Zalezniak the unlikely hero!

--------------------------------------------------Newcastle,NSW- The Perth Cougars again showed a new found
resilience and a new found way to win as they overcame
deficits twice in the final quarter to defeat the
Newcastle Hunters 24-21.
The surprise hero for the Cougars was back up
Quarterback James Zelezniak who came in for the injured
Charlie Moore and proceeded to throw 6 completions from 6
attempts and two touchdowns. "It all happened so quick out
there. One second I am on the sideline the next I am in
the game and then it was all over. It was so quick" said
Zalezniak when celebrating the victory.
It was a great game of football although Laurie
Frier did not share that enthusiasm now that his side has
fallen to an 0-3 record. "It doesn't matter if you are
close. Sure we could have won all three game's but at the
end of the day we didn't. We need to be better".
Perth got on top early but failed to be effective
in the red zone and a 6-0 lead always looked vulnerable.
Eric Decker emphasized this at the beginning of the second
half when he took a shallow cross 92 yards to pay dirt and
out of nothing the Hunters had a 7-6 lead. This became 146 as Newcastle really took control of the match and Luke
Ogden would then twice hit his Fullback Peter Paea for
scores.
With Moore knocked out of the game with an arm
injury, it seemed the Cougars had no way back but
Zalezniak took his chance with both hands. He found his
Tight End Neccrom Woods deep over the middle to retake the
elad with just over 9 minutes tom play. But at this stage
both defences seemed tired and Newcastle responded with a
long drive and another score.
Zaleznak was unfazed and a final drive inside the
last 2 minutes saw him hit his targets 4 times, the final
one to his speedy running back Anthony Creighton exposed a
gap in teh overage and scored with 1m05 on the clock.
Newcastle were done. THere last drive went nowhere and it
was fitting that former Hunter Charlie MacGougan ended the
game with a sack on 4th down.
