Option 1: Android App Development

Guidelines
for
Android App Assignment & 4 page Report
Report Format:
1st Page:
Name of the Android Application & Detail description of the application along with the
category it belongs to (Monetizable/ Humanitarian)
The apps must be non-trivial, ideally incorporating multiple significant features of the
Android platform (e.g. geo-location, camera , data storage). The app is to be developed as
a native Android app (exceptions may be considered, but must be approved in advance by
the instructor).
Each app should satisfy one or more of the following categories:
monetizable (i.e. it could generate a profit)
humanitarian (i.e. it improves quality of life in some significant way - not just fun)
2nd Page: (Literature Survey)
For your app idea, research to see if the idea is already implemented by an app in the Android
Market and list the existing apps of same category. If it is an existing app, justify that your
idea either adds a significant feature, or is implemented in a way that is a significant
improvement over the existing app (e.g. higher quality, better usability).
3rd Page: (Vision & Scope)
For your app, express the vision and scope using the following template*.
* Vision and Scope template:
Your Name
App Name
I. Opportunity (business or humanitarian; what need will it meet, what is revenue potential)
II. Vision Statement
III. Major Features
IV. Assumptions and Dependencies
V. Operating Environment (what will be on Android device, what will be elsewhere)
VI. Competitive Analysis (who are competitors, how successful are they, how is your app
different)
4th Page:
For your app, create a one-page mini-poster that includes your name, email, a title, and key
features of your idea. Screen print of the main opening menu/screen of your app.
What do you have to hand in/mail on or before April 20th 2015
(Monday)?
Project Code and a screen print: Provide a single zipped file containing all

directories/files in your Android project. Therefore, all classes, source code,

resources, manifest file etc will be included. You should also include a screen
print of the main opening menu/screen of your app. Include your name in the
zipped file name e.g. Aarav.zip
Note: Code that does not include the following will not be evaluated
comment header block on each .java file;
Inline comments at the beginning of each method;
Appropriately indented tidy java code.
Assignment (10 marks component) will not be evaluated if submitted
after due date.

Option 2:
Assignment: Opportunity Space Identification
Readings
Six Rules for Effective Forecasting, by Paul Saffo, Harvard Business Review
The Assignment is to find fertile areas for mobile applications development. (Refer Six Rules for
Effective Forecasting, by Paul Saffo, Harvard Business Review
Your assignment is to identify one trend that you think will lead to an opportunity:

1. Find some evidence/data to show why you believe it is a trend that is significant and that it will
remain/become more significant in the next years.
2. Find an example of one or more current products or services in the space you identified to show
there is some evidence that a market (albeit perhaps emerging) exists. Remember, at this time you
are NOT coming up with ideas for new mobile applications, products, services, or ventures, but
rather just to locate a space which you think may become ripe for entrepreneurial opportunity
development in mobile.
You are doing forecasting. Forecasting is tricky and full of uncertainty by its very definition. It is easy to
look back and say "why didnt I see that coming?" (Ex: OLA App, OLX App) For some tips on
forecasting, read Six Rules for Effective Forecasting, by Paul Saffo, Harvard Business Review.
