Without grammar

very little can be conveyed,

without vocabulary
nothing can be conveyed.
David Wilkins

Introduction
Vocabulary is central to English language teaching because without sufficient
vocabulary students cannot understand others or express their own ideas and is
the basic tool of writing. Also, it is a necessary ingredient for all communication
target. Language learners encounter vocabulary on a daily basis, and must be
able to acquire and retain it. As language teachers, one of their main tasks is to
help students develop a rich and useful vocabulary inventory. When learning a
foreign language, our individual vocabulary in that language is one of the most
important micro-skills to develop. Of course, all micro-skills like grammar,
vocabulary and pronunciation are important. But it is far more difficult to
communicate with no vocabulary than with no grammar.
There are two kinds of vocabulary, the passive and the active vocabulary; the
active vocabulary on a person consists of those words that we can use correctly in
his own speech and writing. He fully understands the meaning of those words. It is
also called working or functional vocabulary and the passive vocabulary of a
person consists of those words which we recognize when we encounter them in
print or in the speech of others. We can make out the meanings of those words
e.g. while reading an editorial in the newspaper, we find a number of unfamiliar
words, but we have not sufficient mastery over those words. We are able to judge
their meanings from the context but cant use them in our own speech and in a
piece of writing. It is also called recognition vocabulary. Passive Vocabulary is
always larger than Active Vocabulary.

Vocabulary like I already said its the key to communicate successfully with other
people. Words are the currency of communication. A robust vocabulary improves
all areas of communication, Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. I would
introduce the vocabulary encountering new words, getting a clear image of the
form of the vocabulary item (visual or auditory or both), getting the word meaning,
have consolidation of form and meaning in memory and use the words as tips for
learning words. For me, using visual aids is the best way to introduce vocabulary
because when the teacher wants the student to learn new words or new
languages, material like videos, flashcards, storytelling books, etc, can be used
and everything that the student can observe and talk about is productive and
practice the speaking habilty.
Moreover, as for materials to introduce vocabulary, I would record information
about new words students decide to learn, this would help the them to know what
the word means and later they have it in mind and they would know what the
meaning is, for example, they can write the meaning and then put a picture of what
it is and that is a way for them to learn vocabulary. Another way is to learn words
that go with the key word you are learning, this is to developed in them their
knowledge and make them think in the words that come first to their mind and write
or say if it has sense with the key word that they are learning. A good one is to
crate a word web, because in this way students have to use a lot of words to
make this web, and maybe it would be easy for them to start learning vocabulary.
Also work with vocabulary flashcards, because the student will be in touch with the
imagination and will talk in class about whats happening in their flashcards.
Many people learning English language often do not pay any attention to their
pronunciation. Even worse, some of them underestimate it. They think that
pronunciation is less important than grammar and vocabulary. In fact, in my opinion

pronunciation is extremely important. Many cases of misunderstanding in

communication were caused by the mispronouncing of words or the improper
intonation. For example: if someone pronounces the words fog and fox, sea and
she, sick and six with relatively no differences, in some cases can lead to a
misunderstanding. Another example: when one pronounces the word present with
stress in the first syllable, whereas she uses in the sentence Id like to present is
certainly incorrect and irritating.
What makes people interested in ones English is firstly his/her pronunciation
definitely! Good grammar and wide vocabulary are usually secondarily observed.
Therefore, good pronunciation skill can give you more self-confidence when you
speak in front of many people. So, it has become more and more obvious that
pronunciation can not be underestimated. It must become ones priority while
he/she is learning English.

Conclusion
In short, vocabulary can successfully make or break your life. These several
techniques will dramatically change how you will express yourself. But there is no
magic bullet; you cant improve your vocabulary overnight. So, the more you
practice, the more you learn.
