As per the first advanced estimates, the kharif foodgrain production for 2009-10 was 96.6 million tonnes, the second lowest since 1999-2000, after the low of 87.2 million tonnes in 2002-03. Compared to the
peak kharif production of 121 million tonnes in 2007-08, production in kharif 2009 was 20.1% lower. Principal commercial crops were also strongly hit – oilseeds production of 152.3 lakh tonnes was 26.5%, lower
than the peak of 207.1 lakh tonnes in 2007-08.
