CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Our project is mainly focussed on creating a sustainable way of recycling the
degradable wastes into organic manures and pesticides. Our team implemented
this project in Puliyamparai Village, Gudalur town, Nilgiris for 5 days.

We

organized an awareness camp which emphasizes on recycling waste, through

distribution of 2 dust bins for each family, and guided the villagers on
segregation of wastes and recycling the degradable ones, through hands-on
training in Vermicomposting methods.
OBJECTIVE
The main objective of our community engagement project is to create
awareness about the ill effects of daily wastes on environment and providing a
sustainable solution to this problem by recycling the degradable wastes into
organic pesticides and manures, which can be used as an alternative source for
chemical fertilizers, which enriches the soils fertility and longevity, thus
safeguarding our soil for our future generations.
NEED FOR THE PROJECT
Our project was implemented in a rural village where people had no idea
how to dispose the daily wastes in an environment-friendly way, and it is very
essential for every village to be clean of garbage, since agricultural lands in the
village get mostly affected through littering.

GEOGRAPHICAL PROFILE OF THE PROJECT

6

Puliyamparai village is located 7 Kms away from Gudalur town, Nilgiris

which is home for more than 250 families. The major occupation of people is
agriculture. It is located on a sloppy terrain where Tea, Paddy, Ginger, Plantain
and Spices are cultivated. Most of the farmers use chemical fertilisers in their
field and our project helped them to learn natural ways of farming

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

The scope of the project is to impart knowledge on effective utilization of
degradable wastes into organic manures, which helps to replace chemical
fertilizers, and also allocating a resource person, who will collect wastes,
converts and sells them to farmers at a lower price. Also, hands-on training has
been provided to farmers on vermicomposting techniques and its environmental
significance.

CHAPTER 5
PROJECT IMPACT
SOCIO/ ECONOMIC/ ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF THE
PROJECT
20

The core theme of our project is to create an impact on the society. And
thereby we have grouped various impacts depending upon the nature of the
project.
SOCIAL
From the concern of our contribution, we have thought the students of the
particular school about the computer literacy, which has created a good impact
on a social cause. The beneficiary from the training was up to the mark & we
were able to see that through the feedback which they gave to us. Im sure that
this would have created a social impact on the particular locality of students.
ECONOMIC
We are very confident that our project had a good economic impact
among the people on the particular location. The People of Pethanaikanur
village was less aware of the importance of the economic wealth of their family.
In order to bring out a difference in the particular village, we focused on this
area. All throughout the week, we have empowered the women by teaching the
skill of tailoring by highly trained professionals. To add up with, we have
contributed a tailoring machine to the particular panchayath which will really
make a difference in their life cycle.
The women from the village were initially going for wages on the daily basis,
but due to some circumstances they couldnt earn wages. So we took up an
initiative & made them to get used to this kind of self-employment ways. Just
immediate after this project we & also the people from the village felt that they
could earn a considerable amount of rupees at the end of the day. We felt that
we have met our objective to the best in terms of economic as concern.
THE PROJECT SUSTAINABILITY PLAN
The project is sustainable in the way that we have imparted knowledge to
them about the Employability, We have provided them with the resource
21

availability & they will be independent to some extent and its helps them to
spend a relaxed life with enough money for their family. We have made this
clear to the particular people and they are very keen about the work & future
use of this work which will never put them in the trouble. Recently, the
information given by the panchayath leader is that the project is effectively
running upon in the village. We hope that the sustainability of the project will
last for a long time.
FURTHER SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
We have provided the awareness about the Employability of the women
& the ways to get self-employed with the resources available within their
location. We have also taken some initiative from some small scale business for
sponsorship for equipping the people of the particular village with more number
of machines in future. We expect a good efficiency from this particular project
as of now.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE & LEARNINGS
1. ABINAYA.N
I had an Extra-ordinary experience from the past one week. I had learnt
how to approach & to deal with different people. The people were unaware of
what was actually happening in and around them. In spite of the resource
availability they were not broad minded to make use of it. We helped them to
understand the importance of the work and its benefits. Apart from project
prescriptive i felt satisfied that i have done something which is really benefited
for others.
2. ABERAMI.P.S
I had an experience that couldnt be experienced in words. Im shocked
when I enter into the village, I could see the unawareness of the people who
needs some input to make them live better. So I have contributed some of my
22

knowledge to the needy people and the childrens of the village. I still couldnt
believe that a week has passed upon just like that, but from my heart I could say
that I have done some justice to my work & made a peer to get exposed to the
new things.
3. BALA SUBRAMANIAM.S.M
I had a different experience of being with rural people and understanding
their life style. In spite of various initiatives and schemes introduced by our
government, people of Pethanaikanur village panchayat are still not aware of the
standard of living and they didnt know the benefit they ripe out it. i am very
happy that i was the part of the team to impart the employment literacy to those
people, which is very essential for their livelihood. i not only have the
satisfaction of serving those people but i learned to be with people, interact with
them which will help me in my career.
4. RAHUL PRASANTH.G
I was having a very new experience for a week during cep. Before
educating the people I myself learnt various methods that could really bring out
a change in their life. Then I had had a good experience in interacting with
people. I felt very satisfied that i served the community. Apart from service i
learned various concepts related to my MBA. I felt very satisfied when
everyone in the village showed their interest in learning a new one.
5. ROOPAKUMAR.M
I had a wholesome experience for serving to the rural people for a week
for a social cause and the interest. The village people are very much interested
to know about for what reason we were approaching their village and they gave
very good response for our program and the cooperation given by them made
me feel comfort. This community engagement program helped me to learn how
to approach the people and know their employability skill and their involvement
23

towards their job. I felt happy that i have contributed something to the
community and i am sure that this program will have the great impact for the
people in the village and this program will make a difference in each and every
one of their lives.
6. SURABI.C
A week at a Pethanaikanur- An experience which pulled my memory out
of the box. I thoroughly enjoyed the six days of the project. Apart from which I
have made things clear for the particular group of people for their welfare. I
really feel the risk involved in the Sustainability of any person when exposed to
a new environment. In spite of it, as a human I have done some worthy things
during the project. The level of understanding of the people was really to the
peak, but we have put ourselves in their shoes & taught them. I could say I have
made an impact in each & every one of them to whom I have met in the village.
Im hoping for the best in future.

CONCLUSION
An interesting project like CEP had given a good experience on the
field knowledge & also the behavioural aspect of the society. As MBA aspirants,
our roles should be into community engagement & not only as a project, rather
it should be a habit. If each one of us started to think like this, then in future it
would a huge revolution & will really Make a Difference.
