A
LETTER FROM THE TE
magazine
A BITTERSWEET NEW ADVENTURE
You might not realize it, but you yes, you have had an incredible impact
on my life.
In my role as Natures Pathways Editorial Director, I am often touched by
the stories readers like you share about how very life-changing fitness, complementary and alternative health practices, mindfulness, and sustainable living
can be. Hearing what a difference Natures Pathways has made in someones life
is both inspiring and humbling. Being part of this community has brought me
incredible joy.
But just as every story no matter how sweet must come to an end, my chapter
at Natures Pathways has drawn to a close. It is with a heavy heart today that I
say farewell. I have learned and accomplished so much in my time with this
magazine, but I know in my soul that it is time for someone new to take the
reins and provide fresh leadership to this very important cause.
Im unbelievably excited to see what the future holds for Natures Pathways
and its new managing editor: Grace Olson. Grace is not only an extremely
talented editor and forward-thinking leader, she is my valued friend, and I
know she will work every day to make Natures Pathways everything it can and
should be.
Life seldom works out as we plan. But the unexpected can be just as sweet.
And while Ill miss all of you, I know our paths will cross again. Thank you and
farewell for now.

zzzs? Secrets
to getting a
good nights
sleep
................................................................
By Randi Mann, NP
etting a good nights sleep is an essential part of reducing the effects of stress on your body. Did you know that
during sleep your body does most of its healing, repairing and replenishing? Its amazing what a difference eight to nine
hours of restful sleep can make! Many exhausted women feel much
better by identifying and treating the causes of their insomnia.
bed, but wake up a few hours later fully awake and have
trouble falling back to sleep again. If you do fall back to sleep
it is shortly before your alarm goes off.
2. You fall asleep on the couch or in a chair in the evening
watching TV. You then wake up and go to bed only to find
that you cannot fall back to sleep for hours.
3. You go to bed feeling exhausted but lay there for hours unable
to quiet your mind and turn off your thoughts so you can fall
asleep.
Your hormones may be playing a big part in your insomnia. It is
very important to determine if this is the root cause of your sleep
issues as this can easily be corrected. If you are not producing
adequate progesterone, the calming hormone that helps relieve irritability and anxiety, you may not sleep well. If your cortisol level,
the stimulating hormone that helps you respond to stress, is high in
the evening you may have trouble falling and staying asleep.

Is it dangerous to
take traditional
medicines and
natural medicines/
supplements at the
same time?
What should people watch for?
.................................................................................
By Brian Barkow, PharmD
www.naturespathways.com
Point: The marketed remedy or supplement may behave similarly to the prescription medication.
Many prescription drugs have their
origins from plants and elements found in
nature. Warfarin, a very potent vitamin-K
antagonist (fancy word for slowing down
your blood from clotting), was discovered
in fermented sweet clover. Lovastatin,
a cholesterol lowering medication, was
discovered from Monascus purpureus
(also known as red yeast rice). Digoxin,
an anti-arrhythmic used to control heart
rate, came from digitalis (also known as
foxgloves). Aspirin, a common but potent
anti-platelet (stops platelets from binding),
anti-pyritic (brings down fever), analgesic
(brings down pain) and anti-inflammatory drug, was discovered in the bark and
leaves of the willow tree.
The remedy or supplement you are
interested in taking may have properties
similar to a prescription medication. If this
were the case, it would increase the overall
effect, which could be dangerous.

Fish oil
supplementation
..................................................................................
By John Sowinski, R.Ph.
once went to a seminar where the speaker said that we now have
a test to determine who should be taking a fish oil supplement.
Here is the simple test: Take your non-dominant hand and place
it in front of you, palm up. Take 2 fingers from your other hand and
put it on your wrist. If you can feel a pulse, you should be taking
a fish oil supplement. The choice of fish oil supplement and how
much you take is very important and can be very confusing.
The health benefits of fish oil are many. These include its ability
to aid in the treatment of various heart diseases, high cholesterol, depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD), a weakened immune system, cancer, diabetes, inflammation, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Alzheimers
disease, eye disorders, macular degeneration and ulcers. It also
helps aid weight loss, healthy pregnancy, fertility and skin care
(particularly for conditions such as psoriasis and acne).
Fish oils contain fatty acids that are essential for your health.
Essential has dual meaning. Essential has the obvious meaning
of that it is needed, but in the health sense something is essential when you need to ingest it or your body doesnt make it. For
example, protein is made up of 20 amino acids. They are all essential in that you need these amino acids to make protein. However,
10 of those amino acids are essential in another way and that is
you must ingest them in your food. The other 10 amino acids you
can synthesize/make. You have to ingest these fatty acids as you
cant make them yourself.
When looking at fish oil supplements it is important that contaminants have been removed from the fish oil. Heavy metals such as
lead and mercury are in our oceans naturally as well as a pollutant.
Since this is the fishs environment, they are likely to ingest these
contaminants so they need to be removed. The process to remove
these contaminants is called molecular distillation. When choosing
a product look for a statement that declares that contaminants have
been removed or the words molecular distilled.

The best
investment is
in
yourself!
......................................................................
By Martin Rooney
The greatest gift that you were given in life was given to you for
free and that may be why most people dont value it. Heres an
article by Training For Warriors creator Martin Rooney that brings
the message home perfectly. This might be something you want to
share with your clients, too.
hen you were born, you were given the greatest gift in
the cosmos. You were given a life of time. Most people,
however, dont value their time. Perhaps this is because
this great gift was given to us for free. Think you are smart enough
to avoid spending your time? Maybe not.
In fact, many people spend huge amounts of their time each day
without any return on investment. When you spend your time in
front of the TV, searching aimlessly on the Internet, eating the
wrong food or hanging out with the wrong people, you are spending time with no real hope of a positive return.
The short-term return of a cheap laugh, sugar rush, or extra
pound of fat may feel good at the time, but is worthless for a
trainer (or anyone for that matter) in the long term. A successful
life is not created when you simply spend time. Success happens
when you invest your time.
No matter who you are or where you are from, you have something in common with everyone else: you were given 24 hours today,
and the clock is ticking. In your time budget, you are given 24 hours
in a day. Today you, like everyone else, will get 24 hours. What you
do with each 24-hour day added up over your lifetime will determine
your future. If you really understand that, then every hour, minute
and every second becomes valuable. In fact, time is more valuable
than money because you can always get more money, but once your
18
time is gone, you cannot have it back. When you invest money, you
should expect a return. The same should be true for your time. The
great news? Investing in your self doesnt need to be a huge lifestyle
overhaul in just a few days or weeks. What counts is gradual progress
with a clear goal in mind of appreciating self-optimization.
Here is my list of 5 things you can do to make sure youre
actively protecting your most important investment:
Eat well
It sounds easy, but for many people, cleaning up ones diet can be a
challenge when confronted with habits, traditions and peer pressures. Going back to our car example, think of it this way: if you
want your car to last as long as possible and run smoothly and efficiently, the clear choice is premium-grade gasoline. Similarly, if
you want your body and health to be at the highest level of performance, only feed yourself premium fuel in natural, whole forms.
Sleep
Many people these days are concerned with working out more,
multitasking, and trying too hard to do too much. While keeping
busy is not inherently bad, not getting sufficient rest to recover is.
You cant build muscle without rest time to digest it.
Read
and deeper the material, the more your mind will be stimulated by
its content and the more youll learn and grow.
Exercise
Yours in strength,
Martin Rooney

calories you will burn. By sinking deeper into a pose, you will put
more demand on the large muscle groups, which will burn more
calories. The ultimate number of calories burned in a yoga class
depends on many factors including your age, height, weight and
gender.
However, the best part of yoga is what you get out of it that
cant be measured in calories, pounds or minutes. Yoga allows
you to connect your body, mind and spirit so your time on the
mat becomes more than just a workout. Its the mindfulness that
comes with practicing yoga. Its the way you learn to listen to your
body. Yoga inspires you to want to take care of your body and
fuel it with healthier foods. There is not another workout that will
improve you physically, mentally and spiritually the way yoga
does. You leave a yoga class just plain feeling good.
If you are concerned about starting yoga or increasing the
intensity of your yoga practice, please consult a qualified health
professional first.

accessible and seen are easier to find and put away. Develop a
storage system that works for your family. Labeling bins with
words (or pictures for children who cant yet read) helps children
identify where things belong. Find a system that will have longterm functionality and grow with the family. Many stores sell
storage bookcases that blend with home dcor.
TAME THE TOYS. Making too many items available at any

and interesting. Toys out of the rotation can be stored in a basement or attic. Belongings that are not requested or missed can be
given away. Another idea is to create wishlists for birthdays and
holidays. This way friends and relatives only buy what kids want,
rather than an array of toys that may just end up taking up space.

fun instead of financing trips. The following are a handful of ways parents can trim
their families travel costs without sacrificing the quality of their vacations.
STAY CLOSER TO HOME. It may sound
considerable expense for families on vacation. Depending on the size of their families, parents may find that their dining
budgets will approach or even exceed the
cost of air travel by the end of a single
week. But parents can drastically reduce
those costs by planning to make some their
own meals while away on vacation. Bring
along a couple of cereal boxes so breakfast
is simple and inexpensive, and try to book
accommodations equipped with kitchens
or outdoor areas where the family can fire
up a grill a few times during the week to
save on costly dinner tabs.

blood stagnation (in other words, incredibly stuck energy). Applying tui na techniques that knead, grasp, and push the
tissue of the shoulder and neck, along with
holding acupressure points such that move
stuck energy, provide significant pain
relief. In addition to using tui na (Chinese
medical massage) techniques to begin to
balance the front and back of the neck and
shoulders and acupressure to move energy
that has become stuck as a result of poor
body positioning and mechanics (causing
pain), I work with my clients to help them
become more aware of their posture and
develop lifestyle practices that aim to
counteract and correct the imbalance.

GO IT
ALONE?
tep foot into any of the YMCA of the Fox Cities facilities and youll
quickly realize: Whatever your weight, fitness level, age or wellness
goals, the Y is the place for you.
But your local Y isnt going to rest on its laurels anytime soon. Just as
individuals need to push their own boundaries to get even better fitness
results, the Y recognizes changes are sometimes necessary to meet
members evolving needs. The organizations newly enhanced training
program is one more way the YMCA of the Fox Cities staff is showing their
dedication to helping everyone reach their wellness goals no matter
what those goals might be.
Eight-year Y member Margaret Burton knows this first-hand. Though
she had long been a fan of the organizations water and land aerobics
classes, she was searching for something new and flexible enough to fit
her changing schedule. In November 2012 she found it: the Ys personal
training program.
But it wasnt easy at first.
I was not an athletic kid; I have not been a particularly athletic adult.
When I started, I felt really unconfident about tackling any of the weight
machines or cardio machines, Burton admits. Its a feeling many Y members
share. The sheer number of fitness options at the Y can be overwhelming
and the personal training staff understands this. Thats why they dont
start their clients on treadmills or weight machines right away, but rather sit
down for an initial get-to-know-you wellness consultation and profile.
The first session, Rachel and I sat down for a good hour and we
talked about what I was feeling good about, and what I wasnt, Burton
explains. She was really good about just listening.
Rachel is Rachel Lenth, a nationally certified trainer at the Y who
motivates, coaches and inspires Burton and other members. Lenth has
a Bachelor of Science degree in health promotion and wellness exercise physiology from the University of WisconsinStevens Point. Lenth
says the consultation is important, but only the first step personal trainers take in understanding the members they work with. Building and
maintaining trust between members and trainers is at the core of every
personal training relationship at the Y.
As a trainer you have to learn to read your client their body
language, how theyre feeling, how much theyre sweating because
every client is different; every client reacts differently to certain activities and encouragement, Lenth explains. Members best interests are
always at the forefront of the trainers minds, and that helps makes the
member-trainer connection a true relationship, rather than an obligation. Both Burton and Lenth, for example, look forward to seeing each
other and working on Burtons goals.
Healthy changes
both big and small
Lenth and Burtons hard work and partnership continue to pay off.
What kind of got me hooked was [Lenth] was able to assess what
I could do, give me things that I could be successful doing, and then
just start raising the bar a little bit and sometimes you dont even
realize its happening until you look in the mirror and, Hey! My clothes
are fitting better. This looks good on me again! A real breakthrough for
me was when my husband started noticing, Burton laughs.
Lenth and Schalk explain that little successes are key
in helping members stick with their long-term goals.
Trainers also make sure to help members celebrate those successes.
But the most rewarding part of personal
training for Burton? Strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, posture: All of
those things have gotten better. But Id
say the No. 1 thing thats gotten better
in my case is my confidence.
Theres no telling what the future
holds for Burton, but one things for
sure: The YMCA of the Fox Cities will
certainly be involved.

What is
dyspareunia?
.................................................................
By Michelle Landsverk
First and foremost, you need to tell your doctor about it, in order
to make sure that no disease process or hormone issue is the
problem. Your doctor will perform a few tests in order to make
sure that you dont need medical treatment. And when your
health checks out, your doctor will probably refer you to physical
therapy, but if they dont, it doesnt hurt to inquire about it.
The reason is rather simple: our pelvic floor has muscles in it,
just like any other region in our body. If you dont have something that can be treated medically, then chances are, the problem
lies within the pelvic floor musculature. The medical professional
best equipped to help you rehabilitate an injured or dysfunctional
muscle is a physical therapist.
www.naturespathways.com
There are plenty of women out there who experience pain with
vaginal penetration, and they think if they just relax itll go away
only to feel extreme disappointment when sex hurts, again and again.
And there is a vicious circle accompanying the problem, whereby the
muscles of the pelvic floor tense up simply by anticipating the pain.
This very real mind and body connection will lead to pain every time
one tries to stretch an already tight muscle. The pelvic floor is meant
to stretch, and when you think about it, you realize the functions of
the pelvic floor muscles include allowing for intercourse and childbirth without catastrophic consequences, for example.
We do, in fact, have conscious control over most of the muscles
in our body (except for muscles in the organs, like the heart
muscle for example). But its easier said than done. One potential
reason is that the muscle is in a state of chronic spasm, meaning,
its not going to relax simply because you want it to. The cycle of
spasm needs to be broken. And this is definitely possible.

Gaming Up
Support for
Trenton
........................................................
By Kathi Bloy
42
www.naturespathways.com
Her aunt, Chris Quaintance, knew about Community Benefit Tree (CBT), a
nonprofit dedicated to help
families through the financial
burdens of medical crises.
Having been part of a team to
help support a friend whose
son was hurt in a bad car accident, she suggested a Celebration of Support, assisted
by CBT, to raise funds for
Trentons medical and living
expenses.
Planned for May 2 from
3 to 8 p.m., the Celebration,
called Gaming Up Support for Trenton with his grandfather.
Trenton, will be held at Bean
City Bar and Grill outside New
London, where Trenton grew up. There will be games with prizes,
according to Quaintance, as well as the standard silent and live
auctions. Well also have a DJ and food, she said.
Community Benefit Tree is a great place to start, Quaintance
said. They really do a lot and put their heart and soul into helping
people who need the help. CBT did an amazing job helping us set
it all up and keeping us on track and keeping everything moving
forward.
Her daughter, Jessica and Trentons cousin, is also a member of
the Celebration team, as are other cousins and family members.
We have lots of close friends helping out, Quaintance said.
There are many, many volunteers, some of them family and
others provided by CBT.
Trenton recently had a CT scan that doctors said showed no
sign of pneumonia. He started a job at Hertz Rent-A-Car about
four weeks ago, renting cars to travelers at the Oshkosh airport,
delivering cars and, when the location is short-staffed, cleaning
vehicles.
A student in the AODA program at Fox Valley Technical
College, he had to miss the spring semester. But, Jaeger said
Trenton will definitely return to school in September and may
take some summer classes as well.
Quaintance added, Trenton is a pretty caring kid. He wants to
be able to reach people and help them.
Readers who are unable to attend Trentons celebration can
make a tax-deductible donation online at http://communitybenefittree.org/gaming-up-support-for-trenton-cos-event.html. For
more information, call the organization at 920-422-1919.
The Community Benefit Tree Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization governed
by Christian values. Our mission is to help individuals and families struggling
with a medical crisis financially, emotionally, spiritually and with practical
resources. We celebrate peoples lives and support by helping family, friends or
co-workers plan a Celebration of Support event for their loved one. In the last 10
years, these one-day events have helped more than 500 families with funds for
living and medical expenses. Community Benefit Tree also provides education,
support, resources and financial assistance for families. For more information,

Serving: S. Outagamie,
Winnebago & NW Calumet
Counties since 1982
Ive used carpet cleaning services in the past but they always
seemed like such a hassle. Not only would we have to move all our
furniture, our carpets stayed wet for days. Thats simply not the
case with Chem-Dry.
Thanks to their unique equipment as well as cleaning process and
products, no water reaches the carpet pad (where it can lead to mold
and mildew). Plus they use only a fraction of the water a typical steam
cleaning service would use. Our carpet was dry to the touch within
two hours and it was great knowing I wasnt wasting a ton of water.
So how does it work? Carbonation! Chem-Drys cleaning solution is heated to 200 degrees and applied with a special buffing
vacuum. The carbonated solutions bursting bubbles bring dirt
and other nasty things up to the top of the carpet, where theyre
suctioned up and away.
Chem-Dry uses a unique product called The Natural, which is
made up of natural, nontoxic, safe ingredients like plant extracts.
Its green-certified and great for kids and people with allergies or
asthma. It is great to know that I can crawl around on the carpet
with my baby niece and not have to worry about any harsh chemicals affecting either of us.
YOU

Wonderful results
To say I was impressed with Randall and Chem-Dry is an understatement. Im absolutely thrilled with my carpet and the experience I had. Im no longer sneezing through the night, and the
stains on my carpet are gone and have yet to return.
Not only have I recommended Chem-Dry to my friends and
family, I will be scheduling my next cleaning with Chem-Dry
right away. In addition to cleaning and protecting carpets, ChemDry also offers upholstery, rug, tile, grout and stone cleaning, as
well as other great services like pet urine odor treatment, specialty
stain cleaning and leather care.
An extra incentive that makes trusting in Chem-Dry even
better? When I refer a friend to them, I and that friend both earn
$20 toward a cleaning.
So if youre looking for an environmentally friendly clean for
your home in spring or any other season, contact Chem-Dry
today; tell them Jane sent you!

Weight loss
and blood
sugar control
is as easy
as
1, 2, 3
.........................................
By Grandma Rose
f you want to lose weight and get your blood sugar under
control, an eating plan that is very low in carbohydrates will
do the trick. The lower the carbohydrate content of the food
you eat each day, the lower your blood sugar will be and the more
quickly you will lose weight.
This is the list of carbohydrate foods in descending order.
Number one will have the highest carbohydrate effect and it goes
down from there.
1. Sugar of all forms, including honey and maple syrup and
anything made with sugar
2. Flour and anything made with flour
3. Starchy foods, including potatoes and rice
4. Bananas, pineapple, watermelon, grapes
5. Other melons
6. Apples, pears and peaches, oranges, grapefruit (fruit juice
is like sugar)
7. Dry beans of all kinds
8. Yogurt and milk the lower the fat content, the higher
the carbohydrate count.
9. Vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, green beans, spinach, kale,
lettuce and berries
10. Protein, meat, eggs and cheese
Fat and fiber have no carbohydrates and do not affect blood sugar.
Eating fat and fiber with carbohydrates will slow the digestion
of the carbohydrates and lessen their effect on blood sugar and
weight.
To get blood sugar under control and lose weight, simply turn
the above list upside down. Eat Nos. 10, 9, 8, 7 and 6, and have a
little from Nos. 5 and 4. You will be well-nourished and feel great
as your blood sugar will go down your weight too!
www.naturespathways.com
You dont need to eat any foods from Nos. 3, 2 or 1 to be wellnourished. Buy large containers of plain yogurt and sweeten with
Splenda or Stevia. Add your own fruit. Small containers of yogurt
have added sugar. Use fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. Do
not juice vegetables as fiber is removed and the juice is higher in
carbohydrates. Processed foods contain added sugar and starches.
With these simple rules you should not be hungry, have to count
carbs or calories to lower blood sugar and weight.
Adding Hi-Maize 260 to the foods you eat will help make you
feel full, burn fat, lower cholesterol and help keep blood sugar
under control.
Grandma Rose can help you if you attend her free classes the first
and third Saturday of every month at 2 p.m. Classes are free and
registration is not necessary. No purchase is necessary. Classes are

Goldenseal
Hydrastis canadensis
Few studies have been published on goldenseals safety and effectiveness, and there is little scientific evidence to support using it
for any health problem.
Clinical studies on a compound found in goldenseal, berberine,
suggest that the compound may be beneficial for certain infections
such as those that cause some types of diarrhea, as well as some
eye infections. However, goldenseal preparations contain only a
small amount of berberine, so it is difficult to extend the evidence
about the effectiveness of berberine to goldenseal.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health
(NCCIH) is funding research on goldenseal, including studies
of antibacterial mechanisms and potential cholesterol-lowering
effects. NCCIH is also funding development of research-grade
goldenseal, to facilitate clinical studies.
