Increased British interest in Brunei in the nineteenth century Extract A: Early British interest From 1840 all the Sultans of Brunei were affected by the British presence in Brunei. James Brooke first arrived in the region in 1839. He soon became involved in the internal affairs of Brunei and as a result the Sultan confirmed him as Governor of Sarawak in 1842, Later he was the Raja there. At first Brooke was acting in his own personal interest but his presence soon led 5 to the British government being involved too. Treaties were signed between the two governments involving both Labuan (1846) and a Treaty of Friendship and Commerce (1847). 5 Also in the 1840s the USA showed interest in the area and in 1850.it too made a Treaty of Friendship and Commerce with Brunei. ' 10 Extract B: The British North Borneo Company As the Brooke family. was increasing its interest in-Sarawak, the area further east (now Sabah) was receiving attention from westerners.too..In 1865 Charles Lee Moses secured a lease of land from the Sultan and there followed a series of events which led to the formation of the British North Borneo Company in 1881.
