The main role of diversity in a group is that it fosters creativity, which further helps in

generation of various ideas and different possibilities to arrive at a single solution. Team
diversity is a desirable factor in the functioning of a team to an extent as it can bring diverse
ideas and opinions into the discussion and thus enhances the group functioning. But along
with diversity the important factors for the seamless functioning of a team are cooperation,
coordination, compatibility etc
Our group functioned in an efficient and amicable way by providing the members various
opportunities for learning, information exchange, socialization etc. The group was diverse on
the basis of knowledge, language, work experience, gender etc. The details of the
aforementioned topics and the impact it had on the functioning of our group is explained
below.
(i) Knowledge: Various members of the group had in-depth knowledge in domains like
Aerospace, IT, Electronics and commerce. This helped in generation of various ideas and
following a structured approach to reach towards a conclusion. For instance, during the case
discussion of 'Dogfight over Europe: Ryanair' one of the group members Nainesh, who is a
B.Tech in Aerospace engineering from IIT B gave us a deep insight regarding the
functioning and operation of R & D, Design and Development teams in an Airline industry
(ii) Language: Group was diverse linguistically with Hindi, Kannada, Gujarati, Tamil,
Bengali, and Marathi speaking members. Hindi was a common language used for
communication and information exchange. But there was a slight issue due to this as one of
the members Pramod; an Electronics engineer from Karnataka could not understand Hindi at
all.
(iii) Work Experience: Two of the members had 2 years, one of the members had 3 years of
work experience in IT sector and rest of the members had no prior work experience.
Members with work experience were very helpful in providing an insight regarding
operations and functioning of individual departments in various organisations. One of the
members of the group Ranjit, an IT Engineer with three years of work experience played a
key role in the case discussion of Barco Projection Systems. He provided us with the detailed
description of pricing strategies adopted by the marketing department in organisations and the
future implications of those strategies.
(iv) Gender: Group was composed of two female and five male members. It played an
important role in the functioning of the group. It helped in bringing out different perspectives
and ideas in the group but also a few restrictions in the group. The time and location of
meeting had to be decided according to the convenience of the female members. The female
members generally found it convenient to meet in the library and before 10 in the night.
To summarize the overall impact of diversity, it provided a good learning experience by
encouraging creativity, bringing different perspectives and exposing each of the members to a
wide range of knowledge.
