Basic structure parameters

VSBK option 1

VSBK is designed as a closed kiln structure owing to its vertical

firing system. The box shaped kiln structure owes its shape from
the insulation filling and retaining walls around the shaft.

Single shaft kiln suitable for small scale clamp owners and
community of brick workers. Less space at loading platform
suitable only for storing green bricks for night operations. Brick
work is done in mud mortar with cement pointing.

The height and cross-section of the shaft has been standardized to

an optimum output capacity. Marginal variations of the shaft height
(11 batches 13 batches) are considered depending on the green
brick and fired compressive strength. Nominal shaft dimensions are
1m x 2m with adjustable variations depending on the green brick
length and height. The shaft size cannot be made larger due to
operational problems. However the width of the kiln can be varied
to a certain degree according to the need and investment capacity
of the entrepreneurs.
The five options will highlight on different features of the kiln with
the same production capacity. The major trading takes place
between the storage capacity on the kiln platform and the cost of
the kiln structure.

11 batch height of shaft.

Platform of 13 by 12 on top without cantilever. Brick soling
on top.
Storing of only a few thousand bricks at the top.
MS staircase for manual lifting of green bricks to loading
platform.
Buttresses are redundant due to less width of the kiln.
Brick work above ground level in mud mortar with cement
pointing of mortar joints.
Four tie beams at an interval of 4 starting from arch base.

Cooling chamber

VSBK option 2
Economized design in terms of the width of the structure. Good
insulating material is needed for less heat loss from structure. A
hoist is essential for lifting up of green bricks and manpower at
periodic intervals.

Less space in the platform level with slab projection removed at the
top. Brick work is done in mud mortar. Cement pointing is a must
on the joints. Option of conveyer belt for lifting of green brick.

The fire is not always kept at the center of the shaft.

More than permissible green bricks are stored at the kiln
platform. (20,000 well dried green bricks for Option 3 and
zero bricks for Option 1 and 2).

VSBK option 4
Earthquake resistant structure with low maintenance cost. Ample
space for brick storage and movement at the top. The life span for
the structure is assumed to be 15 years. Option of conveyer belt
and MS staircase for green brick and worker movement.
