TECHNICAL STUDIES YEAR ONE - Semester 2 - 2015

Drafting and Fabrication

Teaching
The course has two principle components:
1. Through workshop activities, students are introduced to common construction
materials and fabrication processes and learn how the act of making forms an
integral part of the design process.
2. Technical drawing (drafting): students explore ways to describe constructed
objects - how to draw something so that it can be fabricated and assembled.

Project 2015 Water Tower

Work in pairs to design and build a 1m high structure with the capacity to carry a one
litre water bottle. The tower must be rigid and stable, i.e. must resist buckling,
bending, torsion and shear.
Assignments
Part 1 Workshop Study*
Students should make a photographic record of models, prototyping (testing), the
fabrication process and the final piece.
Part 2 Drafting Exercise
Students must produce a full set of measured drawings of their proposal. The drawings
must also be able to illustrate the individual elements or components and how these
come together using exploded axonometric or isometric projections.
Assessment
Part 1 (50%) - The workshop study is judged according to structural efficiency
(lightness), craftsmanship, construction detailing and the innovative use of materials.
Part 2 (50%) Drawings are assessed according to their informational qualities,
clarity, and graphic aptitudes.
This is an on-line submission. Each student group must present Parts 1 and 2 in a PDF
file labelled with their names.

Notes on workshop procedures

# Please observe all necessary Health and Safety measures when using the workshops.
Workshop facilities are only available to students who have completed the necessary
induction processes.
# All workshop staff (woodworking, metal-working and digital fabrication) will be
familiar with your project brief; however you should be clear about your general
material requirements and structural principles before approaching them for assistance
with appropriate fabrication techniques.
# Certain materials are available from the wood- and metal-working workshops, and it is
worth assessing these before finalising your design. The digital workshop charges for
materials, so please be sure to estimate your costs in advance.
