Problem 1:
Considering the following frequency responses for causal and stable discrete-time LTI
systems. By utilizing the properties of first- and second-order systems discussed in
Section 6.6, determine whether or not the impulse response of each of the system is
oscillatory and also brief the reason. (Note: You should be able to answer this question
without taking the inverse Fourier transforms)

Solution:
1. The first and second first-order factors have a parameter of 1 = 0.6 and 2 = 0.8 ,
respectively. Therefore, neither factor contributes an oscillatory component to the
impulse response. So the impulse response of the overall system is non-oscillatory.
2. The first, second, and third first-order factors have a parameter of 1 = 0.6 ,

2 = 0.7 , and 3 = 0.8 , respectively. Therefore, the first and second factors both
contribute an oscillatory component to the impulse response. So the impulse response
of the overall system is oscillatory.
3. The first and second first-order factors have a parameter of 1 = 0.6 and 2 = 0.7 ,
respectively. Therefore, neither factor contributes an oscillatory component to the
impulse response. The first second-order factor has parameters r = 23 and cos = 1 .
Since = 0 , it does not contribute an oscillatory component to the impulse response
either. Therefore, the impulse response of the overall system is non-oscillatory.
4. The first and second first-order factors have a parameter of 1 = 0.6 and 2 = 0.7 ,
respectively. Therefore, neither factor contributes an oscillatory component to the

impulse response. The first second-order factor has parameters r1 = 34 and cos 1 = 1 .
Since 1 = 0 , it does not contribute an oscillatory component to the impulse response
either. The second second-order factor has parameters r2 = 53 and cos 2 = 1 . Since

2 = , it contributes an oscillatory component to the impulse response. So the impulse

response of the overall system is oscillatory.

Problem 2
Consider a continuous-time low-pass filter whose impulse response h(t ) is known to be
real and whose frequency response magnitude is given as H ( jw) = 5 .
1. Determine and sketch the real-valued impulse response h(t ) for this filter when the
corresponding group delay function is specified as: (6pt)
(i) ( ) = 4

(ii) ( ) = 3

(iii) ( ) =

2. Please repeat part 1 and 2 if h(t ) has not been specified to be real. (4pt)
Solution:
(Note: The solution below assumes the cutoff frequency of H ( jw) is wc = for
simplicity. You can also assume wc to be any finite value, in which case the solution
simply follows Homework problem 6.24. )
If ( ) = k1 , where k1 is a constant, then H ( j ) = k1 + k2 , where k 2 is another
constant.
1. If h(t ) is real, H ( j ) = k1 + k2 has to be an odd function, which means that k1
must be zero. Also, let us define H 0 ( j ) = H ( j ) = 5 . Then h0 (t ) = 5 (t ) .
(i) ( ) = 4 k1 = 4 H ( j ) = 4 H ( j ) = H ( j ) e jH ( j ) = 5e j 4
Therefore, h(t ) = h0 (t 4) = 5 (t 4)
jH ( j )
= 5e j 3
(ii) ( ) = 3 k1 = 3 H ( j ) = 3 H ( j ) = H ( j ) e

Therefore, h(t ) = h0 (t + 3) = 5 (t + 3)
jH ( j )

(iii) ( ) = 2 k1 = 2 H ( j ) = 2 H ( j ) = H ( j ) e

Therefore, h(t ) = h0 (t 2 ) = 5 (t 2 )

(Note: the sketches have been omitted here for simplicity but should be shown in your
answers).

2. If h(t ) is not specified to be real, then H ( j ) does not have to be an odd function.
Therefore, k 2 does not have to be zero. Given only H ( j ) and ( ) , k 2 cannot be
determined uniquely. Therefore, h(t ) cannot be determined uniquely.
