Instrumentation and Control Manual

Scope and Application

The Instrumentation and Control Manual has been written for convenient reference
by Company personnel engaged in technical work with instrumentation and control
systems. It is directed to entry-level personnel and non-instrument specialists as
well as experienced engineers.
This manual covers approximately ninety percent of the most commonly used
instruments, describing their applications and basic principles of operation. In addition, Sections 200, P&ID Development, and 1200, Relief Systems, describe areas in
which project engineers normally act in conjunction with an instrument engineer.
Other discussions related to specific applications or peripheral concerns of instrumentation and control may be found in the Fired Heater Manual (instruments for
fired heat), Tank Manual (instruments for tanks), Compressor Manual (instruments
for compressors), Driver Manual (instruments for drivers), General Machinery
Manual (vibration monitoring systems), Electrical Manual (area classification,
relays, etc.), and Pipeline Manual (SCADA systems for pipelines).

Organization
The colored tabs in the manual will help you find information quickly.

White tabs identify sections pertaining to the manual as a whole

Blue tabs are engineering guidelines

Gray tabs are used for specifications, data sheets, data sheet guides, and
related industry standards (API, ISA)

A red tab is included for local documents

Change bars, vertical black lines, have been used in the margins of the master specifications to indicate where information has been added, changed, or deleted in reference to the last edition of the manual.

Engineering Guidelines (Volume 1, Part 1, Sections 100 through 1700)

Engineering guidelines provide information on principles of operation, applications, and selection criteria for instruments and control systems, as well as other
subjects of interest to instrumentation and control engineers.
Refer to the first page of each engineering guideline for an abstract of that section
and a detailed Table of Contents.

Engineering Specifications, Drawings and Forms (Volume 1, Part 2)

This part of the manual contains (1) Company specifications in commented form
and (2) Company standard drawings and forms that pertain to the areas discussed in
the guidelines.
