A documentary film
depicting a journey that
includes Kabbala, heroin,
dance and redemption.
Over the course of a
decade, Yanai Jacob
filmed his dramatically
changing life as well as his
mothers. His mother,
Rebbetzin Feige, a
Holocaust survivor, who
returned to a religiously
observant way of life (a
chozeret btshuva),
married the Admor of
Ashlag, when she was 45
and he was 85 years old.
The Admor taught her the
secrets of Kabbala before
he passed away. Ever
since, Rebbetzin Feige has
been working to save the
world from the atomic
bomb by promulgating
Kabbala. She wanted her
son, Yanai Jacob, to grow
up to be the Messiah who
would help her save the
world, but at 14, he ran
away to the streets of Tel
Aviv and became a drug
addict. He finally ends up
as a filmmaker in
Jerusalem, telling his life
story through the film.
The program includes
screening of The Chaos
Within (Yanai Jacob Lein,
85 minutes, Israel, 2014);
and a discussion with film
researcher Yuval Rivlin,
the films director Yanai

Essays, as a literary genre,

receive much less
attention than they
deserve and this renders
the creators of Hebrew
essays largely on the
sidelines. The evening will
be dedicated to the work
of Shlomo Grodzensky, a
unique, gifted Israeli
essayist. Host Shimon
Zandbank, translator,
researcher and essayist,
will discuss Grodzensky and
the role his work plays in
Israeli culture.

The philosophy of the

Zionist movement in the
early twentieth century
was influenced by Jewish
culture as well as by
surrounding cultures. New
Jewish approaches
thereby developed
alongside disagreements
of the movements goals
and values.
At each session in this
series we will introduce
two Zionist thinkers
holding differing views.
We will attempt to
understand, with the
wisdom of hindsight, what
the core of their argument
was, how they expressed
their thinking in their
writings and works, and
what they have in common
with present-day Israeli
reality.

The All-together Man

and The Man of Majesty
Berl and Jabotinsky
The values of Zeev
Jabotinsky and Berl
Katznelson contain
opposing visions: At the
center of Jabotinskys
Zionist vision stands the
military-political war,
whereas Katznelson
focused on agricultural,
social, and cultural
endeavors. What is the
vision that comes through
in their letters - and what
can we learn from them
about ideological disputes
in contemporary Israel?
