To carry out integrative medical prevention and
treatment of oral diseases, based on the inheritance
and development of traditional medicine as well as the
application of modern scientific, technique and medical
theory, is of great significance in oral health maintenance.
Certain achievements of the integrative traditional Chinese
and Western medicine (TCM-WM) have been obtained
in the recent several years in clinical and experimental
studies and theoretic exploration of oral diseases, which
are introduced briefly as follows.
Diseases of Oral Mucosa
1. Recurrent aphtha
By TCM syndrome differentiation, recurrent aphtha
could be differentiated into various typesand the
treatment may be scheduled depending on the syndrome
types with the self-formulated prescriptions or classic
recipes, single drug or in combination after modification,
applied both internally and externally on the local lesion or
by gargling, so as to enhance the efficacy by way of innerouter
concurrent administering.
For aphtha of Yin-deficiency with excessive fire
type, modified Liuwei Dihuang Pill (), Zhibai
Dihuang Pill (), Qiju Dihuang Decoction/Pill
(/), or Guishao Dihuang Decoction/Pill (
/) may be selectively administered in clinical
practice; for deficiency of Pi ()qi type, modified Buzhong
Yiqi Decoction/Pill (/), or Shenlin Baizhu
Pill (); for deficiency of Pi-yang type, modified
Fuzi Lizhong Decoction/Pill (/) or Huangqi
Jianzhong Decoction(); for deficiency of both
qi and blood type, modified Danggui Buxue Decoction
(), Bazhen Decoction (), Buzhong Yiqi
Decoction (), or Guipi Decoction ().
For aphtha of upward flaming of Xin ()-fire type,
modified Daochi Powder () may be given; for
insufficiency of Xin-qi type, modified Buxin Powder (
); for upward flaming of Gan-fire type, modified Longdan

Current Status and Prospect of Prevention and
Treatment of Oral Diseases by Integrative Medicine
XU Zhi-hong ()
Wuwei Xiaodu Decoction (), Yinqiao Powder
(), LianqiaoBaidu Pill (), or Niuhuang
Jiedu Pill (), etc.
Besides, by wholly regulation of the entire body
condition according to the TCM principle of implication of
treatment in prevention can be favourable in controlling
the disease and consolidating the efficacy.
2. Lichen planus
The comprehensive treatment of TCM-WM may

be applied following the principles of nourishing yin and

blood, soothing Gan () to resolve stagnant qi, acitivating
blood circulation and cooling blood heat, supplementing
Pi and clearing heat respectively in various phases of
lichen planus depending on the combination of syndrome
differentiation and disease differentiation. Taixian
Decoction (, consisted of cornflower herb, Chinese
angelica root, scutellaria root, red thorowax root, barbary
wolfberry fruit, tree peony bark, turmeric root, etc.) may be
taken as the basic prescription used after modification.
3. Acute inflammation of oral mucosa
The TCM therapy of clearing heat, detoxifying,
releiving swelling, eliminating dampness, activating blood
circulation and cooling blood heat may be markedly
effective in treating such diseases as acute infectious
aphtha, acute herpetic aphtha and acute allergic aphtha by
using selectively such recipes as Yinqiao Powder, Wuwei
Xiaodu Decoction, Kouyankang (), etc.
4. Others
For Behcet's Syndrome, both strengthening vital
qi and eleminating pathogenic factors should be paid
attention to, modified Dihuang Decoction , Jingui
