DEPARTURE SEPARATION
Note: This task is a special emphasis area for all tower examinations except the
VATUSA S1 Examination.
REFERENCE: FAA ORDER 7110.65 Chapter 3 Section 8 and Section 9
Paragraph 5-8; LAX-TWR
OBJECTIVE: To determine that the student:
1. Allows only 1 aircraft to operate on a runway at a time unless one of the following
occurs:
a. Formation flights
b. No aircraft is departing or landing on the runway, or any departure or arrival is
past the portion of the runway being used or a departure is airborne and turning
to avoid any conflict
c. A land and hold short clearance has been issued which prevents a conflict

2. Separates departing IFR aircraft by one of the following unless objective 4

applies:
a. 3 miles.
b. 1 mile if courses are to diverge by 15 degrees immediately after departure.
c. 15 degree course divergence, provided the courses of the aircraft will diverge
immediately after departure, and the aircraft are operating from parallel or
diverging runways whose centerlines are at least 2500 feet apart.
d. Visual separation provided by the tower as long as other approved separation
will exist at the tower airspace boundary.
e. Other approved separation.
3. Separates IFR departures from IFR Arrivals by one of the following:
a. 2 miles at the start of the departing aircrafts takeoff roll, if separation will
increase to 3 miles within 1 minute after takeoff.
b. 3 miles.
c. Assigns a heading that diverges at least 30 degrees from the missed approach
course of the arriving aircraft as specified in FAA ORDER 7110.65 Chapter 5
Section 8 Paragraph 5.
d. Visual separation provided by the tower as long as other approved separation
will exist at the tower airspace boundary.
e. Other approved separation.
4. Applies 2 minute or 5 mile separation to aircraft departing behind a heavy/757
aircraft.
5. Applies separation specified in FAA ORDER 7110.65 Chapter 3 Section 8
Paragraph 8 when intersecting runways are in use.
Note: In objective 4 5 mile separation may be replaced with 4 mile separation if the
following aircraft is of heavy type and 2 minutes must be replaced with 3 minutes if the
following aircraft is of small type.
Note: Objective 2.c. need not be applied immediately after departure at KLAX per
5-c-8 of the KLAX SOP.

ARRIVAL SEPARATION
Note: This task is a special emphasis area for all tower examinations except the
VATUSA S1 Examination
REFERENCE: FAA ORDER 7110.65 Chapter 3 Section 10 Paragraph 3-4
OBJECTIVE: To determine that the student:
1. Allows only 1 aircraft to operate on a runway at a time unless one of the following
occurs:
a. Formation flights
b. No aircraft is departing or landing on the runway, or any departure or arrival is
past the portion of the runway being used or a departure is airborne and turning
to avoid any conflict
c. A land and hold short clearance has been issued which prevents a conflict
d. Same runway separation is applied between two landing aircraft
2. Separates arriving IFR aircraft by one of the following unless paragraph 4 or 5
is applied:
a. 3 miles or 2.5 miles where authorized unless 1000 feet vertical separation is
applied
b. Visual separation provided by the tower.
c. For parallel ILS approaches, ensures aircraft do not infringe on the notransgression zone, and establishes other approved separation in the event of
dual missed approaches.
d. For simultaneous visual approaches not requiring pilot maintained visual
separation, established other approved separation in the event of dual
goarounds.
e. Other approved separation.
3. Applies separation specified in FAA ORDER 7110.65 Chapter 3 Section 10
Paragraph 4 when intersecting runways are in use.
4. Applies the following separation for small aircraft operating directly behind another
aircraft measured when the first aircraft is over the runway threshold unless other
approved separation is applied:
a. 4 miles behind a large aircraft.
b. 5 miles behind a 757 aircraft.
c. 6 miles behind a heavy aircraft.
5. Applies the following separation for aircraft directly following a large/757 aircraft to the
same or parallel runways within 2500 feet unless other approved separation is applied:
a. 4 miles for a heavy aircraft following a heavy aircraft.
b. 4 miles for a large aircraft following a B757 aircraft.
c. 5 miles for a small aircraft following a heavy/B757 aircraft.
d. 5 miles for a large aircraft following a heavy aircraft.

CLASS C SEPARATION
Note: This TASK is a special emphasis area for all tower examinations except the
VATUSA S1 examination.
REFERENCES: FAA ORDER 7110.65 Chapter 7 Section 8
OBJECTIVE: To determine that the student:
1. Separates VFR aircraft operating in Class C airspace from IFR aircraft using
one of the following:
a. Target Resolution
b. 500 feet vertically
c. Visual Separation
d. Notwithstanding the above, applies proper wake turbulence separation when
required.
CLASS B SEPARATION
Note: This TASK is a special emphasis area for the tower solo and Class B tower
examination.
REFERENCES: FAA ORDER 7110.65 Chapter 7 Section 9
OBJECTIVE: To determine that the student:
1. Separates VFR aircraft operating in Class B airspace from other VFR/IFR
aircraft using one of the following:
a. Target Resolution unless either aircraft weighs more than 19000 pounds, then
by 1.5 miles laterally
b. 500 feet vertically
c. Visual Separation
d. Notwithstanding the above, applies proper wake turbulence separation when
required.
