ANSWER: Brigade 70 may be compared to the U.S. Secret Service which employs
6,500 (3,200 special agents, 1,300 uniformed protection officers and 2,000 technical
and administrative support staff).
But the armament of Brigade 70, which includes tanks and multiple launch rocket
systems (MLRS) far exceeds the normal requirement for leadership protection. This
is because Brigade 70 has also been assigned duties along the Cambodia border (and
serves as a counter to any attempted coup).
Since the Prime Minister’s bodyguard was taken from Brigade 70 it would be smaller
in size.
Q3. Any information on the command structure of the bodyguard unit, and how
Brigade 70 relates to the unit.
ANSWER: The prime minister’s Bodyguard HQ is commanded by a person holding the
rank of General who is assisted by a Deputy Commander. The HQ as commissariats
for staff training, research and security, cooperation, social development, logistics
and finance, and technology.
Brigade 70 is outside the normal change of command of units in the Royal
Cambodian Armed Forces. It reports directly to the prime minister.
It is presently commanded by General Mao Sophan; its former commander, LT GEN
Hing Bun Heang, is now deputy chief in the Cabinet and reportedly retains overall
control.
Brigade 70 retains responsibility for protecting the Senate president, the president of
the National Assembly, the most senior officials and generals in the Defence
Ministry, Phnom Penh Municipal officials and international visitors to Cambodia.
Brigade 70 also includes a special anti‐terrorist unit, an emergency unit and military
reserve unit.
