Sulaiman and today Im going to talk about the characteristics of a good teacher.
Okay, before I went deeper through the topic, let us be brief on the meaning of a
good teacher. Okay, from the Macmillan Dictionary, the word Good means that you
are having good qualities or standard. In the meanwhile, a teacher is someone
whom his or her work is to teach other people. If we put both words altogether, you
will get the definition of good teacher which gives the meaning of a person with a
good qualities or standard who is teaching other people. But, the question that
arose is what are the good qualities that a teacher should have? There are three
main qualities that I wish to highlight in my speech which are passion, versatility
and humor.
First and foremost, a good teacher will surely be known for her or his good
teaching. Good teaching is as much about passion as it is about reason. Its about
not only motivating students to learn, but teaching them how to learn, and doing so
in a manner that is relevant, meaningful, and memorable. Its about caring for your
craft, having a passion for it, and conveying that passion to everyone, most
importantly to your students. A teacher without a passion will have no ultimate goal
in her teaching. Well, they might have one as to fulfill their job or to finish their own
syllabus, but they will never know or really understand the real meaning of a good
teaching. Let us put ourselves in a situation of the students if the teacher is
teaching us without their passion. He or she will just come to the class and teach us.
The content of the lesson is there but he doesnt really care whether each and every
student understand the lesson well. The students will then also feel bored to learn in
the class and thus might lead them to hate the subject that the teacher is teaching
for their entire time in learning it.
Next, besides a good teacher must also have his or her own versatility.
Versatility in this context does not only mean that a teacher must follow the worldly
trending fashion to make them to be accepted by the students and community but
a teacher must then also be versatile in his own way of teaching. This includes his
speech style, body gesture and the way he is delivering the lesson in the class. With
this value of versatility, a teacher then will be able to grab the students interest in
learning that particular subject. However, we should never forget that the way we
dress to school will also plays a great role to be loved by the students. A teacher will
always be a role model to the students especially in the primary level. They will
observe and then imitate the way their favorite teacher is dressing, so it is very
important for a good teacher to have a very neat and versatile yet covering the
aurah when going to school. We will surely want to avoid the compliment by the
honest nave students such as Eh teacher, isnt this the baju kurung that you wore
last 2 days? so, instead of having to face that kind of situation, why dont we
change it to Wow teacher, you are always very versatile and beautiful. We wish to
become like you one day.

Other than that, a good teaching is also about humor. This is very important.
Its about being self-deprecating and not taking yourself too seriously. Its often
about making spontaneous jokes, mostly at your own expense, so that the ice
breaks and students learn in a more relaxed atmosphere where you, like them, are
human with your own share of faults and shortcomings. A very serious situation in
the class will also create a very tensed state of the students. Thus, it is very
important to have at least one or two humors in every particular class as it does not
only prevent the students to become sleepy but also produce a very lively class and
the students will feel confident and happy to participate in every activity in the
class.
All in all, we should never stop in striving to be the best teacher not just to
our students but also the community because a good teacher is the main person to
contribute for the best nation and ummah.
