We are going to check in the import assessment service if the right taxes were paid,
Dellosa said.
With so many entry points, smuggled vehicles are shipped to the country through the
ports in the South, and it likely that they were
sneaked into the Mindanao port and passed
through BOC in collusion with some Customs
officials.
Five officials assigned in Davao port were
relieved of their duties as part of the internal
probe on the release and transport of the
Toyota Prado vehicles from General Santos
to Manila.
These are deputy collector Aniceto Sanchez Jr., acting principal appraisers Quinciano
Pavadora Jr. and Jamalodin Macadindang, and
customs examiner Moctar Amer, and cargo
control officer Ansari Saransaman Pundug.
The BOC officials allegedly released
the vehicles without
the necessary clearances and/or lifting
of alert orders as
required, and immediately loaded them
into a container van
for North Harbor in
Manila, a clear violation of customs laws,
rules and regulations. (Raymund F.

the fire in Barangay
Roxas District.
Tadeo said those left

Resigning
Newly installed Cardinal Cotabato
Archbishop Orlando Quevedo is tendering his resignation to Pope Francis as
Archbishop of Cotabato this month. On
March 11, I will be 75. I will be writing my
letter of resignation to the Holy Father
(Pope Francis) as Archbishop of Cotabato, he said in an interview with News
TVs State of the Nation, Friday. To note,
75 is the retirement age for bishops. The
Code of Canon Law requires that Catholic
bishops must tender their resignation on
their 75th birth anniversary. (Leslie Ann
G. Aquino)
C.C.T. Program
Twenty-thousand additional Yolandastricken families will be included in the
governments Conditional Cash Transfer
(CCT) program this year, courtesy of a
Senate amendment in the 2014 national
budget which slashed P336 million from
the programs overhead in order to enroll
that many typhoon victims. The senator
who authored the amendment, Ralph
Recto, said as a result of the Senate action, an equivalent of 100,000 more individuals in Yolanda areas will be brought
under the coverage of the Pantawid
Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), CCTs
official name. (Mario Casayuran)
Kinder Catch-Up
To ensure that learnerssuch as
those who were displaced due to armed
conflict in Mindanao and those affected by
disasters particularly by super-typhoon
Yolanda last yearwould be able to
complete their kindergarten education,
the Department of Education (DepEd)
will implement the Kindergarten CatchUp Education Program (KCEP). Education Secretary Armin Luistro, through
DepEd Order No. 11 series of 2014
released the Policy Guidelines on the
Implementation of the Kindergarten
Catch-Up Education Program which
aims to provide kindergarten education
to learners who do not have access
to schools or those who live under difficult circumstances. (Ina HernandoMalipot)

In fact, he said, the US Consular Office has a user-friendly system and that
the "vast majority of visa applicants are

Saint Agnes
The Catholic Church celebrates today
the Feast of Saint Agnes (Santa Ines) of
Bohemia, a medieval Bohemian princess
venerated in many parts of the world as
a model of Christian virtue and religious
piety. Also known as Agnes of Prague,
she lived a life of prayer and poverty. She
devoted her time to charity work and
helped convert many to the faith as an
active member of the Franciscan Poor

O W, t h i s k i d i s
great!
That was my wife
Andeng excitedly
expressing her admiration for young
Filipino figure skater Michael Christian
Martinez the countrys sole representative in the recent international winter
Olympics held in Sochi.
Andeng had earlier searched out
Michaels name in the Internet. She
had been hearing much about him from
friends who have been gushing over his
exceptional brilliance on ice.
Michael recently returned home to a
rousing welcome after his historic 19th
place finish in a field of 20-plus finalists
in the medal round of the mens figure
skating event.
A friend had a more skeptical view
of Michael and of his rare feat. Well,
what is so great about this kid? was the
question he threw to a recent gathering
of coffee cronies.
His question got the rest of us
analyzing the significance of what the
17-year-old Filipino had achieved in an
international competition.
Here are some thoughts on what is
so great about this kid.
One, he was the youngest participant
in his event.
Two, he was fueled mostly by the
power of his dream.
Three, he comes from a country with
no winter and no snow.
In short, the path towards Michaels
dream was littered with major obstacles. His will and resolve were bigger
than all of them combined. He overcame
the odds, kept his eyes focused on his
dream, and moved one big, big step
closer to it.
My view was that most, if not every,
Filipino child has a big dream.

gentle breeze
as jobless were
aged 18 to 24. Such
mass unemployment of the youth
can only be solved
by structural reforms.
To be fair, several such reforms were already in
place, including Daycare Centers
(Early Years Act), the Universal Kindergarten Act and the Enhanced
Basic Education Act or the new K to
12 system.
Spending for basic and higher
education has risen. For 2014, the
Department of Education (DepEd)
will receive P309 billion 15 percent
more than its 2013 budget and the biggest it has received in its history so far.
Between 2012 and 2013, the budget for
State Universities and Colleges (SUCs)
increased by 44 percent from R25.8
billion to P32.77 billion.
Though short of global benchmarks,
the increased educational investment
helped bridge perennial resources
gaps. President Aquino recently turned
over the 66,813th classroom built under
his administration filling an inherited classroom backlog. Last year, more
textbooks and chairs were purchased,
as some 61,500 teachers were hired
the biggest number DepEd has taken
in for a single hiring cycle.
With the groundwork in place, focus
should turn to ensuring the relevance
of curriculums and raising the quality
of teaching especially, in Math and
the Sciences. Several key changes
have to be instituted. There is little time
to lose as ASEAN 2015 is already on its
way. A sense of urgency must prevail.

OS ANGELES, California,
United States (Reuters)
When Halle Berry and Denzel
Washington won the best-acting Oscar categories and Sidney Poitier
was honored with a lifetime achievement
award in 2002, the night was a watershed
for black actors in Hollywood.
Since then the debate about Hollywood diversity among the African
American community has continued
to ebb and flow, but one fact remains
constant: nearly all black actors are still
only being recognized by the Academy
Awards for playing specifically black
characters in film.
Four movies from 2013 have served
to animate that conversation during
Hollywood's awards season: "12 Years
A Slave," "Lee Daniels' The Butler,"
"Fruitvale Station" and "Mandela: Long
Walk to Freedom." Only the first, Steve
McQueen's historical drama, made it to
the Oscars.
This year, three black actors will be
vying for Oscars at the March 2 ceremony, and if "12 Years a Slave" wins best
picture, it will be the first film by a black
director to do so.
But as black films and actors are
being celebrated by Hollywood, there is
no clear indication that the industry has
turned the corner on increasing roles not
based on race.
That could be partly explained by the
underrepresentation of black talent in senior positions in film studios and among
the 6,000-plus members of the Academy
of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,
weeks.
In his testimony, Dr. Reggie said that his mother
observed that he as a young
boy accepted faith in God
easier than his brother
and sister did. Dr. Reggie
said, Growing up in the
country, I cant remember
a time when I didnt believe in God.
My faith was as real to me as the red
clay beneath my calloused bare feet,
and God was as gentle as the cotton
that blew from the fields. It rooted
and grew in every direction without
anyone tending to it. I knew God was
as ever-present as the century-old
oak trees that grew on our acreage.
His goodness, grace, and mercy were
as alive and abundant to me as the
doves, squirrels, and pine trees I saw
every day. God was everywhere. I
heard sounds of him in the lake when
I was fishing and saw him when I lay
on my back in the fields watching the
cumulus clouds drifting by on a sea
of blue sky. For me, getting close to
God wasnt about sitting silently in
church; it was about becoming quiet
in the presence of his creation and
listening for his still, small voice.
God was as visible and present as
the landscape, especially the foothills
of the Appalachian Mountains. The
outdoors had become my cathedral,
and from the land, God had abundantly blessed us with food, clothing,
and a home. The faith of Dr. Reggie
at age 4 years old was astounding!
Like the unwavering absolute faith
in a great God of other innocent and
wonderful children.

STUCK IN TRAFFIC ALONG EDSA Vehicular traffic appears to be at a standstill as workers from the Department of

the issue, while in Africa 19 percent
of respondents disagreed.
The issue is one of very personal
anguish for many Catholic couples,
who say they are being treated as
second-class believers, and has led
to acts of defiance.
The German diocese of Freiburg
im Breisgau last year said it was
authorizing re-married divorcees to
receive Holy Communion on a case
by case basis prompting a quick
rebuke from the Vatican.
The issue would affect millions
of Catholics around the world, with
around a quarter of Catholic marriages ending in divorce in the United
States alone.
Some theologians and clergymen
have called for changes to facilitate
the annulment of marriages in cases
in which it could be argued that the
wedding took place under social pressure or was not fully understood.
Re-marrying would then be allowed under Church rules and the
couple would be allowed to take Holy
Communion.
Another possibility could be the
Orthodox model, which allows some
divorcees to re-marry in church and
take Holy Communion but gives only a
blessing for the second marriage and
does not consider it a sacrament.

Senseless Killing
Senator Aqullino Pimentel III, chairman
of the Senate justice and human rights
committee, condemned yesterday the
senseless killing of Judge Reynerio
Estacio Jr. of the Zamboanga Regional
Trial Court (RTC) last Friday. Estacio
was shot several times reportedly by
two motorcycle-riding men in front of
his house in Narra Drive, Tugbungan
Village, as he was leaving for work
around 7:40 a.m. Pimentel, who is a
Mindanao resident, said that Judge
Estacio had built a solid reputation for
being straightforward as a jurist, and
of doing his duty as he saw fit. The
killers, according to Pimentel, should
therefore be identified, arrested, and
prosecuted soonest. Otherwise,
the killing would end up merely as a
cipher on the statistics of murders
and mayhem in Mindanao, he said.
Pimentel also urged the Supreme Court
to use some of its funds to extend
support to Mrs. Teresita Estacio, the
widow of the Judge, and his family.

DUBAI (AFP) Roger Federer
showed an enterprising new side to his
game as he beat Novak Djokovic for the
first time in 18 months and ended the top
seeds defence of the Dubai Open title.
The record 17-time Grand Slam title
winner beat the six-time major champion
3-6, 6-3, 6-2, turning the match around not
only with scintillating groundstroke hitting but with some bold approaches to
the net.
Djokovic looked the more likely winner when he got within a point of going a
break up in the fifth game of the second
set, but a couple of minutes later came a
short rain delay which halted his momentum.
After that Federers game rose to
much higher levels, and his increasing willingness to come forward, which
earned him 11 points from 17 net forays,
seemed to bear the stamp of his new
coach, Stefan Edberg.
There was a buzz out there tonight,
and I was able to enjoy myself with that
crowd, five-time Dubai champion Federer said on court.
For some reason I had a tough start
but the crowd kept pushing me on and
I played well. Its a quick court so I am
always trying to be aggressive. I wish I
could do Stefans volleys, but I work with
what I have.

the effort of Jerry Mae Pandac of the

Casido, for his part, showed his crisp jabstraight combination and tough defense

Collins Jersey
Sale to Charity
NEW YORK (AFP) The NBA said Friday it will donate all proceeds from the sale
of Brooklyn Nets jerseys that once belonged
to Jason Collins to two gay rights groups.
Collins became the first openly gay, active male athlete in one of the four major
North American professional team sports
Sunday, when he signed as a free agent with
his original team, the Nets.
His jersey has quickly risen to the number one spot on the top-selling jersey list at
NBAStore.com.
Collins chose to wear the number 98
in honor of Matthew Shepard, a college student who was murdered in 1998 in an antigay hate crime.
Collins met with Shepards parents and
brother in Denver after the Nets played the
Nuggets there on Thursday night.
The NBA said it would give the proceeds of the Collins jersey sales to exceed
$100,000 to the Gay, Lesbian and Straight
Education Network (GLSEN) and the Matthew Shepard Foundation.
In addition, the league will auction off
Collins autographed, game-worn jerseys to
benefit the same organizations.
Im thrilled to work with the league to
support two fantastic organizations, Collins said, praising their work on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.
Collins, 35, was a free agent when he announced at the end of last season that he is
gay. He remained unsigned until the Nets
inked him to a 10-day contract Sunday.
The team can sign him to a second, consecutive 10-day contract before deciding
if they want to keep him for the rest of the
season.

The LTS represents the countrys
largest industries and companies, which
contribute billions in tax payments. Currently, the BIR has more than 2,000 large
taxpayers.
The BIR also gave a special recognition to companies that contributed billions of pesos to the government, namely
the Bank of the Philippine Islands, Citra
Manila Tollways Corp., DMCI Project
Developers, Inc., Emperador Distillers,
Inc. and Holcim Philippines, Inc.
Also included in BIRs billionaires
club are Manila Water Co., Inc., Monde
Nissin Corp., PMFTC, Inc. Quezon
Power (Philippines) Ltd. Co. and Toyota
Motor Philippines Corp.
In 2013, BIR collections from 2,120
firms classified under the LTS reached
P755.23 billion, an increase of 15.98 percent year-on-year, which accounted for
62 percent of the BIRs total 2013 haul of
P1.217 trillion.
This year, the LTS has been assigned
a goal of P917 billion the bulk of the
bureaus entire P1.456-trillion target
for 2014.
BIR Commissioner Kim S. JacintoHenares said the Aquino administration
is targeting an 80 percent revenue share
this year.
In 2014, Landbanks earnings from
investments were more than 50 percent
of gross income. This was higher than
the normal 50-50 ratio from investments
and loans two of a banks major income sources.
(This year) were projecting our
income will come from loans, said
Pico. The banks gross loan portfolio
increased to P303.9 billion in 2013 from
P273.4 billion in 2012 while loans to priority sectors went up to P244.6 billion
from P205.3 billion.
The bank, the countrys fourth largest lender, is expanding loan portfolio

agriculture and their mandated sector
which is small farmers. Were also supporting government projects and the

OFW Contributions
To SSS Reach P2.8 B
State-run Social Security System
(SSS) has collected P2.8 billion in contributions from overseas Filipino workers
(OFW) from January to November last
year, with the total annual collection
from this sector expected to hit P3.1
billion for a 22 percent year-on-year
growth.
In terms of coverage, the number
of OFW-members surpassed 923,000
last year, bolstered by the agencys
sustained campaign to attract migrant
workers by highlighting the value of
SSS coverage, promoting reactivation of
SSS membership, and setting up foreign
representative offices (FROs).
Over 100,000 OFWs joined as new
SSS members in 2013 alone. To better
serve our expanding OFW membership,
we deployed more roving officers to assist SSS foreign representatives in the
Middle East, Europe and Asia, and we
reached out to Filipino communities
in 14 major locations overseas, Judy
Frances See, SSS senior vice-president
said.
Last year, SSS initiated exploratory
talks on proposed bilateral social security agreements (SSA) with China and
the USA; and pursued its SSA negotiations with Germany, Japan and South
Korea.
OFWs often fall outside of social
protection schemes in their place of
employment, a situation that may leave
them and their families vulnerable during times of sickness, maternity, disability, retirement and death contingencies that are all covered by our Social
Security program, See explained.
This is supplemented by the Flexifund Program, a mechanism for OFWs
to maximize returns on their investments and benefit from an additional
layer of social security protection,
she added.

stakeholders. Many articulated that policies and market rules can be improved
for consumer protection without going
through another round of strenuous
process of legislation just to amend the
EPIRA.
Others like the advocacy groups call
for total scrapping of the law, removal
of all vestiges of deregulation like the
Wholesale Electricity Spot Market
(WESM) or the performance-based
setting of rate (PBR) regulation, among
others. Theyre also hankering for a
return of the government into power
generation as well as the dismantling of
monopolies, including the need to split
the mega-franchise of the Manila Electric Company.
But looking at the governments
dismal record in not running Malaya last
November-December, the continuing
failure of the Power Sector Assets and
Liabilities Management Corporation
(PSALM) in liability management; and
even the energy leaderships endless
struggle (if lack of interest is not also
a factor) in just merely understanding
the complex nature of the industry
those appear not to be very comforting
propositions.
As it is, policy muddles have been
tough on business, but it is more difficult
for industry players to wade through a
future wherein the market rules and policies are uncertain and not cohesive.
Constant assault
The unpleasant truth is that: the
EPIRA had been on constant assault. It
started even before the privatization of
the National Power Corporation (NPC)
had kicked off; and when many of the
assets were already divested, calls
for the laws revisions were revived,
especially when some quarters raised
suspicions that some plants were practically disposed gratis et amore or on a
fire sale.
All of those exercises turned futile
though and even the oversight Joint Congressional Power Commission (JCPC)
had not mustered enough appetite and
conviction to look at those alleged abuses
needs.
Mr. Federico R. Lopez, chairman of
First Gen Corporation, indicated that
the law has enough levers to achieve its
well-meaning objectives of ensuring
electricity supply and bringing down electricity rates for the country. But he said
the key reforms must be implemented
satisfactorily meaning, they must be
done right, not just carried out for the
sake of accomplishing something.
Anyone who knows that law knows
(that EPIRA) has enough levers and
safeguards and it would just be up to
the regulators and policymakers to see
these levers and hopefully apply them
for the industrys long-term viability, Mr.
Lopez stressed.
He concurred that the recent chaos
on the Meralco rate increase ignited
temporary setback in the industry, yet the
ruckus should not have warranted these
fresh calls for EPIRA amendments. It
is very important to get to the bottom
of what happened I think at the end
of the day, its a matter also for people
learning what the levers are and what
the safeguards are to correct the situation and to avoid the repeat of a situation
like that, Mr. Lopez has noted.
The Lopez group is among the local
investors continually injecting capital in
the sector to help government ensure
the countrys long-term power supply. Its
investments are anchored within the context of policies set out under EPIRA.
The industrys voice
PIPPA, which has 28 members of
power generation companies, had been
among the key groups which lent a voice
to the dialogues on the proposed tweaks
to the EPIRA.
Amendment in EPIRA is currently
not warranted. We should focus on more
realistic objectives, like improvement
on current processes within the EPIRA
framework, the organization president
said. Even without revising the law, he
averred that it is not actually a dead end
for the industry and government when
it comes to improving rules and policies
that shall govern the sector.

he popularity of the
Internet may have
eclipsed print media
but there are some
things an actual
brochure can do better. Having
a tangible brochure adds to the
effectiveness of your sales and
marketing campaign. In fact, the
very cost of printing a brochure lends
credibility to a company. There are
situations like trade shows, store
promotions and other personal selling
opportunities, where a brochure is
essential.
Brochures, especially full-colored
ones, are very expensive and you
must be certain to get your moneys
worth. Here are some tips to make
your brochure worth the price:
Clarify the main purpose of the
brochure and its target market.
Although a brochure may serve
multiple purposes, it would be best
to design it with its most important
use in mind. With a clear view of your
objective and target market, decide
how much you can afford to budget
for the project. An elite target market
may need a higher quality paper. If
you wish to target the mass market,
then you may opt for higher volume of
brochures with lesser quality of paper,
which is generally the most expensive
component of brochure-making.
Have quality pictures and/or
illustrations ready. No matter how
skilled the graphic artist, there is no
way to make poor quality photographs
enticing. Worse is that many simply
try to pirate material from the
Internet. Besides the copyright
infringement issues, often the same
pictures are copied by everyone,
making your brochure look like cheap
reproductions. Also make sure that
the picture accurately shows the
products you are selling.
Choose suitable paper. Using
book paper may be less expensive but
ink tends to spread easily since the
material is more porous. This results
in poor image sharpness and there is
a tendency for the picture to become
darker. If you wish to make the image
of a higher quality, you should choose
glossy paper since it is less porous.
There are two kinds of glossy paper
widely used in offset printing (this
is the printing process normally
used for making a large volume of
material)coated paper and matte
paper. While coated paper is shinier,
matte paper is the usual choice for a
more sophisticated image. Note, too,
that glossy paper is around twice as
expensive as book paper. Another
factor to consider is the thickness
of the paper. Generally, there is no
problem (except for image issues) if
you will be printing on one side; but if
you want to do back-to-back printing,
the ink may pass through to the other
side if the paper is too thin.

WOMAN ABOUT
TOWN
My first favorite is Bohol because its close to my heart. My aunt and uncle have a place
there, which will be a resort soon. Our horses are there, too. The resort is called Tarsier Botanika, but we take the boat to the other beaches. It brings together fun in the sun with all the
things I lovelots of animals, botanical gardens, horses, and family!
Second is Amanpulo. I am a private kind of person and I have to admit, when I went there
for my show (Listed on Lifestyle Network), it was absolutely breathtaking. The water was so
clear and the sand was so white and soft. I would go running in the mornings and just think
about how amazingly blessed we are in the Philippines to have all these wondrous, gorgeous
places to see and experience.
Third is Coron, Palawan. I have to say, experiencing speed boat rides was pretty awesome
and exploring new beaches to sit and have a grilled picnic in added not only a view but a
whole new experience. Definitely a place for people seeking more adventure instead of just
lying on the beach. I love it!

ANVAYA COVE
After years of searching, there is
one area that seems most ideal Anvaya
Cove. Because I will remain active at
what I am doing for many, many, more
years, it is ideal for many reasons. It is
close to Manila via SCTEX, only a few
minutes from Subic, secure, quiet, hugs
Bataans pristine shoreline, and is protected by green mountains.
Developed by Ayala Land, Anvaya
Cove is an internationally recognized and
environmentally sustainable project that
hosts residential living spaces built within
the verdant, tranquil surroundings and the
gently rolling terrains of Morong, Bataan.
When planning the expansive
470-hectare land area, it was a priority to maximize the propertys best
featuresfrom its cobalt waters and
fine sand shore to the extensive greens
of Bataan, says Jose Juan Z. Jugo, head
of Ayala Land Premier.
Residents and visitors can enjoy Anvayas Golf and Sports Cluban 18-hole
all-weather championship golf course.
For non-golfers and visiting family members, there are extensive gym facilities,
game room, and sports courts. Nearby
is Anvaya Cove Beach and Nature Club
with multi-purpose function rooms;
recreational beach areas that feature a
Water Sports Pavilion; the Pawikan Bar
and Grille, a pool complex that boasts of
an infinity pool, lounge pool, and lap pool;
and nature camp trails.
I can see myself at Anvaya Cove writing,
painting, making jewelry, developing recipes
using Bataans excellent seafood, and receiving family and friends. I can dream, cant I?
FARM FAILURE
A high school classmate
bought a farm lot in Cavite,
which should only be an hours
drive from Manila. Being up in
the mountains, close to Tagaytay, the land around the small
cottage she built is fertile, ideal
for growing upland vegetables,
herbs, and flowers.
As she continued to live in
the city awaiting retirement,
she paid a family to stay in
the farm house for security
and maintenance. Naturally,
she shouldered the power and
water bills. The house help enjoyed free rent, water, and electricity. They and their children
enjoyed watching telenovelas
and noontime game shows as
much as they wanted.
My classmate finally wised
up when the cost of gas, Skyway and Expressway tolls
went up and her farmhouse
visits became less and less
frequent. She decided to stop

style that is beyond the latest or the hottest
or the most covetable. Hers is style not dependent on trends or whats new, but style
that emanates from timeless values, from
virtues unchanged by time. As a fashion
designer, she finds it not easy to understand why what works has to change just
because there is a new season, the idea
of coming up with a whole new collection
for the sake of newness, to be in step with
the changing of the seasons dictated by
commercial, often arbitrary forces. As a
designer, she responds to more meaningful inspirations, not to the call of market
forces, certainly not for the consumerist
philosophy of more, more, more.
It would be inappropriate to call Hindy
progressive. While her move to Sta. Elena
in Cabuyao, Laguna many years ago is
now a dream for many of us trapped in
confined spaces like condominiums, it is
to her a materialization of what she has
always held dear all her life, way before
eco-friendliness or nature awareness,
before all this back-to-nature movement
became trendy and sophisticated. In
school, I was always part of these nature
movements. You know, things like Give a

part of the World Wildlife Fund for so long.
But I really wont call myself an environmentalist, nothing formal like that. I just
live in the way that is best for me.
In Sta. Elena, Hindy has found a
home that is in tune with who she is,
though it also made it possible for her to
embrace her commitment to true health
and nature. This house really grounded
us, she says. But what it really did for
me is it kind of made me self-sustaining in
a way. Back in the city, if I wanted organic

find it. But here I sort of just grow it.
Of course, there is also Holy Carabao,
a business that is more like an advocacy that Hindy made out of her husband
Gippy Tantocos farm. Gippy is more
natural about these things. I mean he
doesnt study it or even think about it
very much, she says. He started the
farm because he wanted all these leafies
available for our use and then I turned
it into a business. Now, Holy Carabao
belongs to a biodynamic, organic farmers

The biggest Hollywood movies nowadays make use of digital artistry and proof
is in this years list of Oscar nominees.
Eight out of the nine best picture
nominees (12 Years a Slave, American

The Wolf of Wall Street) boast of using
Autodesk.
In the Best Visual Effects category, all
five film nominees Gravity, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man
3, The Lone Ranger and Star Trek Into
Darkness also used Autodesk.
Autodesk also played a huge role in
the creation of a number of other movies
nominated this year, including those with
Best Animated Feature nods like The
Croods, Despicable Me 2, Frozen,
and The Wind Rises; and Best Animated
Short Film nominees like Get a Horse,
Mr. Hublot, and Room on a Broom.
This year has been especially gratifying. Not only is it the 19th consecutive year
Autodesk software has enabled Academy
nominated filmmakers to push the boundaries of what is possible by enabling them
to tell stories that just would not be possible practically, explains Chris Bradshaw,
Autodesk senior vice president.
But Autodesk staff were also recognized by the Academy for two of the
technologies they developed, and were instrumental in helping Mark Gill bring The
Voorman Problem, to the big screen. We
are delighted to be such an integral part of
innovative filmmaking, Bradshaw adds.
Every year, the Academy hosts a special awards ceremony two weeks before
the Oscars to recognize the discoveries
and innovations that have contributed in
significant, outstanding and lasting ways
to motion pictures.
The Academy honored Autodesk
Mudbox, a 3D sculpting software, with an
Academy Certificate for its powerful new
design capabilities and its contribution to
multi-resolution digital sculpting.
Additionally, the Academy
awarded FiLMBOX, the foundation of Autodesk MotionBuilder, with an Academy

Autodesk scientists, designers and
technologies have been
similarly recognized five
times in past Scientific

f theres anything that can be said about American best-selling author Mitchell David
Mitch Albom by the students and teachers of Xavier School which he visited, by
the thousands of avid Filipino readers who trooped to his jampacked book-signing
events, and by the journalists who were able to interview him, its that he is a very
inspiring man who is indeed larger than life.
For someone with a string of well-loved books such as Tuesdays with Morrie, The Five People
You Meet in Heaven, For One More Day, The Timekeeper, Have a Little Faith, as well as
critically acclaimed screenplays, and excellent sports articles, TV and radio commentaries, one
would be pleasantly surprised to find a simple, down-to-earth and generous person underneath
the successful, sought-after celebrity author that he has become.
National Book Store has been inviting Albom to come to the Philippines since his first book
Tuesdays with Morrie, a memoir about his college teacher, became a phenomenal success 17
years ago. The long-standing invitation has been renewed with the release of his latest best-seller
The First Phone Call from Heaven. But Albom was looking for a deeper purpose to come here.
And that he soon found.
Even coming here (in the Philippines), I didnt like to do anything unless theres some
kind of charitable element balanced into it. So the reason I came this time was because of what
happened with the typhoon and I asked the National Book Store people if they can tie in some
kind of activity where I can be of some use. If Im well-known, then use my being well-known
to help raise money. Then, Ill come, said the 55-year-old award-winning author, journalist,
playwright, and musician from Detroit, Michigan.
And so together with his wife Janine, Albom and National Book Store set out on a relief
mission to Tacloban in Leyte, after his book signing events last Feb. 22 and 23 in Makati and
Cebu. Apart from donating 40 fishing boats to help fishermen affected by super-typhoon Yolanda
with their livelihood, he also gave his books to the children and teachers in Pawing Elementary
School. Albom also visited the mass graves where hundreds of bodies are buried, including
many children.
Moved by the resilience and warmth of the people in Tacloban who showed him how much
they valued reading and his books, Albom decided to establish the Donated Reading for Youth
of the Philippines (DRY PHILIPPINES) program which will raise $160,000 to reconstruct 10
school libraries and stock them with books. He would make a $10,000 personal donation to get
STUDENTS AND CAMPUSES
BULLETIN (SCB): We learned that
one of the first things you did when
you got here in the Philippines is to
talk to students at Xavier School.
How was that experience?
MITCHELL DAVID MITCH
ALBOM (MDA): I was interviewed
on the stage, I hadnt really given a talk.
I just sat there in front of a teacher and
answered all his questions, and I also
took questions from the kids. It was
very, very inspiring. A lot of kids were
standing there with no seats. Some
were standing in the back. It was great.
The last thing I ever expected is to go
to a school in the Philippines and to
get all this attention. It was like being
Mick Jagger. I was being mobbed by
kids saying Picture! Picture!
SCB: Do you often give talks in
schools?
MDA: I do it a lot in the States. I go to
a lot of schools and universities. Like
here in the Philippines, Tuesdays
with Morrie, The Five People You
Meet in Heaven and my other books
are taught in schools. I guess because
theyre short and clean (laughs). Not
many books fit that description.
SCB: But are there many students
interested in these things, especially
now that theyre into gadgets and all
that superficial stuff?
MDA: Well, thats what you think.
But then you get these emails from
Im 11 years old and I love your
books, Im 14 years old and your
book really helped me, Im 16 years
old and I studied your books many
times because I want to know more
about relationships or time. I think
kids in their nature will surprise you
especially if youre an adult and Ive
been surprised at how deep a lot of kids
actually are considering that the whole
world seems to be just on gadgets.
Its true theyre writing me on
their gadgets. Theyre not sending
me letters anymore. I used to get a
lot of letters from kids. I used to get
scribbled butterflies. Now you get a lot
of emails and posts and pictures but I
guess its still true that no matter how
much technology advances, people
still love stories. Stories go back to
when we were in caves, talking to one
another. If they were popular then
and they served their purpose 100
years ago, 50 years ago, and 25 years
ago, then why do we think that all of a
sudden this generation would just go
ON MORRIE: I wish I
would get a call from
him. And I hope he
would say, Thank
you for continuing to
do what I love to do
which is to teach.
it started and is partnering with The National Book Store Foundation which will match funds
raised by Albom on a dollar-for-dollar basis until the goal is met.
Albom also pledged hundreds of copies of his books for the libraries as well as those from his
author-friends who were more than happy to share 10 of their signed books with their Filipino
readers in the typhoon-ravaged province. Among them are popular writers Jeff Kinney, Suzanne
Collins, Stephen King, Nicholas Sparks, Amy Tan, John Grisham, JK Rowling, John Green,
Lemony Snicket, Khaled Hosseini, Scott Turow, James Patterson, Sophie Kinsella, Michael
Chabon, Maggie Stiefvater, Dave Barry, James McBride, Harlan Coben, and Billy Collins.
They were all quick to say yes. I think we as authors always appreciate the effort people
make to read and cherish their books. That is so true of readers here in the Philippines, Ive
seen my own books pulled from the flood-damaged homes, moldy, discolored, yet brought to me
to sign. Its incredible and heartwarming, he said.
Since his Sociology professor Morrie Schwartz talked to him about living life the way it should
be, Albom has made a life-changing career transformation, and redirected his goals and priorities.
He slowed down in his fast-paced, deadline-dictated life as a sportswriter, and got more involved
in his family and in helping people in his community in Detroit. Today, much of his time is devoted
to his eight charities, including an orphanage that he and his wife operate in Haiti.
For the DRY PHILIPPINES program, Albom will coordinate it through his A Hole In The
Roof Foundation which is involved in rebuilding houses for the homeless after disasters.
Dont get me wrong, I have an ego like everybody else and Im very happy to sell books and
all that but there has to be more than that, he said. Morrie said, You got to do more. You need
to spread this blessing around a little bit. You cant just take that voice and keep talking about
yourself all the time.
For many people, Mitch Albom may be their literary idol who inspires them to become better
persons. But for the children of Tacloban and Haiti and other people he has been helping through
his charities, he is their beacon of hope, and the driving force that pushes them to move on amid
lifes struggles.
In this once-in-a-lifetime, Thursday interview with one of the worlds most read authors, we
learn about the inside stories behind his best-selling novels and television movies; those little
pieces of him in the characters that he created; and the realizations he had while finding meaning
in his life. (Rachel C. Barawid)
ON WRITING A

difficult. Its like

TOUCHING LIVES Through his books, it is undeniable that Mitch Albom has inspired many people. Clockwise from top left shows the author embracing

Take A Proactive
Stance On Job
Hunting
By Donald Lim
You are 31 years old, not 51. You have a good education and you are a career
professional passer. You had a job and you were even promoted. I do not see any
reason why you cannot get a job or have a hard time finding one. The question is,
are you looking hard enough?
On the other hand, I do not understand the entire context of your career and your
career line. I have no issues with changing careersI assume that in the span of 10
years, you moved companies three times, which is normal in this day and agebut
the bigger question is, why did you move?
When you moved from being a store supervisor to government, and then to
a construction company, did you move because you had a better offer? From my
understanding, you were already a store supervisor. Why would you move to a HR
assistant role? Was it because you felt that the finance path is not for you and you
would like to pursue the HR path? Also, from your HR assistant role, why did you
move to an administrative assistant role? I presume you wanted to move out of
government service and back to the private sector.
My advice is that you put your 10 years of working behind you, but do learn from
the experiences and challenges that you have gone through the past decade. Use all
of those to forge ahead. I hope that by now, you would have known already what you
want to do in life and what specific career path you feel you would excel in.
If you think no one is responding to your resumes, I would recommend that you go
for quality and quantity. Target first the companies which you think would appreciate
your contributions. You have a good mix of working in both private sector and the
government, which means you have a unique perspective. At the same time, you
also have experience in audit and HRtwo different disciplines that will allow you
to contribute in work discussions.
At the same time, print 50 copies of your resume, identify 50 companies here in the
Classifieds section, and send these out. You never know where chance will bring you. I
remember the time when I graduated from college. I had 100 printouts of my resume,
and I sent these out to a hundred companies. While I was also active in going to job
fairs, it was this attack everywhere strategy that landed me my job interview and, eventually,
my first job at Burger King, where I started out as an assistant restaurant manager.
I hope the year brings you a new beginning and a fresh start. Be optimistic but also recognize
that you have to be proactive to land the job you want. While you are still young, show them what
your experience and youth can bring to the corporate table. Good luck.

found itself charting wider territories as it ventured not just
in vertical but horizontal developments as well. All braced
up to overcome challenges and break personal records,
