Engineering Construction
4.1 Selecting Location for the BTS3012A
When selecting a location, the first thing to come is to guarantee that the station has a
good coverage effect, then to guarantee that the station can function stably in long terms.
Though BTS3012A can work outdoors under all weather, in order to prolong its working
life, the BTS should be kept in a good operation environment.
1)

2)

3)

4)

5)

6)
7)

The operator should select the location within the permission of the network
planning, and should be responsible for negotiating with the owner on the selected
location to get the site construction and use right. Usually, the location is selected
near to the covering target. Open place like village, town and roadside, is easier to
rent and it also can meet the mounting-height requirement of the coverage.
The BTS should be located in a place where the traffic is convenient, the commercial
power is easy to import, the environment is safe and fertile land should be less
occupied. The location should be far away from high power radio launcher, radar
station or other interference sources, and the interference field strength should not
surpass the equipment the shielding indices toward the unwanted radiation.
The BTS must be in good connection with the transmission link of the Base Station
Controller (BSC). When installing the wire tower, microwave transmission can be
adopted, but the tower must be high enough to see each other with the opposite
end.
The installation position of the BTS must be flat (the flat area should be no less than
5*5 m) and have certain bearing capacity to bear concrete groundwork construction.
It cant be located at low-lying, humid and water-leaking place and its also not
suitable if the position is located at a place where landslide is easy to happen, rocks
lies underground or the ground is uneven.
The BTS should not be located at the environment where the temperature is high,
the air contains poisonous gas or is full of dust, or nearby the tindery and easyexploded goods or the air pressure is low. The BTS should also be far away from the
place where shocking shakes or deafening noises often take place. Nearness to
transformer substation should be avoided, too.
The BTS adopts 220VAC power supply. Though a big range of the voltage variation
is permitted, its also better to select a place where the power supply is stable.
As to the BTS planning to install on the building, considering there may be some
difficulties in transporting, hoisting, installing the BTS, and the bearing capacity of
the building, we recommend to rent the equipment room in the selected building and
choose Huawei BTS312 indoor BTS for the construction.

4.2 Preparation for BTS3012A Engineering Construction

4.2.1 Preparation for Groundwork of BTS Installation Position
When installing BTS3012A outdoors, a concrete pedestal on the ground is necessary for
the installation of the TBS3012A cabinet and storage battery cabinet. Its recommended
that the area of the concrete pedestal be 3200mm*2000mm. See figure below:

Figure 1.1 Schematic drawing of BTS3012A outdoor installation

Figure 1.2 Schematic drawing of BTS3012A cement pedestal

Explanations towards the construction sequence of the concrete pedestal:
1)
2)

Digging the footing groove: select a firm groundwork and dig the footing groove at
5m*4m*0.4m(L*W*H)
Leveling and tamping: fill the bottom of the groove with gravel, then level and tamp it.

Preparation Guide to GSM BTS3012A Installation

3)

Concrete casting: cast the pedestal after prepared and fully mixed the concrete
according to the mixing percentage. The surface of the pedestal should be even and
smooth. If the soil of the groundwork isnt good enough, a 14@200 bi-directional
steel bar should be added to the bottom of the pedestal.

Pedestal maintenance: the upper construction on the pedestal should be carried out
after 28 days maintenance towards the pedestal. If the engineering is urgent, highearly reagent can be used to shorten the maintenance period.
In order to prevent sluicing around the pedestal, barrel-drains should be dug around
the pedestal after it was cast.

4.2.2 Preparation for Grounding & Lightning Arresting System

The ground system of the BTS3012A BTS is very important. In order to guarantee the
equipment runs safely, the basic grounding facilities must be laid out before the
installation begins to guarantee smooth engineering. Because the BTS3012A adopts
outdoor installation, usually a concrete pedestal should be cast on the ground. If the soil
is loose, wet or the ground resistance rate is low, its recommended to lay the grounding
grid under the concrete pedestal. If the inside of the pedestal adopts steel bar, the
grounding should be soldered with the steel bar. If the pedestal is located at a place
where the soil electric conductibility isnt good or where the place is a rocky area and
lacks soil, its recommended to lay the grounding near to or far away from the concrete
pedestal, where it can meet the ground resistance requirement. Then conduct the grid to
the ground near to the BTS through galvanized flat steel (not less than 40mm*4mm).
Specific laying of the ground grid:
1)

2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)

According to the mobile BTS lightning-proof and grounding regulation of the Ministry
of Information Industry, the ground system should adopt grid-like shape in priority.
The grid shouldnt be smaller than 3m*3m.The vertical grounding bodies are set at
the junctions of the grid. The horizontal connectors (horizontal grounding bodies) of
the grid are soldered to the vertical grounding bodies. The soldering length is twice
of the overlapping length and the soldering point is at 200mm from the top of the
vertical grounding body.
The burying depth of the grounding body shouldnt be less than 800mm (the length
from the top of the vertical grounding body to the ground); The distance between
grounding bodies shouldnt be shorter than 1.5 times the length of the body itself.
Symmetrically soldering and educing two grounding lead-in cables from the
grounding grid. The length of the cables should be no longer than 30m and the
distance between the two soldering points shouldnt be shorter than 5m.
Each soldering point should be anti-corrosion processed.
The ground resistance should be less than 5 ohm and the test method should meet
the requirements of YD2011-93 Appendix B. In order to reduce the ground
resistance, chemical resistivity reduction mixture is recommended, but not salt.
The ground system can also employ other shapes because of the restrictions of
other conditions like topography etc. But measurements must be adopted to equalize
the voltage in the place where human and animal activities are very common.
Requirements to the grounding materials:

Vertical grounding body: 50mm hot galvanized steel pipe, length: 2000mm or
50*50*5mm hot galvanized angle steel, length: 2000mm
Horizontal grounding body: 40*4mm hot galvanized flat steel, length: according to the
requirement
Grounding lead-in cable: 40*4mm hot galvanized flat steel, length: according to the
requirement.
Besides, the grounding system of BTS3012A BTS includes the grounding of the antenna
support, the grounding of the stay-wire towers and the grounding of the cable rack etc.
Among which, the requirement towards the protective angle from the antenna support or
stay-wire towers to the arrester of the antenna is 45 in plain area; and it is 30 in
mountain and thundery areas. It would be better for the lightning rod lead of the support
or the stay-wire tower to adopt 40mm*4mm galvanized flat steel. Solder this steel with the

Preparation Guide to GSM BTS3012A Installation

flat steel of the grounding point of the grounding grid and perform the anti-corrosion
processing.
Grounding strip should be set up when installing BTS3012A outdoors. The grounding bar
can be fixed on the support. Before entering the cable-through window, the BTS feeder
cable, power cable, E1 signal cable or the metal strengthened chip of the optical cable,
etc. must be grounded through this strip reliably, and the connection points must be
performed with anti-corrosion processing.

Preparation for the introduction of external power supply

The introduction of the external power supply can be achieved via each of the following
methods: 1. introduce the power from neighboring users or buildings; 2. introduce the
power from the secondary winding of the neighboring transformer. The transformer may
be the one existing or the one newly founded by importing high voltage cable from a long
distance. The remote importing of the power cable usually adopts the aerial mode. And it
is required that the last section led to the BTS should be no longer than 50m, and be
connected to the BTS via bury mode. As this section adopts electrical power cable with
metal shielding layer, the two ends of the shielding layer should be grounded.
For the convenience of use and management, power distribution box and ammeter
should be installed before importing the external power to the BTS. Because most of the
installation environment of the outdoor BTS is very poor, usually no room and position is
left for adding the power distribution box and ammeter, and moreover, with waterproof
and sun-proof being considered, additional auxiliary equipment is needed to solve these
problems. Thus its considerable to add power distribution box and ammeter at the import
end of the external power supply. Considering the function of the lightning arrester, fuse
and air-break switch shouldnt be placed inside the power distribution box because they
may be blown easily by the thunder current. If so, then the lighting protection box inside
the BTS cant function as it should do, and cause BTS power failure.
To ensure security of human body and equipment, protective measures should be
adopted when importing external power supply, and the erecting and laying of the cable
should meet the related industry standards.

Preparation Guide to GSM BTS3012A Installation

4.2.4 Transmission Import

The transmission modes that can be adopted for BTS3012A are as follows: SDH,
microwave, HDSL, and E1 etc. In BTS3012A, it offers space and interface for other builtin transmission equipment besides the E1 transmission mode that meets the G.703
Specification.
1)
2)
3)

The reserved space in the cabinet is 195U310mm(WHD).

The leading-out part of the cabinet reserves cable outlet for microwave and SDH.
BTS3012A provides three kinds of power supplies such as +24VDC, -48VDC and
220VAC for the transmission equipment. If the built-in transmission equipment needs
48VDC power supply, then, transmission power supply should be selected and
configured.

Adopting optical transmission mode

ADSS optical cable (non-metal self-supporting optical cable) is recommended for the last
segment in the aerial mode. Optical cable with metal protection layer also can be used,
and the both ends should be grounded at its neighborhood.
After the optical fiber is led into the cabinet, access it to the tail fiber after splicing. The
fiber-splicing box and the optical transmitter and receiver can be placed into the internal
attached equipment frame of the cabinet as 5U room has been reserved.
Inside the cabinet, three kinds of power supplies, namely, +24VDC, -48VDC and 220VAC
can be provided for the transmission equipment.

Adopting microwave transmission mode

When adopting microwave transmission mode, the indoor unit of the microwave
transmission equipment can be placed into the attached equipment frame where room
has been reserved for the transmission equipment. Inside the cabinet, three kinds of
power supplies, +24VDC, -48VDC and 220VAC can also be provided for the transmission
equipment.

Adopting HDSL mode

HDSL is adopted where microwave is hard to erect and optical fiber is hard to reach, and
it is used to provide transmission between BTS and BSC in short terms. When adopting
this mode, inside the attached equipment frame of the cabinet, the position of the HDSL
equipment and the power supply have already been considered. But its necessary for the
user to adopt lightning protection measures towards the in-lead subscriber line.

Adopting E1 mode

In some special cases, E1 mode may be adopted to provide transmission. When E1

cable is directly used in the BTS, aerial transmission mode should be avoided. If the
mode is necessary, the E1 cable must adopt cable with metal jacket. During the
construction, grounding should be performed to the metal jacket in the shielded layer of
signal cable by using the grounding clip, just similar to the feeder grounding clip. Ground
cable led out by the lightning-proof grounding clip should be connected to the protective
grounding bar of the BTS. The longest transmission distance of 75-ohm trunk cable is
200m, so adding additional transmission equipment should be considered when the
distance is more than 200m.
BTS3012A supports 75 ohm, and 120 ohm E1 transmission mode. Single cabinet can
provide 4 pairs of E1 at most.

4.2.5 Installing Preparation for Type Support

During the installation of the BTS3012A outdoor equipment, the cabling and bundling of
the feeder, jumper, transmission lead-in, power lead-in and battery cable etc. are
important points. According to the site deployment experience and through sufficient
demonstrations, Huawei designs the type support installation mode. The user can
prepare materials according to the dimensions.
See figure below for the effect after the installation of the type support.

Figure 1.1 Elevation view of BTS3012A installing type support

Preparation Guide to GSM BTS3012A Installation

Figure 1.2 Top view of BTS3012A installing type support

type support is composed of vertical and horizontal cable ladders and support bracket.
The length of the vertical cable ladder is 2100mm, and horizontal ladder 3000mm. The
width of the cable ladder should be 400mm.
The cable ladders may adopt channel steel and horizontal support levers as the main
rack, among which the channel steel acts as the vertical beams and the horizontal
support levers as horizontal beams. When mounting the ladder, the only thing to do is just
to connect the vertical support levers and channel steel with fasteners. The distance
between two vertical support levers is 250mm. Because the distance between two holes
of the channel steel is 50mm, each vertical support lever should be fixed onto the channel
steel every 5 holes. When the cable ladder is ready for vertical installation of the cabling
rack in the equipment room, the side of the ladder with bolt heads should be placed
downward so that there is no bulge on the upside of the ladder, which fits for the
installation of the cable channel. The basic structure of the cable ladder is as follows:

Preparation Guide to GSM BTS3012A Installation

Figure 1.3 Structure of the cable ladder

The cable ladder can also be made by melding flat steel. Because its used outdoors, all
the items of the ladder should be galvanized and the bare surface should be painted with
anti-rust paint after the ladder is cut on-site, this is to ensure anti-rust and its beauty.
The vertical cable ladder should be fastened to the cement ground. The joints are fixed at
the bottom of the vertical cable ladder, and fastened to the ground by using plug bolt. The
ladder can also be fastened by using other common installation parts.

Figure 1.4 Connection between the vertical cable ladder and ground
See figure below for the connection between vertical and horizontal cable ladders

Preparation Guide to GSM BTS3012A Installation

Figure 1.5 Connection between vertical and horizontal cable ladders

Because the type support isnt a stable structure, its necessary to reinforce it by using
support bracket. The bracket may adopt the 40*40*4 angel steel, with a length of
2650mm. The upper part of the bracket should be soldered with the horizontal cable
ladder or be connected to the horizontal cable ladder with bolts. And the bottom part
should be fastened to the pre-set cement pedestal by using plug bolt after the installation
parts are installed, or it can also be fastened by burying it into cement.

Figure 1.6 support bracket schematic drawing of BTS3012A type support

Because the outdoor installation of BTS3012A adopts suspension mounting, all the cable
ladders and brackets can only be installed after the installation of the equipment.
Customers can prepare materials and tools according to the above mentioned
requirements and begin to install the type support once the installation of the cabinet
finished, then install and connect all the cables.
