Thisadvancedlevelseminarwillsurveytheteachingsonprayerandspiritualdirection
bymajorfigureswithinthepatristicandearlyByzantineperiods(200A.D.650A.D.).
ThefirstweekwillexploreselectedthemeswithintheNewTestamentconcerningthe
natureandpracticeofprayer.Thesecond,thirdandfourthweekswillexaminepublic
teachingintheearlypatristicperiod(thirdandfourthcenturiesA.D.)concerningthe
practiceofprayer.Suchpublicteachingwasconductedprimarilythroughexpository
sermonsandtreatisesontheLordsPrayerandsecondarilythroughmystagogical
catachesis(i.e.theinstructionofpersonsseekingbaptismorrecentlybaptizedconcerning
thenatureofthesacraments,prayerandsacramentalworshipandtheproperconditions
forfaithfulreceptionofthesacraments).Theremainderofthecoursewillbedevotedtoa
closereadingofmajortextsonprivateprayerandspiritualdirectionbytheprincipal
asceticandmonasticwritersofthelatepatristicperiod(350A.D.650A.D.),giving
specialattentiontoEvagriusaccountoftheeightevilreasoningsandCassians
discussionoflectiodivina.
Thecourseisintendedtohelpstudentsarriveatamoredetailedandnuanced
understandingoftraditionsofprayerwithintheearlyandundividedChurch.The
discussionsofsin,temptationandspiritualguidancewillalsohelpstudentsgainaricher
andmoretheologicallydevelopedunderstandingofcertainaspectsoftraditionalpastoral
careandcounseling(cureofsouls).
II.LearningOutcomes
Atthecompletionofthiscourse,havingreflectedcriticallyupontheassignedreadings,
youshouldbeableto
1) understandandaccuratelydefinetechnicaltermsrelatingtothefollowingareasof
earlyChristianthoughtandpracticeintheGreekEast:
a) prayer(e.g.monologisticprayer,imagelessprayer,theprayeroffire);
b) repentance(e.g.penthos,katanuxis);
c) spiritualwarfare(e.g.phantasiai,akedia,antirrhesis,ekkopethelematos,
dikaioma);
d) communionwithGod(e.g.hesychia,apatheia,epektasis);

e) theorganizationofasceticandmonasticlife(e.g.cenobium,lavra,
idiorrhythmia).
2) understandandaccuratelyexplain
a) howpublicteachingonprayerwasprovidedintheearlyChurch(e.g.catechetical
andmystagogicalinstruction;theexpositionoftheLordsPrayerasamodel
prayer);
b) thedistinctionbetweentheactivelifeandthecontemplativelife(initsvarious
formsanddegreesofrelativeprogresstowardunionwithGod);
c) thevariousaccountsofthespiritualsensesandhowthesewerethoughttobe
relatedtocontemplativeprayerandtoknowingandexperiencingGod;
d) howspiritualdirectionwasprovidedintheearlyChristianasceticmovement
throughthepracticeofspiritualfatherhoodandtheconfession(manifestation)
ofthoughtstothespiritualfather;
e) Evagriusaccountofthepsychologyoftemptationandtheeightevilpatternsof
thoughtandhowthesewereadaptedanddevelopedbyJohnCassianandthe
principalearlyByzantineasceticwriters;
f) thedynamicsofrepentanceinasceticliterature(contrition,compunctionandthe
giftoftears);
g) theuseofopposingreasonings/statesincombatingtemptations,vicesand
intrusivethoughts;
h) thealternativeaccountofthenatureandoriginofevilprovidedbyEvagriusand
theOrigenistwingoftheasceticmovement;
i) theliteraryformsinwhichasceticteachingonprayerandspiritualwarfarewas
transmitted
i) thesentenceandthecenturyasliteraryformsinasceticliterature;
ii) thevariouscompilationsofthesayingsandpracticesoftheDesertFathersand
theprinciplesunderlyingandguidingthesecollections.

wishingtoreceivecreditforthecoursemaymissnomorethantheequivalentof

Beginninginthesecondweekofthecourse,thefirsthalfoftheclasswillnormallybe
alectureandthesecondhalfofeachclasswillbedevotedtoadiscussionoftheassigned
readings.Discussioncanenhancelearninginavarietyofwayse.g.classmembersmay
suggestdifferentinterpretationsofatext,describealternativewaysofapproaching
difficultissues,orpointoutinterestingquestionsthatneedtobeaddressed.
Classdiscussioncanonlyachievethesegoalswhenallmembersoftheclasshave
readandreflecteduponalltheassignedreadingsforthatweekandcantherefore
participateknowledgablyinthediscussion.Forthisreason,studentswillbeaskedtosign
areadingscompletionsheetattheconclusionofthediscussion.(Thestudentwhohas
completed100%oftheassignedreadingswillreceive100%forthatweek;thestudent
whohascompletedlessthan100%oftheassignedreadingswillreceive0%forthat
week.Notethatthispolicywillsignificantlyaffectyourfinalgradeifyoufailto

TheexamwillconsistoffifteentechnicaltermscentraltothestudyofGreekascetical
theologyandtraditionsofasceticalpracticeandwhichhaveappearedrepeatedlyinthe
readings.

Eachtermmustbeclearlyandconciselydefined,using15sentences(as
appropriatefortheterminquestion).

Whereaconceptorpracticehasbeenintroducedbyaparticularwriteror
movement,thisindividualormovementmustbeclearlyidentified.

Wheretheconceptorpracticehasbeeninterpretedindifferentways(eitherby
writersofthesameperiodor,duetotheevolutionoftheconceptovertime,by
writersofdifferenthistoricalperiods),thesedifferentunderstandingsmustbe
clearlyandconciselyexplained.
