UNIT I
INTRODUCTION
1.1

The Background

1.2 The Purpose

1. To understand the definition of simple sentence.
2. To understand the Important terms and example of simple sentence.

UNIT II
EXPLANATION

2.1 Definition of simple sentence

English sentences could be categorized as follows: simple sentences, compound
sentences, compound complex sentences (mixed sentences).
A sentence which has one subject and one predicate is called simple sentence. A simple
sentence is always an independent clause. A simple sentence expresses a complete thought. A
simple sentence is often mistakenly defined according to its length, just as the term sentence
itself can can be mistakenly defined according to the completeness of the thought it conveys.
Simple sentences are thus believed to be short an uncomplicated, along the lines of The dog ate
its dinner, or she slept until noon.
A simple sentence, no matter how long, no matter how intellectually dense, has only one
dependent clause. While the sentence above illustrates the problem with defining a simple
sentence in terms of the thought contained within it, the sentence below illustrates the problem
with defining a simple sentence in terms of its length.
Simple sentences can have compound subjects and compound verbs, which make the
sentences appear to be more than simple. The following sentence, for instance, has a compound
subject.
2.2 Important Terms and Example of Simple sentence
To understand these forms, you must know the following important terms:
a. Subject
The part which names the person or thing we are speaking about is called subject. Subject
may also have an attribute
Exemple:

In this sentences, colleague is a subject, while my is an attribute
b. Predicate
The part which tells something about the subject is called predicate. Predicate my have
verb direct object, indirect object, complement, etc.
Exemple:
4

Example subject and predicate:
We attended the class
[subject we, predicate attended the class]
They are busy.
[subject they, predicate are busy]
She is innocent.
[subject she, predicate is innocent]
He finished his graduation.
[subject he, predicate finished his graduation]
c.Verb

complete sentence in it self
