EssentialPreparation:
1. Reminder:Gothroughthestudentstudyguidecarefully,allmaterialsassigned,andthe
instructionsonthissheet.Remembertolimityourselftousingthevocabularyand
structuresthestudentsarelearning.Thisisoneofthehardestpartsofteachingbeginning
students.Youneedtopracticespeakingusingtheirvocabulary.
2. Reminder:Besuretogothroughthisconversationguidecarefullyandprepareyourself
foreachexercise.Preparenecessarymaterialsasneeded.
3. AlwaysgiveinstructionsandresponsestostudentsinsimpleTurkish.Youneedtothink
aboutthisandpracticeaheadoftime.Remembertotrainyourselftouseacommonsetof
instructionsandresponses.Youcanstartaddmorecomplicatedinstructions,particularly
sincethestudentsarenowlearningthepresentprogressivetense.
4. Prepareforavocabularydrillbyprintingoutpicturesorbringingmagazinepicturesthat
arecolorfulandcontainavarietyofobjectswhichcorrespondtothestudentsvocabulary
knowledge.ThiswillbeusedinPartCforareviewofthestructuresandvocabulary
studentshavebeenlearning.
5. Bringinamapofcampusforareviewofdirections.
6. Fromtheidentitycardsthatyouhavecreatedforthelast6sessions,choosetheones
whichrequireastudenttoaddressthepersonformallyforpracticewiththepresent
progressiveinaformalcontext.

Remindstudentsthattherewillbe10minutesattheendofthesessioninwhichtheycanaskyou
questionsinEnglish.ParticularlysinceUnit5wasareviewchapter,encouragethemtoask
questionsaboutUnits1,2,3,and4inordertoensuretheyhaveasolidunderstandingofthe
materialcoveredinthoseunits.Afterexplainingthis,trytosticktoTurkishorbodylanguageor
illustrationsthroughoutthesession.

Movefromstudenttostudent,butgivestudentsplentyoftimetothinkandrespondbefore
helpingthemalong.Thegroupshouldbeinacircleofchairsoraroundatable.
