---How We Hear : Summary

There are three main parts of the ear involved in the hearing process: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear.

The hearing process begins when sound waves enter the outer ear and travel through the ear canal to the ear drum,
causing it to vibrate. These vibrations travel through three tiny bones in the middle ear, called the ossicles. The
ossicles cause the sound to be amplified before it enters the inner ear. The inner ear contains a fluid-filled cochlea that
is lined with thousands of tiny hair cells. The fluid moves in waves along the entire length of the cochlea. As the fluid
moves, approximately 12,000 hair cells bend. The frequency and intensity of the sound is determined by which hair cells
bend. The action causes nerve impulses to travel up the auditory nerve to the brain for processing. These nerve
impulses are the "language" that the brain can understand and convert into meaningful sounds.

---How do we hear?

When something makes a noise, it sends vibrations, or sound waves, through the air.

The human eardrum is a stretched membrane, like the skin of a drum. When the sound waves hit your eardrum, it
vibrates and the brain interprets these vibrations as sound.

Actually, as most things having to do with the human body, it is a little more complicated than that.

After the vibrations hit your eardrum, a chain reaction is set off. Your eardrum, which is smaller and thinner than the
nail on your pinky finger, sends the vibrations to the three smallest bones in your body. First the hammer, then the
anvil, and finally, the stirrup. The stirrup passes those vibrations along a coiled tub in the inner ear called the cochlea.

Inside the cochlea there are thousands of hair-like nerve endings, cilia. When the Cochlea vibrates, the cilia move. Your
brain is sent these messages (translated from vibrations by the cilia) through the auditory nerve.

Your brain then translates all that and tells you what you are hearing. Neurologists don't yet fully understand how we
process raw sound data once it enters the cerebral cortex in the brain.

Did you know?

• Your ears aren't just good for helping you hear. They help you keep your balance as well. Near the top of the
cochlea are three loops called the semi-circular canals. These canals are full of fluid that moves when you move
your head. It pushes up against the cilia and sends messages to your brain that tells it how your body is moving.

You know that feeling of dizziness after you have been spinning around? Well, the fluid in you ears spun as well.
That makes the cilia move in all different directions and confused your brain.

• Children have more sensitive ears than adults. They can hear a larger variety of sounds.
• Dolphins have the best sense of hearing amongst all the animals. They are able to hear 14 times better than
humans.
• Too much fluid putting pressure on your eardrums causes earaches. They are often a result of infection,
allergies, or a virus.

---Sound waves are collected by the outer ear and channeled along the ear canal to the eardrum. The impact of sound
hitting the eardrum creates vibrations that cause three bones in the middle ear — the malleus, incus, and stapes
(hammer, anvil and stirrup) — to move. The smallest, the stapes, fits into the oval window between the middle and inner
ear. When the oval window vibrates, fluid in the inner ear transmits the vibrations into the hearing organ, called the
cochlea.

In the inner ear, thousands of microscopic hair cells are bent by the wavelike action of fluid inside the cochlea. The
bending of these hairs sets off nerve impulses that are then passed through the auditory nerve to the hearing center
of the brain. This center translates the impulses into sounds the brain can recognize.
Kahit Di Na Tayo Sanay mahal mo rin ako Into the sunset of your glory,
Dahil ikay nag silbing pagasa where my heart and future lies
Lumalalim na ang gabi At tanging ilaw saking mundo There's nothing like that feeling,
ngunit wala ka sa king tabi when i look into your eyes...
Pilit kong nilalabanan ang nakaraan Nang unang beses masilayan ko
Ngunit di manalo Ang iyong kagandahan [Bridge]

---The outer ear has no bones. It is the external portion of the ear, which
consists of the pinna, concha, and auditory meatus. It gathers sound
energy and focuses it on the eardrum (tympanic membrane). One
consequence of the configuration of the external ear is to selectively
boost the sound pressure 30- to 100-fold for frequencies around 3 kHz.
This amplification makes humans most sensitive to frequencies in this
range - and also explains why they are particularly prone to acoustical
injury and hearing loss near this frequency. Most human speech sounds are
also distributed in the bandwidth around 3 kHz.

---Pinna, or auricle

The visible part is called the pinna and functions to collect and focus sound
waves. It is composed of a thin plate of yellow elastic cartilage, covered
with integument, and connected to the surrounding parts by ligaments and
muscles; and to the commencement of the external acoustic meatus by
fibrous tissue. Many mammals can move the pinna (with the auriculares
muscles) in order to focus their hearing in a certain direction in much the
same way that they can turn their eyes. Most humans, unlike most other
mammals, do not have this ability.

Ear canal, or external auditory meatus

From the pinna the sound pressure waves move into the ear canal, a simple
tube running through the middle ear. This tube leads inward from the
bottom of the auricula and conducts the vibrations to the tympanic cavity
and amplifies frequencies in the range 3 kHz to 12 kHz.
