1.0 OBJECTIVES
The main objectives of this experiment are to install and converge a plug flow reactor and to
simulate a process involving reaction.
2.0 PROCESS
One of the routes to produce acetic anhydride is by the vapor phase cracking of acetone to
produce ketene and methane:

C2H6O

C2H2O+ CH4

This reaction is first order with respect to acetone. The feed condition is 8000 kg/hr of acetone
at 760oC and 150 kPa.
Hint:
1. Use Wilson property package.
2. Qout = 0 W, P = 50 kPa
3. Assume

Length: 30 m
Inner diameter: 0.5 m

4. Kinetics:

Forward: A = 8.2 x 1014, E = 2.85 x 105 kJ/mol

Reverse: A = 0, E = 0

5. The length and inner diameter can be changed to achieve specific goal.

3.0 PROCEDURE
1. Firstly, Aspen HYSIS software was opened and the new sheet was applied.
2. Then, the Thermodynamic fluid package and components involve in this reaction was
selected using Wilson package. The components involved were acetone, ketene and
methane.

3. The stream was chose (Stream 1) and added to the simulation field.
4. Then, the plug flow reactor (PFR) was added followed by second stream output of the
PFR (Stream 2).
5. All the information given in the question was filled for stream 1 and the PFR itself.
6. Next, the reaction type was specified to kinetic reaction in order to fill the required
constant A and E in reaction part.

7. With the original length and diameter given (20m and 0.5 m D), the conversion obtained
was about 40%. So, in order to achieve at least 20% conversion, the length and diameter
of PFR tube was modified by trial and error method.
8. The software was saved and closed after valuable data have been recorded.

6.0 QUESTION AND DISCUSSION

1. What is the volume of PFR to achieve at least 20% conversion of acetone?

-In order to achieve at least 20% conversion of acetone, the length and diameter of
PFRs tube must be adjusted by trial and error method. So, the suitable length and
diameter of tube obtained to convert the required acetone amount is 20 m and 0.0466 m
respectively. The volume obtained to achieve 20% conversion is 0.03411 m 3 for PFR
with the void volume 0.0307 m3.

7.0 CONCLUSION
As a conclusion, by using Aspen HYSIS software, the value of length and tube obtained to
achieve 20% conversion is 20 m tube length and 0.0466 m tube diameter.
