disorders here in the
country. Nine of ten are girls. In the course of the weeks ahead,
a project group will travel around to Norwegian schools to
present a preventive program aimed especially at teachers,
students, and health personell. Today, completely new statistics
based on a study done among 6th - 9th grade classes in Buskerud
will be made public, according to Aftenposten.

Jeg har nettopp meldt meg paa NorWord og har tenkt aa presentere
meg. Jeg heter DeLayna, jeg er foedti staten Kentucky, oppvokst i
Las Vegas og naa jobber i den norske avdelingen av WordPerfect Corp.
i Orem, Utah. For seks aar siden tjente jeg misjon i Norge som en
representant for Jesu Kristi Kirke av Siste Dagers Hellige. Naa
proever jeg aa beholde spraaket saa godt som jeg kan, og ser frem
til aa laere mer om det! Jeg har fem soesken, fire broedre og en
soester. Naar det gjelder meg selv, saa liker jeg aa gaa i teater
og pleier aa spille minst en rolle selv hvert aar. I fjor spilte
jeg i et skuespill som heter "You Can't Take It with You." Det var
saa morsomt! Det handler om en rar familie -- hvert av
familiemedlemmene er "sitt eget jeg" og de har en hel masse med
forskjellige interesser. Jeg spilte den yngste datteren i familien,
den eneste normale typen i stykket. Hun har forelsket seg og er
redd for at hennes kjaereste ikke skal trives hos familien

(P4): Norway beat the Czech Republic tonight in the important
Olympic qualifying game in soccer. The score at the break was
1-0 with the Czech Republic in the lead, but Norway came back
with goals by Steffen Iversen and Petter Rudi -- the last one
just a minute before the end of the game.
USA MOST COMPETITIVE
(P4): The USA and Singapore still have the most attractive and
competitive economies in the world. Norway is in 11th place,
while Sweden has dropped from 10th to 15th place since last year.
These are the results of a 1995 report from an international
institute for leadership development in Switzerland. Japan, which

Vi bor i Vancouver, Canada, og det maa vaere den dyreste byen i
hele landet. Jeg tenker ofte paa hvor godt familien vaar ville
trives hvis vi hadde raad til aa bygge et stort hus. Huset ville
ha mange rom fordi vi trenger mye plass. Jeg leser bokfoering om
kvelden saa jeg trenger ett rom hvor det ville vaere veldig stille
og rolig. Soennen min er tre aar, og han maatte ha sitt eget rom
hvor han kunne leke og lage mye braak. Kona min kunne tenke seg
ett hobbyrom hvor hun kunne arbeide i fred med haandarbeidet sitt.
I kveld er det Lotto-kveld i Canada og gevinsten er ti millioner
dollar. Man vet jo aldri! Jeg maa ikke glemme at jeg ogsaa ville
gjerne ha et hobbyrom i kjelleren fordi det er saa mange ting vi

(P4): Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland condemns the French
nuclear test explosion in the Pacific Ocean late last night. The
Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the French charge
d'affaires, to deliver a sharp protest against the test explosions.
Several countries have recalled their ambassadors, and there have
been demonstrations at the French embassies around the world.
SIGNS OF DINOSAURS FOUND IN SOUTH AFRICA
(P4): Signs of dinosaurs which lived for approximately 210 million
years ago, have been found in a national park in South Africa.
This type of dinosaur was from 8 to 10 meters tall -- and had a
long tail, a big body, and a little head.

Hei! Jeg kjoepte en tomannsbolig i Toledo, Ohio i 1983. Den ligger
ca. 100 meter fra grensa mellom Michigan og Ohio. Jeg bor paa en
side av tomannsboligen, og jeg leier ut den andre siden. Hver side
har et allrom, to soverom, et bad og WC. Tomannsboligen har bare
en etasje og den er bygd av murstein. Det er ikke noe droemmeslott
men den har sine skattefordeler. Paa min side av tomannsboligen
har jeg gjort om et soverom til ei datastue, men den mest merkbare
tingen ved boligen min er at det er boeker overalt i huset. I
bokhyller, i esker, i kott og paa bord. Boeker om datamaskiner,
matte, spraak, filosofi, teologi, litteratur, sport, vitenskap,
kunst, osv. Jeg har et bibliotek, ikke et hus! Huset er i den

CAR GIANT TO LISTA
(P4): Lista will get 250 new jobs when the American car part
manufacturer A-CMI invests 260 million crowns in a new factory.
Elkem Aluminum at Lista will be a joint owner of the factory and
is going to supply aluminum. A-CMI wants to establish production
in Europe in order to be able to furnish the European car industry

with aluminum parts.

(P4): Carl I. Hagen kan komme til aa vaere den partilederen som
smiler bredest naar stemmene er talt opp valgnatta. Det tror
samtlige meningsmaalingsinstitutter som har maalt den politiske
temperaturen foran kommune- og fylkestingsvalget. Venstre kan bli
den andre valgvinneren, mens Sosialistisk Venstreparti og
Senterpartiet peker seg ut som taperne. Hoeyre stamper litt i
motvind, men vil i likhet med Kristelig Folkeparti og
Arbeiderpartiet trolig faa et resultat de kan vaere brukbart
fornoeyd med.
NEI TIL MUSLIMSK SKOLE I OSLO
(P4): For tredje gang har Tron Ali Linstad faatt nei fra byraadet
i Oslo til aa etablere en muslimsk skole. Linstad fikk i gaar

avslag paa soeknaden om etablering av en muslimsk videregaaende


skole paa Toeyen, skriver Arbeiderbladet. Aarsaken til byraadets
avslag er at skolens fagplaner ikke er i traad med reform-94.
Tidligere har Linstad soekt om aa opprette en muslimsk grunnskole
og en muslimsk folkehoegskole.
GOLF
(P4): Golf-proffen Oeyvind Rojahn gikk den foerste runden paa
glimrende 66 slag i en 60000 pund-turnering utenfor Paris torsdag.
Nordmannen ligger paa delt tredjeplass, to slag bak den ledende
skotten Colin Montgomerie. 66 slag er fire under par paa banen,
og ble gjort under krevende forhold med regn og sterk vind. Jeg
gikk en meget bra runde, og er spesielt fornoeyd med naerspillet
og puttingen, sa Rojahn.

(P4): Carl I Hagen could be the party leader who is smiling the
broadest when the votes are counted on election night. That is
the opinion of all the polling institutes who have measured the
political temperature before the municipal and county election.
The Left (Liberal) Party could be the other election winner,
while the Socialistic Left Party and the Center Party look to be
the losers. The Conservative Party is fighting against the wind,
but will likely be relatively satisfied with the election results
just as the Christian People's Party and the Labor Party will be.
NO TO MUSLIM SCHOOL IN OSLO
(P4): For the third time, Tron Ali Linstad has had his plans for
establishing a Muslim school refused by the City Council in Oslo.
Yesterday, Linstad's application to establish a Muslim secondary
school in Toeyen was rejected, according to the newspaper
Arbeiderbladet. The reason for the council's refusal is that the
school's curriculum is not in line with the school reform of 1994.
Earlier, Linstad has applied to establish a Muslim elementary and
junior high school and a Muslim folk high school.

The Norwegian has a share of third place, two strokes behind the

on the course and was done under difficult conditions with rain
and strong wind. -- I had a really good round, and am especially
satisfied with my chipping and putting, said Rojahn.

The Norwegian K-12 school system is in the process of a nationwide reform called Reform '94. Some of the highlights of this
reform are:
* First graders will start school when they are six years old
instead of the current start age of seven beginning in 1997-98,
and there will be a change from a nine year to a ten year
compulsory school.
* Rewritten national curriculum with specific goals in each
subject for each grade level.
* The current subject of Christianity will be expanded to include
more content about other religions and philosophies of life.
Before, students could opt out of the Christianity course and
take a secular alternative on philosophies of life, but now all
students will have to take this course. There is heated debate
about this issue.
* Students who have completed the nine year compulsory school
have a right to a further three year education in a secondary
school.
* The vocational subjects have been improved in the secondary
school, resulting in an increase in the number of applicants in
these areas from 42 to 46 percent.

som TV2 presenterer i kveld. Paa maalingen oppnaar partiet 31,3
prosent og det er en tilbakegang paa 5.6 prosent fra Stortingsvalget i 1993. Direktoer Tore Bredal i MMI mener dette viser at

ELECTION DAY POLL
(P4): The Labor Party has a severe setback on an election day
poll which TV2 will present tonight. In the poll, the party gets
31,3 percent of the vote, and that is a decline of 5,6 percent
from the parliamentary election in 1993. Director Tore Bredal in
MMI thinks this shows that the glory days of the governing party
are definitely over. The Progress Party appears to be the winner
of the election. The party improves by 5,6 percent to 11,9 percent
in comparison to the last parliamentary election in 1993. The
Center Party loses 4,2 percent in comparison to the parliamentary
election. The preliminary prognosis shows that 65 percent of the
eligible voters participated in the election.
NORWEIGAN FILM WON AWARD IN VENEZIA
(P4): The Norwegian short film "Loneliness of the Depths" won
a prestigious award during the international film festival in
Venezia yesterday evening. The Norwegian production won the Geovani
Leoni Award, and along with that about 65 thousand crowns.
"Loneliness of the Depths" received the Amanda Award for best
short film last month.

THE ELECTION
((P4): The Socialistic Left Party had their following cut almost
in half in yesterday's local election, while the Progress Party
has reason to celebrate. The Socialistic Left Party appears to
have lost six percent, and has a following of 6.1. The Progress
Party has increased five percent to 12 percent. The Labor Party
has had a weak increase to 31.3, while the Conservative Party has
decreased 2.1 to 19.6 percent. The Center Party has had a small
decline to 12 percent, and the Christian People's Party has gone
slightly up to 8.6 percent. The Left (Liberal) Party has increased
its following to 4.7 percent, and the Red Election Alliance has
increased to 1.7 percent.
ELECTION COOPERATION
(P4): The election results can spur cooperation for an alternative
to the Labor Party at the parliamentary election in 1997. Comments
from the party leaders in the Conservative Party, the Christian
People's Party, and the Left Party make a three party cooperation
a realistic alternative in two years. Anne Enger Lahnstein and
the Center Party hope that the no-alliance from the European
Union conflict will recur before the election in 1997. No one

Jeg begynte aa laere norsk i 1985 da jeg flyttet til Norge med
familien min. Min far var i militaeret, og vi bodde paa Bekkestua i
Baerum i naerheten av Oslo. Da det ikke var noen amerikanske skoler
der fra 10. klasse, gikk jeg pa Berg Videregaaende Skole i Oslo
for 2. og 3. gymm. Jeg tok Artium (International Baccalaurreate) i
mai 1988.
Om hoesten 1988 flyttet vi fra Norge :-( til Bremerhaven i Tyskland.
Mens vi var i Bremerhaven, gikk jeg paa universitetet i Hamburg, og
leste skandinaviske spraak og litteratur. Jeg forlot universitetet
etter aa ha faatt "Vordiplom" (Bachelor's).
Deretter flyttet vi i 1991 til Giessen (litt nord for Frankfurt).
Jeg jobbet som tysklaerer ved de amerikanske skolene i omraadet, og
deretter paa et reisebyraa. Mens jeg jobbet pa reisebyraaet, tok jeg
opp studiet igen -- den gangen ved Boston University's Overseas
Program. Jeg fikk min MBA derfra.
Og naa bor foreldrene mine i USA, og jeg er fremdeles her i Tyskland.
Naa arbeider jeg for DHL Worldwide Express, men jeg foeler at tiden
er nesten kommet naar jeg vil flytte igen. Den gangen skal jeg vende
meg hjem igen til USA.
Jeg ville gjerne bli laerer igjen...helst for voksne, men i hvert fall

min. (Jeg har en engelsk bulldog og 2 katter...en av kattene er
en norsk skogkat som heter Ragnar)

MARI BOJNE RECEIVED MUSIC STIPEND
(P4): This morning, the Promotion Stipend from the Norwegian
Cassette Fee Fund was awarded for the seventh time. The stipend
of 700,000 crowns is awarded in order to help Norwegian artists
to start an international career. The Sami artist Mari Boine was
the lucky recipient this year, and was given the prize of
Cultural Minister Aase Kleveland.

Norwegian language classes from around the world. If you are in a
Norwegian class of some sort, ask your teacher if your class
could participate in this project. We would also like to send
lessons written by classes in Norwegian schools. If you know any
teachers in the Norwegian schools, tell them about the project and
have them contact me via e-mail <naarsvol@gac.edu>. The lessons
should be roughly the same length as the regular NorWord lessons,
and they should be in Norwegian with perhaps an introduction or
some explanation in English. Your class may choose a topic related
to the weekly theme or another topic related to the work you are
doing in class. Some examples of possible topics are:
1) an introduction of your class and your school;
2) an interview with a Norwegian on your campus or in your
community;
3) a description of an important Norwegian in politics, the arts,
sports, business, education, etc.
4) a review, description, or other writing assignment related to
a Norwegian work in film, literature, theater, visual arts,
music, etc.
5) a description or explanation of some aspect of Norwegian
grammar, language history, phonetics, etc.

6) a description of a geographical place in Norway (town, rural


area, city, county, region)
7) a description of a tourist attraction in Norway (museum,
art museum, amusement park, church, national park, natural
feature, etc.
6) any other topic on which your class wants to base its lesson.
A Norwegian class from St. Olaf College will start this feature
with a description of their class and their school. Send an
e-mail in response to the entire class by using this address

----------------------------------------------------------------Hei! Vi er en klasse paa 14 studenter som laerer norsk ved
St. Olaf College i Northfield, Minnesota, USA. St. Olaf er et
privat, luthersk college som ble grunnlagt av nordmenn i 1874.
I dag er det over 190 studenter som deltar i norskundervisningen
ved St. Olaf. De fleste av disse studentene tar tre semestre i
norsk spraak, men det er ca. 20 studenter som tar norsk mellomfag
(major). Vi har tre heltidslaerere og en deltidslaerer i
norskavdelingen, og det er ogsaa 15 studenter fra Norge som
studerer her. Noen av dem jobber i norskavdelingen som
hjelpelaerere.
Vi begynte aa laere norsk i vaarsemesteret 1995, og naa tar vi den
andre halvdelen av begynnerkurset. Dette semesteret bruker vi
laereboka "Norsk naa," og vi hoerer paa eventyr paa norsk paa
spraaklaboratoriet og leser artikler fra norske aviser og
tidsskrifter og fra Internett. Vi har ogsaa meldt oss paa
NorWord-lista. Laereren vaar heter Nancy Aarsvold, og det er hun
som skriver NorWord-leksjonene og vedlikeholder lista. I timen
liker vi best aa jobbe sammen i par og smaa grupper for da faar vi
anledning til aa oeve oss i norsk. Vi er spesielt interessert i
kunst, musikk, mytologi, moderne norsk samfunnsliv og historie.
I oktober kommer Kong Harald og Dronning Sonja paa besoek til
St. Olaf, og det gleder vi oss til!

Despite the increasing mobility of the population, Norwegian
ties to their extended family and home districts are remaining
relatively strong. While many Norwegians do not live close to
their homes and their extended family on a daily basis, many return
there during holidays and vacations.
The number of people in Norway living in long term relationships
has remained the same as in earlier years. However, the form of
these relationships has changed dramatically. The number of people
getting married has decreased, while the number of people living
together has increased. Young people especially seem to favor
living together over marriage. For example, among women ages 20-24,
30% are living with someone while only 22% are married. Many of
these couples, however, eventually marry, especially after the birth
of a child. As a result, among women ages 18-44, only 14% are living
with someone, 30% are single, and 56% are married. As in the United
States, divorce has increased greatly during the past 30 years so
that about one in three marriages end in divorce.
In Norway, children are valued highly, and they enjoy relatively good
living conditions. There are few families living in poverty, a fairly
high percentage of children live with both parents, and children have
their own national ombudsman to protect their interests.

THE FINAL RESULTS FROM THE SWEDISH EU ELECTION READY
(P4): In Sweden, the parties supporting the European Union har
suffered defeat during the election to the EU parliament. The
final results are now ready, and they show that the social
democrats hav had their worst election ever, while the
Environment Party is the winner of the election. The participation
in the election was a record low 41.3 percent.

FOTBALL, KVINNER -- VANT OVER SLOVAKIA
(P4): I en EM-kvalifiseringskamp i fotball for kvinner som ble
spilt i kveld, vant Norge hele 17-0 over Slovakia. Ingen andre
norske landslag i fotball har noensinne tatt en saa stor seier.
BOMBETRUSLER
(P4): Baade Oslo Sentralstasjon, Gardermoen Lufthavn og den

WOMEN'S SOCCER -- WON OVER SLOVAKIA
(P4): In a qualifying match in women's soccer for the European
Championship which was played tonight, Norway won 17-0 over
Slovakia. No other Norwegian national team in soccer has ever
won such a big victory.
BOMB THREATS
(P4): The Oslo Central Station, Gardermoen Airport, and the
northbound coastal steamer "Vesteraalen" have received bomb
threats during the course of the day and the evening. No bomb has
gone off, but the police and bomb experts plus bomb dogs are now
examining the actual areas. The police see a connection between
the threats in Oslo, but the threats against the coastal steamer
"Vesteraalen" are supposedly made by another person, and probably
have no connection with the bomb threats in Oslo.

This textbook package has been written for students who have had
one year of college-level Norwegian or its equivalent. It is
currently in use in second year Norwegian courses at St. Olaf
College, Augsburg College, University of Minnesota, and many other
institutions. This book could also be used for self-study because
both the introductions to the texts and the grammar explanations
are in English.
The textbook is designed to improve proficieny in all skill areas
-- reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The 16 chapters are
organized around themes which focus on concrete topics like self,
home, and family in the first half of the book and progress to
more abstract topics like cultural traditions, politics, and the
environment in the second half of the textbook. The reading
selections in the book are authentic texts, ranging in format from

short letters and interviews to folktales, song texts, excerpts


from contemporary literature, newspaper articles, etc.
The workbook contains a large selection of exercises to develop
skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The tapes
were recorded at St. Olaf College with author Margaret Hayford
O'Leary reading the texts and students from Norway recording the
listening exercises.

POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS express ownership or relationship. In
Norwegian, they have the following characteristics:

3) The possessive pronouns "my" and "your" agree in gender and

Hamar er en by hvor historien gaar helt tilbake til vikingtiden.
Den er fylkeshovedstad i Hedmark fylke. Under OL paa Lillehammer
skjedde det ogsaa mye paa Hamar. Hvem husker ikke Johan Olav Koss
med sin 10.000 meter paa tiden 13.30.55, og Dan Jansen sitt flotte
loep. Kunstloep foregikk ogsaa her. Hamar har nordens stoerste og
fineste svoemmeanlegg og i tillegg flere ishaller, fotballbaner og
et flott skianlegg. Hamar er en koselig by med torg, gaagate,
butikker, kafeer, museum, teater og kino. Som student i Hamar kan
man benytte seg av alt dette, men studentene har jo ogsaa mange
aktiviteter som de arrangerer selv. Krostyret soerger for at
fester blir holdt, idrettslaget tilbyr aktiviteter som fotball,
innebandy, aerobic, svoemming, volleyball og basketball. For de
som er interesserte i aa synge eller aa spille teater er det ogsaa
egne lag. I tillegg har skolen egen studentavis, egen studentradio
og en fotoklubb. I uke 40-41 har vi studentuke hvor vi noen av
dagene gjoer noe helt annet enn aa ha vanlig undervisning. Det blir
idrett, konserter, fester og mye moro! Alle planene er ikke helt
ferdige ennaa, men studentuka er noe alle studenter gleder seg til.
Hamar har utdannet laerere siden 1867, med unntak av perioden
1938-45. Dette aaret har skolen omtrent 1100 studenter. Denne
uken er det mart'n paa Hamar, da er det sirkus og tivoli i byen
og butikkene lokker med gode tilbud. Folk samles, bruker penger
paa unyttige ting og koser seg i det nydelige hoestvaeret.

PAVEN BLIR IKKE INVITERT TIL TRONDHEIM
(P4): Mellomkirkelig raad i Den norske kirke har bestemt at Paven
ikke skal inviteres til 1000-aarsjubileet i Trondheim i 1997.
Aarsaken er uenighet mellom den lutherske og den katolske kirke.
Uenigheten dreier seg blant annet om felles nattverd og ulikt syn
paa religioes laere. En invitasjon burde begrunnes med et
gjennombrudd i samtalene mellom de to kirkene, mener raadet.

THE POPE WILL NOT BE INVITED TO TRONDHEIM
(P4): The Interchurch Council in the Norwegian State Church has
decided that the Pope will not be invited to the 1000 year
anniversary (of Norway becoming a Christian nation) in Trondheim
in 1997. The reason is the disagreement between the Lutheran and
the Catholic Church. The disagreement revolves around a common
communion and different views on religious teachings, among other
things. The council thinks that an invitation should be based on
a breakthrough in the conversations between the two churches.

Hei! Hoesten er aarstiden jeg liker best. For noen aar siden naa
bodde jeg i staten Michigan, og hoesten var alltid veldig pen der.
Dagene i september og oktober var friske og klare med blaa himmel,
og bladene var mange forskjellige farger -- roede og brune, gule
og groenne. Det er flott aa gaa paa tur i skogen da. Her i staten
Oklahoma kommer hoesten senere, i november. Men her er det ikke
saa mange slags traer som i Michigan, og fargene er ikke saa fine.
Da jeg boode i Norge, var hoesten ogsaa flott. I Oslo-omraadet
var vaeret like fint som i Michigan om hoesten, og jeg likte aa
dra paa seiltur paa fjorden. Men i Stavanger og paa vestkysten
var hoesten ikke saa fin. Det var for det meste graatt, med noe
vind og regn. Da var det fint aa ta en tur til Kanarioeyene. I
august og september likte jeg aa sanke sopp. Jeg kunne alltid
finne nok kantareller til bruk i sauser og omeletter for hele
aaret.
I dag (22. september) fikk vi kaldt vaer for foerste gang i hoest
her i Oklahoma.Temperaturen var 3 grader Celsius i dag tidlig,
men snart blir det nok varmere igjen.

(P4): Norge skal fortsatt ha en stor rolle i fredsprosessen i
Midt-Oesten. Utenriksminister Bjoern Tore Godal mener avtalen som
ble inngaatt mellom PLO og israelrne i dag er et avgjoerende
skritt videre i gjennomfoeringen av Oslo avtalen. Den utvider
det palestinske selvstyret paa Vestbredden og betyr avslutningen
paa en 28 aar lang israelsk okkupasjon av de store arabiske
byene i omraadet.

SELF RULE AGREEMENT BETWEEN PLO AND ISRAEL
(P4): Norway will still have a large role in the peace process in
the Middle East. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Bjoern Tore
Godal thinks the agreement, which was entered into by the PLO
and the Israelis today, is a decisive step further in the carrying
out the Oslo Agreement. It expands the Palestinian self rule on
the West Bank and means the end of a 28 year long Israeli
occupation of the large Arabic cities in the area.

Selv om jeg har et norsk navn, er jeg ikke norsk; jeg er amerikaner.
Familien min reiste fra Nordfjord til Amerika i 1875. Jeg er den
foerste som har flyttet tilbake til Norge, og det skjedde fordi
jeg giftet meg med en flott norsk dame som heter Sigrid. Hun er
foedt i Morgedal i Telemark, og derfor snakker hun nynorsk. Hun

hjelper meg ganske mye med norsken min, men hun kan ikke bokmaal
saa godt. Derfor setter jeg stor pris paa hjelpen jeg faar fra
NorWord. Takk skal du ha!
Mitt navn er Eric Solibakke, og jeg er 57 aar gammel. Jeg er foedt
i staten Massachusetts i USA, men jeg har aldri bodd der. Familien
min flyttet rundt omkring i USA flere ganger. Siste stedet jeg
bodde i USA var Texas; der bodde jeg i 12 aar.
Jeg har vaert i Norge i nesten seks aar saa jeg har ingen
unnskyldning for aa ikke kunne norsk. Men jeg har ikke studert
norsk formelt paa skole. Herr doktor professor Aftenposten er
laereren min, for aa si det saann. I tillegg har jeg laert mye
fra amerikanske filmer med norsk tekst. Muntlig norsk gaar noksaa
bra, men jeg har aldri proevd aa skrive noe. Dette er foerste gang.
Vi bor i Oslo der Sigrid jobber som psykiatrisk sykepleier, og jeg
driver med MaHaBote veiledning, MaHaBote er et slags system for
analyse av personlige energier; den kommer fra Burma. Jeg skriver
ogsaa en bok om MaHaBote som jeg bruker som tekst i MaHaBote kurs.
Jeg laerer bort systemet til nordmenn slik at det blir i Norge
naar jeg drar om noen aar. Vi driver ogsaa et informasjonssenter
og moetested for Avatar Meher Baba som heter Meher Baba Kilden.
Her kan en kjoepe boeker, se paa videoer, eller moete opp med
andre for aa snakke om den aandelige stien. Vi drikker masse te,

SMAABARNSFORELDRE VIL VAERE HJEMME
(P4): Nesten halvparten av smaabarnsforeldrene i Stavanger ville
ha blitt hjemme med ungene i stedet for aa sende dem i barnehagen.
Det viser en undersoekelse som er gjort av Stavanger kommune
blandt samtlige smaabarnsforeldre i byen. I undersoekelsen gaar
det ogsaa fram at hele 80 prosent av de spurte er positive til
kontantstoette. Ordfoerer Leif Mosvaer sier til NRK-radio at
kommunen oensker aa sette igang forsoek med kontantstoette.
NORSK FILM VANT PRIS I SAN SEBASTIAN
(P4): Den norske filmen "Kjaerlighetens kjoetere" som er
regissert av Hans Petter Moland, vant juryens spesialpris i den
spanske filmfestivalen i San Sebastian. Filmen som handler om
tre menn som overvintrer paa Groenland, fikk prisen for innsatsen
til hovedrolleinnehaverne, Stellan Skarsgaard, Bjoern Sundquist
og Gard Eidsvold. Filmen har premiere i Norge 29. september.

PARENTS OF SMALL CHILDREN WANT TO BE AT HOME
(P4): Almost half of the parents of small children in Stavanger
wanted to have stayed at home with the children instead of sending
them to daycare/nursery school. This is shown by a study which
has been done in the municipality of Stavanger among all the
parents of small children in the city. In the study, it is also
evident that 80 percent of those asked are interested in receiving

cash support (instead of subsidies for daycare). Mayor Leif


Mosvaer says to NRK-radio that the municipality wants to start
a trial period with cash support to parents of small children.
NORWEGIAN FILM WON AWARD IN SAN SEBASTIAN
(P4): The Norwegian film "Kjaerlighetens kjoetere," which is
directed by Hans Petter Moland, won the judges' special award in
the Spanish film festival in San Sebastian. The film, which is
about three men who spend the winter on Greenland, received the
award for the performances by the lead actors, Stellan Skarsgaard,
BjoernSundquist, and Gard Eidsvold. The film has its opening night
in Norway on September 29.

BLADSENTRALEN STOPPER UKEBLADSALG
(P4): Administrerende direktoer Agnar Oevreboe, i Dagligvareforbundet reagerer paa at Bladsentralen vil stanse leveringen
av ukeblader til mindre forretninger over hele landet. Bladsentralen har varslet stans i leveringen til 1.500 forhandlere
fordi omsetningen er for lav. Oeverboe sier til P4 at dette er

THE MAGAZINE CENTRAL STOPS SALE OF MAGAZINES
(P4): The Administrative Director Agnar Oevrebo of the Grocery
and Commodities Association is upset that the Magazine Central
wants to stop delivery of magazines to smaller stores throughout
the whole country. The Magazine Central has notified 1,500
distributors about stopping the delivery because their sales are
too low. Oeverboe tells P4 that this is bad especially for stores
in outlying areas, and he wants to ask the Magazine Central to
find solutions for the most vulnerable places.

Mitt liv ved universitetet er ikke saa lett fordi jeg er i gang
med aa ta en doktorgrad i psykologi. Jeg har alltid en haug med
boeker og artikler som jeg maa lese gjennom, og det er ogsaa en
masse jeg maa skrive. Det er selvfoelgelig bra at jeg synes
psykologi er toeff.
En vanlig dag for meg begynner med aa staa opp tidlig, lese
avisen og spise frokost, og saa sykler jeg til kontoret ca. kl.
8.15. Etter at jeg har lest gjennom e-posten min, begynner jeg
aa lese statistikk, kognitivpsykologi, neuropsykologi eller data.
Jeg jobber paa min avhandling som tar opp bruk av teknologi i
undervisningen, saerlig MUDS og MOOs. Med kursene som jeg selv
tar og de jeg underviser har jeg det travelt dagen lang. Noen
dager gaar jeg paa forelesning kl. 8 om morgenen og er ikke
ferdig foer kl 21.30 om kvelden. Det er lange dager!

(P4): The self rule agreement for the West Bank, which was signed
today by Israel and the PLO in Washington, is being met with both
protests and celebration. In Hebron, several thousand Jewish
settlers have demonstrated against the agreement, while the
Palestinians tore down a fence around a refugee camp. In several
places, soldiers had to use tear gas and rubber bullets to
disperse both the celebrants and the demonstrators.

There are several COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS in Norwegian, the most


common being "og (and)," "men (but)," and "eller (or)." These
conjunctions are useful in making your writing smoother and more
connected. They are easy to use since they cause no changes in
word order.

There are also many SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS in Norwegian which
allow you to write in a more sophisticated manner. Some of the
most common ones are "fordi (because)," "hvis (if)," and "naar
(when)." These conjunctions cause changes in the word order of
the subject and the verb if they are placed first in the sentence,
but if they are in the middle of the sentence then they don't
affect the subject and the verb.

from Notodden Secondary School in Notodden, Norway. The students
have written about their class and their hometown, and they have
written short descriptions of themselves. They are just starting
to use the Internet in school, and their school is part of the

Vi er en gruppe elever som har valgt et engelskkurs. Kurset er
muntlig og det omfatter 3 timer i uka. Undervisningen bestaar
hovedsaklig av aa lese og oversette engelske tekster. I alt er vi
16 elever som kommer baade fra 2. og 3. klasse.

Notodden er en liten by som ligger i Telemark fylke. Det bor ca.
12.000 mennesker her. Byen ble grunnlagt i 1913. Grunnlaget for
dannelsen av byen var Tinnelva. Elva ga elektrisk stroem til
industrien i omraadet. Naa i de senere aar har mange industribedrifter blitt lagt ned, og arbeidsledigheten er hoey. Vi har et
spesielt saerpreg paa byen vaar, og det er individer som liker aa
kjoere opp og ned hovedgaten i vaar "trivlige" by. Dette kalles
for raaning. Dette er Notodden i et noetteskall.

Hei!! Jeg heter Cathrine Berge, og jeg er 18 aar gammel. Jeg er
foedt og oppvokst paa Notodden. Jeg gaar i tredje klasse allmenfag
paa Notodden videregaaende skole. Fordypningsfagene mine er matte
og biologi. Jeg har ingen jobb paa fritida, men jeg har drevet med
fotball, haandball og slalom. Dette sluttet jeg med naar jeg
begynte paa gymnaset. Ellers liker jeg aa vaere paa byen i helgene.
----------------------------------------------------------------Mitt navn er Eirill, jeg er ei 18 aar gammel jente fra Notodden -Europas bluesby nummer 1. Vaaren 1996 er jeg ferdig med gymnaset
og skal begynne p=E5 min videre utdannelse. Jeg har veldig lyst til
=E5 v=E6re student, eller aa jobbe i USA et aar. De to siste aarene har
jeg fordypet meg i matte, fysikk og kjemi. (I aar har jeg engelsk
ogsaa) Jeg synes de fagene jeg hadde valgt var svaert vanskelige aa
gjennomfoere ,derfor valgte jeg bort fysikk foer dette siste aaret.
Jeg tror nok jeg ville ha faatt bedre karakterer om jeg hadde valgt
andre fag (som en annen matte, samfunnskunnskap eller spraakfag)
I sommer arbeidet jeg i Telemark Sommarland. Det er en
fornoeyelsespark som ligger tre mil fra Notodden. Aa arbeide der
var veldig laererikt og jeg har planer om aa arbeide der ogsaa
neste sommer. I fritida mi spiller jeg fotball,men jeg er veldig
glad i aa trene og driver derfor ogsaa med andre sportslige
aktiviteter.(som sv=F8mming,trene p=E5 helsestudio og saa videre). Vi
vant akkurat kretsmesterskapet i fotball. Naar jeg ikke gjoer
lekser, spiller fotball, trener annen idrett eller organiserer
aarets russerevy,liker jeg aa vaere med gode venner. Gaa ut og

danse eller liknende. Jeg har veldig lyst til aa komme i kontakt
med noen av dere saa skriv da vel! Dette gjelder ogsaa Gunhild.
----------------------------------------------------------------Jeg heter Espen, er atten aar gammel og kommer fra Notodden. Dette
er siste aaret ved Notodden vidregaaende skole. Paa fritida jobber
jeg, fisker, hoerer paa musikk, er med kamerater og om vinteren
staar jeg paa snowboard. Foroevrig er jeg ofte aa se i storgata i
byen ( kjoerer opp og ned ), en saakalt raaner.
----------------------------------------------------------------Jeg heter Gunhild og er 18 aar. Jeg gaar i 3. klasse - allmennfag.
Linjefagene mine er kjemi og naturfagmatte. Paa fritida mi gjoer
jeg lekser, jobber (i gatekjoekken og som servitoer paa et
spisested.), staar telemark, trener og er med venner. Jeg var
aktiv langrennsloeper helt til i fjor, men jeg fant ut at treninga
etterhvert tok for lang tid.( Jeg trente 8-15 timer i uka). Etter
videregaaende har jeg tenkt aa studere biokjemi eller medisin. I
Norge er det utrolig hardt aa komme inn paa medisin, saa jeg maa
gaa et aar paa en skole i Oslo for aa forbedre karakterene mine.
Jeg har ogsaa tenkt paa aa ta et aar i utlandet- kanskje det blir
USA?! Jeg har lyst til aa komme i kontakt med noen av dere. Saa

smaa-jobber ved siden av skolen. Den ene har jeg bare om sommeren,
mens den andre er paa helaarsbasis. Jeg driver ogsaa litt med
jogging. I helgene tar jeg ofte en tur p=E5 byen med vennene mine.

Washington D.C. og til New York. Jeg bor i Heddal som er en del
av Notodden kommune. Notodden er kjent for sin aarlige Bluesfestival, artister som Johnny "Guitar" Watson har vaert her.
Notodden er ellers en liten by med 13.000 innbyggere. Paa skolen
er det ikke saa morsomt, men en maa bare igjennom det. Etter
allmenfag vil jeg begynne paa Politihoeyskolen.

heter jeg Rennie. Jeg liker aa hoere paa musikk, jeg liker
amerikanske biler spesielt corvette, jeg liker ogsaa aa se en god
film. Jeg bor paa Notodden der er det saann paasse greit aa bo,
men det kan bli veldig kjedelig i blandt. Notodden er kjent for
sin aarlige BLUSFESTIVAL da er det mange kjente artister her saann
som Jonny "Guitar" Watson. Jeg liker syntes lefse og geitost er
godt.
----------------------------------------------------------------HALLO!! Jeg er ei jente paa 19 aar, som heter Runa. Jeg gaar naa
siste aaret paa allmennfag,og det er ganske kjedelig. Paa fritiden
min har jeg ingen spesielle interesser, men jeg har en liten jobb
ved siden av skolen. Der arbeider jeg som bakeriassistent, det er
ganske aalreit. Jeg har ogsaa en hund som tar litt av tiden min.
Det er en Collie, og den er veldig fin. Ellers liker jeg og slappe
av hjemme, se paa tv, og vaere med venner.
----------------------------------------------------------------Jeg heter Tomas. Jeg er 18 aar og elev ved Notodden videregaaende
skole. Jeg gaar naa i tredje klasse, som er det siste aaret. Paa
fritiden gjoer jeg ikke saa forferdelig mye, men om vinteren staar
jeg paa telemarkski, som er min store lidenskap. Jeg liker ogsaa
aa "fikle" med min AMIGA, som er den beste maskinen paa markedet.

Notodden videregaaende skole, hvor jeg gaar paa allmennfaglig
linje VK 2. Noen av fagene som jeg har er norsk, engelsk, biologi
og samfunnskunnskap,og de er ganske vanskelige. P=E5 fritiden min
har jeg ingen spesielle interesser,men jeg pleier aa vaere med
vennene mine. Jeg har ogsaa en liten jobb ved siden av skolen. Da
arbeider jeg med mennesker som er psykisk utviklingshemmede.
