Essential Preparation:
1. Go through the student study guide carefully, all materials assigned, and the instruction
on this sheet. Remember to confine yourself to using the vocabulary and structures the
students are learning.
2. Go through this conversation guide carefully and prepare yourself for each exercise.
Prepare necessary materials as needed.
3. Remember to prepare and give instructions and responses to students in simple Turkish.
Remember that you can gradually add more complicated instructions and responses as the
semester progresses.
4. Bring in any other supplementary materials such as multimedia activities that you think
may add to the cultural discussion about typical Turkish homes vs. typical American
homes.
5. Select vocabulary from the last 3 units for the vocabulary drill in Part A.
6. Remember to have students sit in a circle of chairs or around a table and encourage them
to get up and move around when acting out the dialogues.
Lesson Plan:
Tell students at beginning of session that there will be 10 minutes at the end of the session in
which they can ask you questions in English.
Part A: Whole group together (10-15 minutes)
Move from student to student, but give students plenty of time to think and respond before
helping them along. The group should be in a circle of chairs or around a table.
Greetings
Greet students as a group as well as individually. Initiate casual conversation asking them about
their weekend plans, what occurred during the week etc. Use only structures students are familiar
with and know how to use.
Vocabulary drill
Distribute 2-3 words to each student from the vocabulary words you selected from the last three
Units. Ask each student to create 2-3 sentences using the vocabulary words, the present
progressive, the definite past, and the various postpositions they are familiar with.

Part B: Students work in pairs for dialogue practice (15-20 minutes)

Scenario I: Students will reenact the dialogues they wrote for homework that are similar to the
one in Unit 14, section 1.
Scenario II: Students will role play a scenario in which someome invites a new friend to a dinner
and gives him/her directions and describes the house where the dinner will be held. Have
students switch roles.
Scenario III: Students will complete the class activity on page 310 in Unit 14 with their dialogue
partner.
Part C: Whole group together (15-20 minutes)
Activity 1: Students will present what they wrote and tell other group members about what they
think are the differences between an American household and a Turkish household. Make sure
everyone has the opportunity to share.
Activity 2: Inquire about students academic work and what they do in their free time. Try to
create an informal conversation with the students and encourage them to ask each other questions.
Activity 3: Activity you prepared for a cultural activity with supplementary materials.
Give the students a chance to ask questions in English during the last 5-10 minutes. This is a
good time to discuss cultural issues that came up during the session. End the session on a
positive note. Practice appropriate parting/goodbye/see you again phrases.
