AutoCAD 2013 User Manual CAD Lab 7

7.0 Introduction
CAD Lab 7 is on three-dimensional (3D) drawing and covers the following:

section and slice of 3D solids, and

hatching.

7.1 Section
Command line: section

Shortcut: sec

This command requires specification of a section plane on a 3D solid, the intersection of

which results in a sectioned region. Note that the section command only creates a 2D
sectioned region and does not remove the sectioned portion. The following steps outline the
procedure for using the section command:

Start the section command.

Select the object(s) to section and then press enter.

Specify first point on section plane by [Object/Zaxis/View/XY/YZ/ZX/3points].

Object
The objects that can be selected are circle, ellipse, arc, 2D spline, and 2D
polylines. The object should be made from the same view from which the section
plane will be looked at. As an example, if the section plane is to be viewed from
the front, the polyline should also be made on the front view. However, when
using the section command, the view should always be changed to top. In the
example given below, the given polyline is used for sectioning.

ZAxis
Requires the specification of a point on the section plane and another point on the
z-axis, that is, perpendicular to the section plane.

View
Aligns the section plane with the viewing plane of the viewport with the
specification of a point on the section plane.

XY

Aligns the section plane with the XY plane of the UCS by specifying a point along
the section plane.

Aligns the section plane with the YZ plane of the UCS by specifying a point along
the section plane.

Aligns the section plane with the ZX plane of the UCS by specifying a point along
the section plane.

3 Points
Requires specifying 3 points that define the sectioning plane.

7.2 Slice
Menu: Modify | 3D Operations | Slice
Command line: slice

Shortcut: sl

This command slices a solid. The following steps outline the procedure for using the slice
command:

Start the slice command.

Select the object(s) to slice and then press enter.

Specify start point of slicing plane or [planar Object/Surface/Zaxis/View/

XY/YZ/ZX/3points].

The planar object, z axis, view, XY, YZ, ZX and 3 points methods are same as for the
section command. However, the surface option requires specification of a surface
which is used as a cutting plane. A surface can simply be formed by extruding a
polyline. The slicing can then be performed.

After the 3D solid has been sliced using the options above, select the solid that should
be kept or keep both solids.

7.3 Hatch
Menu: Draw | Hatch
Toolbar (Modeling):
Command line: hatch

Shortcut: bhatch, h, bh

Hatch fills a selected area or selected objects with a hatch pattern, solid fill, or gradient fill.

Start the hatch command. This will display the Hatch and Gradient dialog box. The
important options are highlighted.

Note that when hatching in 3D, the viewing plane (xy-plane) should be parallel to the
hatching plane and the UCS origin should be moved to the hatching plane.
