One distinctive style of music that emerged from the early 80's was glam or hair metal. It was called glam/hair metal because it included loud heavy guitar riffs, and members of hair metal bands styled themselves with big hair, and tight outfits, like the glam rock musicians of the 70's In 1981, the first music television channel, MTV, was launched on TV, and featured free music videos by record company. MTV became a new source of music entertainment and pop music and culture. Other genres of music that were prominent in the decade were rap and hip hop which consisted of lyrically complex content and beats, as well as pop music which generally had catchy lyrics and upbeat rhythms.
