Required Course Text

Riggio, R. E. (2013). Industrial/Organizational Psychology (6th ed.). Upper Saddle
River, NJ: Prentice Hall.
Course Description
This course offers a broad description and examination of the psychology of behavior at
work, including the major theories, their applications in the workplace, and research
investigations of both. The course will examine job analysis, employee selection,
employee training, the performance appraisal process, worker motivation, job
satisfaction, worker stress, communication in the workplace, groups processes in the
workplace, leadership and power, organizational structure and development, human
factors in work design, and work conditions and work safety. These topics will be
illuminated through lectures, in-class discussions, readings, exercises, self-assessments,
and videos.
Course Requirements
Participation
As part of this course, you are required to participate in a weekly discussion section with
a TA. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR REGISTERING FOR A SECTION. This is
not done automatically when you register for the course. Since we do not take attendance
in lecture, attendance in ALL discussion sections is mandatory. In the case of illness (as
verified by a doctors note) or family emergencies, you will be allowed to make up the

section attendance points by writing a 2-page paper on the topic of discussion for the day
that you missed. The make up assignment must be completed within 1 week. In order for
your attendance to be counted by your TA, you must attend the section for which you
are enrolled. There are no exceptions to this policy! If you want to attend another
section, you can only do so by officially enrolling in that section. DO NOT CONTACT
THE TAs ABOUT SWAPPING SECTIONS!
Exams
There will be three in-class exams, each lasting about 45 minutes. Exams will consist of
multiple choice, true/false, and (perhaps) short answer questions. Exams will cover all
materials in the course. For the exams, you need to bring Scantron-type scoring sheets
(Form No. F-289-PAR-L). Exams are not cumulative.

Late or make-up exams will not be given in this class.
If you miss an exam due to a non-medical reason (e.g., overslept, took a trip, had a job
interview, went to a wedding, etc.) and/or miss the exam due to a medical reason but have
no documentation to back it up, your grade on that exam will be zero. There are no
exceptions.
If you miss the first exam (due to a documented, medical reason), your grade for the
second exam will be doubled.
If you miss the second exam (due to a documented, medical reason), your grade for the
third exam will be doubled.
If you miss the third exam (due to a documented, medical reason), your grade for the
second exam will be doubled.
If you miss more than one exam, your grade for one of them will be zero. There are no
exceptions. Documentation must be provided within 1 week of the exam.
Pop Quizzes
Unannounced quizzes will be given throughout the quarter in your discussion section.
More quizzes may be added depending on the needs of the class. Typically, the quizzes
will be given at the beginning of class and will cover the current weeks materials. I will
drop your lowest quiz score. If you miss a quiz for any reason, you will receive a 0. Be
prepared to take quizzes by bringing a Scantron (Form No. F-289-PAR-L) with you to
every discussion section.
Extra Credit
Depending on the progress of the class, you MAY be given opportunities to earn extra
credit throughout the course. The extra credit offering is not guaranteed, rather, it is given
at the discretion of the instructor. The extra credit can boost your class standing by an

additional 2%, which could be the difference that elevates your score to the next higher
level grade. I will inform you about the extra credit opportunities.
Grading Scale
All course materials (except those graded on pass basis) will adhere to the following
grading scale:

Course Guidelines
Disruptions
Please be here on time at the start of class. Late arrivals may miss important
announcements and are generally disruptive to others learning. We are all late on
occasion, so if you do happen to be late, please enter quietly and find a seat in the back.
Be sure to ask a neighbor or friend after class about any announcements or notes you may
have missed. Also, please turn off all cell phones and pagers and refrain from talking
during lecture. We have a large class and we need to be respectful of those around us
who are trying to learn.
Appealing Grades
All assignments and exams will be evaluated as accurately as possible. In the event of a
disagreement, you may follow these steps to resolve the issue, as well as promote your
learning:
1. Prepare and document your rationale for the appeal
2. Appeal your case in writing to me
I will review your case and if appropriate, make any necessary adjustments.
Academic Integrity
Plagiarism, cheating and other violations will not be tolerated. Violations will be subject
to severe penalties in accordance with UCR procedures (e.g., receiving an F for the
course and/or expulsion from the University).

Students with Disabilities

It is the responsibility of students with disabilities to inform the instructor within the first
two weeks of the semester/session of the need for reasonable accommodation of their
disabilities. Students are advised to seek assistance from Disabled Students Services
(DSS) on campus. As soon as the need for accommodation is determined by DSS and the
need is communicated to the instructor by DSS, reasonable accommodations will be
made.
