2-4 Principles
2-4-1 Photography principles
Slit light which enters the cornea gets through it and reaches the aqueous humor. Part of the light is reflected
on the front of the cornea in the boundary whose refraction index is different.
When the light reflected on the backside of the cornea is magnified, it can be observed as an image, because
the cells on the backside of the cornea are uneven.

Cornea
Photography
system (P)
22.5
22.5

R'
R

Illumination
system (I)

S'
S

Arrange the illumination system (I) and the photography system (P) so that the normal line which is perpendicular to the cornea may divide into I and P equally. Consequently the light is reflected on the backside of
the cornea. Move the instrument while keeping the angles of I and P uniform so that the normal line may
divide into I and P equally. So the front reflection of the cornea (S'-S) and the backside reflection of the cornea (endothelium cells R'-R) can be observed.

2-4-2 Corneal thickness measurement principles

Slit light is slantingly emitted for the patient's cornea and the light reflected by the front and backside of the
cornea is brought in by the line sensor.
The corneal thickness is calculated by using the interval (L) between the front reflection image and backside
reflection image on the line sensor.

2-4-3 Photographed position detection function

XY detection function: This function focuses the spot XY LED ray reflected on the cornea on XY sensor to
detect the XY shift and direction.
Z detection function : Slit light as illumination light is brought into the cornea. As mentioned above, when
the spot XY LED ray is brought into the XY sensor, the light is turned on and the
front reflection (S'-S) and the backside reflection (endothelium cells R'-R) are done.
Electrically the Z sensor detects the position of the front reflection.
Automatic alignment is done according to the detection results of the XY detection
and Z detection. When the XY alignment and Z alignment are in the OK range, photographing is done automatically.

Set the corneal thickness test eyes (three test eyes with different thickness) onto the chinrest
unit.
Select "GROUP-B PACHOMETRY ADJUST" in the "FACTORY MENU" program.
The corneal thickness of the test eye as a reference is displayed on the monitor screen as
shown below. Change the value with the [Chinrest up/down] switches and change the digit
with the selector switch to adjust finely in order to get the corneal thickness of the test eye to
be measured.

By using the [Image selector] switch, move to the approximate position of the test eye,
which is the target displayed on the screen. Measurement is performed ten times according
to automatic alignment.
Repeat the procedure of above 3 and 4 by using the three test eyes. The correction values
are displayed and they are automatically written in EEPROM. Then, press any switch to
