SECTION A

1.

Details of a column inside a proposed new hospital are shown in Figure 1.

Determine suitable reinforcement (main steel and links) for this column at:
a)
b)

foundation to level 1
level 3 to level 4

The column is short and cannot be subjected to significant moments.

DESIGN DATA
Loadings:
Characteristics dead and imposed loads at each level are shown in
the Figure.
Reinforced concrete weighs 24kN/m3 allow for the self weight of the
column.

Materials:
Concrete: Grade C28/35

fcu = 35N/mm2

Reinforcement: main bars and links H500

(20 marks)

2.

Details of a cast-situ reinforced concrete floor in a new shopping centre are

shown in Figure 2.
Design the beam Mark B for:
a)
b)

bending
shear

a)

determine the moment of resistance of the concrete section and suitable

main steel at the critical section.

b)

determine the shear strength of the beam and design suitable links at the
critical section.

Deflection checks are not required.

DESIGN DATA.
Loadings :
Characteristic dead loads:

reinforced concrete weighs 24kN/m3

mass concrete (screed) weighs 23kN/m3

Characteristic imposed loads: BS6399: pt 2: table 1: D

shopping areas: 4.0kN/m2
Allow for lightweight partitions

Materials:
Concrete: Grade C32/40

fcu = 40N/mm2

Reinforcement: Main bars and links

H500

(40 Marks)

SECTION B

3.

The timber deck shown in Figure 3 spans between buildings in an outdoor

centre.
Design a typical beam Mark T, for:
a) bending.
b) shear.
c) deflection. check and comment on the result

DESIGN DATA
Loadings:
Dead loads: assume timber weighs 5.6kN/m3
Imposed loads: BS6399: pt 1: table 1: C3 corridors: 4.0kN/ m2
Materials:
Timber beam: grade C24 redwood.
(30 marks)

4.

A typical section through a proposed three storey bookstore is shown in

Figure 4.
Design the walls from foundation to level 1.
Choose suitable brick and mortar strengths for the load bearing skin.

DESIGN DATA
Loadings:
Characteristic dead loads: brickwork

= 20kN/m3

Characteristic imposed loads: stacked books

= 2.5kN/m3
perimeter of height

Do not allow for light weight partitions.

Do not reduce the imposed loads due to multi-storey construction

Materials:
Brickwork:
category of manufacturing control special.
category of construction control

special.
(30 marks)

SECTION C

5.

Details of a connection between beams in a steel framed building are shown

in Figure 5. The connection is pinned and will transmit vertical shear only.
Choose a suitable end plate for the beam Mark B.
Determine the site, number and layout of the bolts.
Design the welds.
Sketch the connection details.
Bearing checks on the bolts and plate are not required.

DESIGN DATA
Loadings:
Characteristic dead load

= 440kN

Characteristic imposed load

= 100kN

Materials:
Rolled sections and steel end plate grade S275.
The plate is sawn edged.
Bolts grade 8.8.
Welds electrode classification 35.
(20 marks)

6.

The steel beam shown in Figure 6 forms part of a new industrial complex.
Design the beam for:
a) bending
b) shear
c) deflection check and comment on the result.
For the deflection calculation, use the unfactored characteristic imposed loads
only.
The beam is fully laterally restrained by the steel plate floor.

DESIGN DATA
Loadings:
Steel plate floor
Characteristic dead load

= 20kN/m

Characteristic imposed load

= 10kN/m

Steel stanchion
Characteristic dead load

= 300kN

Characteristic imposed load

= 60kN

Materials
Steel UB section grade S275.
