Anorexia is a dangerous eating disorder which often starts in teenage years. In Britain 5% of girls
are anorexic and four out of ten teenage girls skip meals so that they can be slim like fashion models and
pop stars.
Lots of teens are critical of their bodies. Many people go on diets or do a lot of exercise to try to
change how they look. But sometimes they go too far.
Some people go on starvation diets and become anorexic. On the other hand, bulimics go on
eating large amounts of food quickly, usually when they are alone and then they make themselves vomit.
Many girls and women read fashion magazines and become unhappy about their appearance.
But it's not just girls - many boys and young men also look at the bodies of athletes and want to look like
them. They want to lose weight too and often don't eat enough because of it.
What exactly is anorexia?
It's a medical condition. People with anorexia try not to eat and they lose a lot of weight. They
often feel fat even when they are very thin. They use other ways of staying thin too, like taking laxative
tablets (which make you go to the toilet more often) or by doing too much exercise. Anorexia is serious.
Anorexics can become very weak and die.
Brittany and Kristy are two fourteen-year-old teens who ended up in hospital because they suffer
from eating disorders.

I had an obsession with food. I only talked about food nothing else. I was always reading
the labels of the products and counting the calories and fat grams in everything. My parents
never noticed my problem because I avoided having meals with my family or friends. I even
started wearing large clothes to hide my body and told my friends it was just my cool style.
