Tutorial-2
1. A three-phase three-wire transmission system (Fig. 1)
has its conductors situated at the vertices of a triangle of
sides 4, 6 and 9 meters, each conductor having a radius
of 1cm. Assuming line to be completely transposed and
carrying balanced load current, calculate the line
inductance per phase per km.
(Ans: 1.33 mH/phase/km)

Fig. 1

2. If the radius of single strand in a 7-strand ACSR conductor is r. Find the equivalent radius
conductor (GMR or self GMD).
(Ans: 2.176r)

3. A 500 kV line has a bundling arrangement of two conductors per phase as shown in Fig.
2. Compute the reactance per phase of this line at 50 Hz. Each conductor carries half of
the total phase current. Assume that the line is transposed.
(Ans: 0.346 /km)

4. An overhead line 50 km in length is to be constructed of conductors 2.56 cm in diameter,

for single phase transmission. The line reactance must not exceed 31.4 ohms. Find the
maximum permissible spacing.
(Ans: 1.48 m)

5. The six conductors of a double-circuit three-phase line

having an overall radius of 0.865E-2 m are arranged as
shown in Fig. 3. Find the capacitive reactance (in km)
to neutral and charging current per km per conductor at
110 kV, 50 Hz.
(Ans: 176056 km, 0.1805 A/km)

6. Calculate the capacitive reactance in km of a bundled 60 Hz three-phase line having

three ACSR Rail conductors per bundle with 45 cm between conductors of the bundle.
The spacing between bundle centres is 9, 9 and 18m.
(Ans:208205 km)

7. Determine the capacitance of arrangement shown in Fig. 4 when (a) the effect of earth is
neglected and (b) the effect of earth is considered if the heights of conductors from
ground are 10 meters. Radius of the conductors is 2cm.
(Ans: (a)10.04 pF/m/phase (b)19.94 pF/m/phase)

8. Calculate the performance of a 10 km long, three-phase transmission line delivering

2500kVA at 0.8 p.f. lagging. The voltage at the sending-end being 33 kV, 50 Hz and
R=0.531 /km and L =1.76 mH/km.
(Ans: Regulation=1.78%, Efficiency=98.46%)

9. A three-phase overhead line 200 km long has resistance=0.16 /km and conductor
diameter of 2 cm with spacing 4 m, 5 m and 6m transposed. Find:
a. The ABCD Constants
b. The Vs, Is, pfs, Ps when the line is delivering full load of 50 MW at 132 kV and 0.8
lagging p.f.
c. Efficiency of transmission and receiving-end voltage regulation of transmission line.
(Ans: (a)A=0.978<0.50, B=86.4<68.60, C=0.00056<90.20, D=0.978<0.50 (b) Vs=165.44kV, Is=0.244<28.30 kA, pfs=0.808 lagging, Ps= 56.49 MW (c) Efficiency=70.8%, Regulation=28.15% )

10. A 50 Hz, three-phase, 275 kV, 400 km transmission line has the following parameters
(per phase)
Resistance = 0.035 /km
Inductance = 1 mH/km
Capacitance = 0.01 F/km
If the line is supplied at 275 kV determine the MVA rating of a shunt reactor having
negligible losses that would be required to maintain 275 kV at the receiving-end, when
the line is delivering no-load. Use nominal- method.
(Ans: 47.56 MVAr)
