The Pet Rescue Tailroad

As proposed by Central Florida Pug Rescue

Program Overview
The Central Florida Pug Rescue is organizing a transportation system that will coordinate
long distance rescue efforts of breed-specific pet rescues in Florida. The program,
tentatively named the Pet Rescue Tailroad, will establish a reliable network of rescues
participating in the transporting of animals that have been surrendered by their families,
placed in kill shelters, or found as strays. The purpose of the program is twofold:
1. To gain reliable partners willing to contribute volunteers or miles to helping rescue
animals across long distances.
2. To help reduce chances of animals being euthanized or given to shelters due to
inability to coordinate pick-up/travel.

How It Works
We propose a simple system that is designed for integration with the long distance
operations that are often required for relocating animals. In these instances where travel is
necessary, any rescue wishing to coordinate exchange or pick up of an animal will complete
three easy steps:
Call our phone line to speak with our full-time Transportation Coordinator
Agree upon times, dates, and pick up station
Pledge volunteers to log miles
In order to make pick up and exchange easier on the volunteers and dogs, we have brought
Petco on board. Using Petcos as pick up stations will help make sure there is no confusion
in where to meet, and will give animals a chance to get some food/water.

Participating Rescues
Rescues who wish to contribute miles of travel and volunteers to this program do not need
to change any part of their rescue operations. These three steps simply help us build a
relationship, work out details, and make the necessary arrangements to help these animals
that rely on long distance rescue efforts. When an animal requiring the services of the
Tailroad is identified, a rescue will call our 24 hour phone line (407) 444-4444, in order to
arrange dates, times, and routes for transport. The CFPR Transportation Coordinator will
pledge CFPR volunteers to participate in picking up that animal, and arrangements for
special circumstances.

Why CFPR?
As a growing breed rescue, we know the challenges and benefits of long distance rescue. In
2012, CFPR volunteers logged over 18,000 miles transporting pugs and other dogs. We
have seen pugs go to happy homes as a result of these efforts, and we want to continue
making an impact in Florida through the partnerships created from this program. Together,
the breed rescues of Florida can make travel easier and more efficient.
