The Great Gatsby character analysis

Gatsbys death appears to be something so confusing at first. It seems that George Wilson
interrogated Tom inside his home demanding for the truth. Tom told George that Gatsby had
killed Myrtle like a coward. George proceeded to find Gatsby and kill him with the revolver that
he had. The interesting detail in the last chapter is that out of the hundreds of people who would
attend Gatsbys parties, only three people actually went to his funeral. All of these characters
were so superficial. It makes it seem that Gatsbys efforts to one day win daisys heart were all in
vain. Buying a house across the dock from Daisy, making large parties; all of this was in vain.
Daisy is just like Tom; she is a shallow, egotistical person while Tom is a cruel, careless man.
Nick says, I couldnt forgive him or like him but I saw that what he had done was, to him,
entirely justified. It was all very careless and confused. They were careless people, Tom and
Daisythey smashed up things and creatures (187). Nick expresses many emotions in what he
feels about Tom and Daisy. At the night of the incident, Daisy was the person driving the
vehicle, but Gatsby said it was himself. He wanted to protect Daisy from any harm.
Nevertheless, Daisy did and said nothing when George seeked revenge. She let him kill Gatsby
calmly and carelessly. On the other hand, Tom is simply a fool; it is a point to laugh at how he
with such certainty said Gatsby had killed Myrtle when in reality it was his wife. It is very ironic
how his wife killed Myrtle, Toms mistress. A question that arises is whether Gatsby actually
loved Daisy. It is clear that sacrificing his life was a way to show that he didnt have an
obsession for Daisy, but rather an emotional bond known as love.
Gatsbys love for Daisy came from his youth, but it wasnt simply Gatsby trying to
recapture the past. Gatsby used the love he had for Daisy as an inspiration to succeed and grow.
Gatsbys money did not come from his parents; it came from hard work and personal effort. He

did all that he did so that Daisy could have no reason to not accept him. It is like if Daisy herself
was the green light that Gatsby admired. She brought him hope for a better future. Nick on the
last page says, Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes
before us. It eluded us then, but thats no mattertomorrow we will run faster stretch out our
arms farther. And one fine morning (189). Nick explains how the green light forces one to
be inspired and go beyond what appears to be ones limits. As to Gatsby, that green light was
Daisy; it was love. This love gave him hope and motivation. It got him up from his days when he
was low, and it mad his high days even higher. Through the love he had for Daisy he lived as the
man he was. He was a considerate, educated man. Most importantly, Gatsby was not oblivious to
small things; he has compassion for others which many of the people in his social status could
only dream of having.
