COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO)

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. apply the principles of statics and dynamics to solve engineering
problems (C3)
2. sketch related diagram to be used in problem solving (C3)
3. study the theory of engineering mechanics to solve related
engineering problems in group (A3)

5.1.1 importance of dynamics in engineering.

BASIC CONCEPTS IN
DYNAMICS
CLO 1. apply the principles of statics and dynamics to solve
engineering problems (C3)

Dynamics is still included in mechanical,

aerospace, and other engineering curriculums
because of its importance in machine design,
the design of land, sea, air, and space
vehicles and other applications.

CLO 3. study the theory of engineering mechanics to solve

related engineering problems in group (A3)

The concept of a dynamical system has its

origins in Newtonian mechanics

Terms:
mechanics - the study of forces and their effects
matter - any substance that occupies space
body - matter bounded by a closed surface
mass - quantitative measure of a body's resistance
to a change in its motion; used to measure inertia
weight - the force of gravity acting on a body;
depends on location (W=mg)
force - the action of one body on another
concentrated force - represents a loading which is
assumed to act at a point on a body
particle - an object with mass but whose size can
be ignored

Dynamics - the study of the accelerated motion of

bodies

Kinematics which treats only in geometric aspects of

the motion
Kinetics which analysis of the forces causing the
motion.

The angular velocity describes the speed of

rotation and the orientation of the instantaneous
axis about which the rotation occurs. The direction
of the angular velocity pseudovector will be along
the axis of rotation; in this case (counter-clockwise
rotation) the vector points up.

two dimensions the angular velocity is given by

This is related to the cross-radial (tangential) velocity by

An explicit formula for v in terms of v and is:

Combining the above equations gives a formula for :

The angular acceleration can be defined as either:

Angular acceleration is the rate of change of angular velocity. In SI

units, it is measured in radians per second squared (rad/s2), and is
usually denoted by the Greek letter alpha ().

, where
is the angular velocity,
is the linear tangential
acceleration, and r is the distance from the origin of the coordinate
system that defines and to the point of interest.
