TASK 2

A right decision made by a leader is important as it will determine the successful of a company.
One of the leader that I choose as an exemplary leader in construction sector is Ar Tan Pei Ing.
She was born on 3 March 1960 and raise in Kajang, Selangor. She is an eldest among five
siblings. She is got her Bachelor of Architect (Hons) in Melbourne University on 1984. She is a
registered architect in the Malaysian Institute of Architect (PAM). She is the most successful
female archit4ecture who can achieve the higher position right now and she is currently a
principals of P I Architect and elected as president of Architects Regional Council of Asia
(ARCASIA) for 2013-2014. She is also a former president of Malaysian Institute of Architect
(PAM) which is the first female head of PAM. She has handled project such as IOI Mall, IOI
Business Park and Marriott Hotel Putrajaya which lead her won 2004 FIABCI Award under hotel
category. The Minister of Works has appointed her as a member of the board of Architect since
2001. She is the co-author of PAM 2006 Form of Building Contract (With and Without Quantity,
and Nominated Sub-contract) and the Handbook for the PAM Form of Contract. She and the
three co-authors have also completed the PAM Form of Contract for Minor works.
This show that she is a responsible and a capable person to carry a big responsibilities. I
choose Ar Tan Pei Ing because it is rare to see woman can successful in male dominated world
of construction sector of work. Although it is a toughest course, she never give up, give her best
and enjoy her study. She success gain the client trustworthy and make the client confident of
her work. She is a professionalism, trustworthiness and an integrity person. As a leader, she
shows her skills and knowledge to her work and thus produce many successful project. She
used to be bully by the contractor because she is a woman but she never give up and show that
she can do what she want to do. Her spirit makes me moved and make me believe that I also
can become a successful person like her in the future. She said do not underestimate the power
of passion and belief because without them, nothing happens.

Base on the articles that has been gathered about Ar Tan Pei Ing, she has use trait theory for
her effectiveness of leadership. Trait theories is the theory that a leader possess personality,
physical, social or intellectual traits to differentiate a leaders from non-leaders. The trait theory
of leadership focuses on identifying different personality traits and characteristics that are linked
to successful leadership across a variety of situations (Kendra, 2014). According to Thomas
Carlyle, history is shaped and made by extraordinary leaders. Trait theory said that an effective
leaders shares common personality characteristic such as integrity, good decision making skills,
desire to lead, self-confidence, intelligence and so on but the traits is not guarantee success as
a leader.
Ar Tan Pei Ing has a trait of integrity and professionalism. As a professional service in
the industry, it is not give the service to the client, but also to the committee. Because when
architect create a building, the public is using that building. She feels that architecture for
humidity and community. It is because sometimes architect is not just fulfill the clients
requirements, but also extending it a little bit and thus architect should spend time to do work for
those who cannot afford architect services. She is also has a desire to lead. This is show when
she established her own firm which is P I Architect when she was only 29 years old after feel
tired of working for other people. She also become first female to become a president of PAM
and ARCASIA for 2013-2014. Besides, she also have an ambition. She interest in architecture
as she saw Malaysian built environment massive change. This has led her to decide that she
wanted to contribute in the Malaysia development by studying a Bachelor of Architecture at the
University of Melbourne and returning to Malaysia to work as an architect.
Ar Tan Pei Ing is a great and professional person. She has a lot of responsibilities and
yet enjoying what she have and what she done. She shows that become a successful person
and leader is not easy to achieve. This make me feel want to become a successful person like
her. As I graduate and get my Bachelor of Quantity Surveyor (Hons), I want to work at the
consultant firm and contractors company to gain and learn new knowledge. I want to know
several professional person in construction industry and learn from them. I want to make more
experiences as I want to establish my own Quantity Surveyors firm and get the Sr title. I also
want to involve in a big project as I want to familiar with the problem solve and situation in the
site. This can be achieve if I start to study hard and smart in the university. The basic knowledge
can be learn from a lecturer in university while the experience in working will let you know a new
knowledge.
