Introduction to Vacuum Pumps

Vacuum pumps are designed to pump air or gases at pressures below atmospheric pressure. Working at
below atmospheric pressure facilitates many tasks and research activities in laboratories. These range
from simple filtration to complex distillation and many others.

Vane Pump
Due to their high flow, deep vacuum capability oil-sealed rotary vane pumps have traditionally been very
popular in laboratories as they are capable of handling most pumping requirements. However, due to the
fact that vapour will condense in the pump, careful selection of traps, accessories and diligent
maintenance is required to ensure trouble-free use.
Not all tasks or experiments within the laboratory need high flow and deep vacuum and there are
alternative pumping technologies that may be more suitable. Please talk to our Technical Office on

Oil sealed rotary vane pumps

Best suited to applications that require high flow rates and pressures below 1 mbar. Traps and accessories
are always required. Talk to our Technical Office if you require assistance.
Diaphragm pumps
Ilmvac Diaphragm Pump
These are oil-free pumping mechanisms available in two forms, one for pumping air and one for
pumping chemicals. A typical use of a chemical version would be for rotary evaporation.
Piston pumps
These are oil-free pumping mechanisms that generally have a higher compression ratio than diaphragm
pumps, and provide good flow characteristic when used in such applications as filtration, cell harvesting
and vacuum oven drying. Not suitable where aggressive vapours or solvents are involved.
Scroll pumps
A sophisticated oil-free design that gives high flow rates and deep vacuum of the same order as rotary
vane pumps. Your application may require the use of a chemical trap.

1. Select appropriate approximate vacuum for the application
2. Is chemical resistance required (yes or no)?
3. Select flow rate if appropriate. Approx flow rate should be 12 times the volume to be
evacuated (litres per min) except for filtration, where there the system is not gas tight, use x4.
Examples: a. Rotary evaporation of 5L flask plus condenser plus tubing (probable 12L in total),
therefore =12x2=24L/min pump flow rate:
b. Vacuum oven of 50L capacity 50x2=100 L/min pump flow rate:
c. Filtration of 4x1L flasks on manifold plus tubing (probable 5L in total), therefore
5x4=20L/min pump flow rate.

Bigger is not better as too large a vacuum pump tends to increase the likelihood of condensable vapours bypassing
the cold trap and migrating into vacuum pump oil. For instance, a -55C system condenser will not condense out
Acetonitrile vapour causing vapour to condense in oil.

The new BIOVAC 102 is a portable vacuum aspiration system with integrated, chemically resistant,
diaphragm pump that is ideally suited for the safe aspiration of biological supernatants as well as
remnants of chemical or medical experiments. All elements of the liquid pathway are chemically inert,
allowing a wide range of reagents to be used and for sterilisation by Virkon.
It is easy to remove small amounts of excess liquids from object slides, petri dishes, well plates etc,
through various kinds of pipettes which are inserted into the pipette carrier of the hand piece. The large
integrated catch pot is isolated automatically, as soon as the maximum filling level is reached.
Between the catch pot and the pump, there is a filter holder in which diaphragm filters of up to
0.22 m can be inserted allowing bacteria and viruses to be handled safely. The catch pot and the
diaphragm pump are connected via fast locking couplings with integral bi-directional isolation valve.
The chemically resistant diaphragm pump employed in the BIOVAC has a long life (10,000 running
hours) and can be operated by means of a foot switch.

UNIJET II and UNIJET IV Refrigerated Aspirator Pumps

The UNIJET II and IV pumps are designed for absorbing larger quantities of solvents, especially in
combination with rotary evaporators. They have a built-in cooling system to chill the water bath and to
eliminate normal heat-up caused by pump operation. Cold water has a high capacity to absorb aerosols
which are released by the samples. The vacuum that is generated depends on the temperature of the water:
The lower the temperature, the higher the vacuum; at +4C a vacuum pressure of ca. 4mbar is attainable.
The UNIJET II and IV aspirator pumps have a bath volume of 10 litres and are available with vacuum
pressure control and 4 jet pumps (UNIJET IV) or without vacuum pressure control and 2 jet pumps (UNIJET
II). Both models feature Fuzzy Logic functionality.

The Welch Rietschle Thomas GelMaster is a patented vacuum system with room
temperature vapour trap and vacuum system integrated into a single, high-efficiency,
low-maintenance unit.
The vapour trap reduces the overall vapour load enabling a compact, high-efficiency
diaphragm pump to be the primary vacuum force.
Trapped fluids accumulate in the collector over 10 to 15 gel drying runs (and it is just
as efficient on the last run as on the first). When the fluid reaches the red zone in the
fluid-level sight glass, simply open a valve and drain the collected fluid. The system is
then ready to dry more gels. The trapping fluid can then be re-used over and over
again, since it does not mix with the condensate.
The diaphragm pump delivers a powerful, non-fluctuating vacuum for fast,
smooth drying.

The glass inlet separator helps protect the pump from ingesting liquids or particles. The gas ballast or
vent switch acts to minimise vapour condensation when pumping heavy vapour loads. Vacuum

Any particles, water or condensed vapour that may have been ingested into the pump are purged when
it is shut off. The self-cleaning purge automatically turns on for 2 minutes after turning off the pump. An

The RV series pumps are unique in their capability to deliver high or low throughputs with high ultimate
vacuum, which combined with ultra-low noise levels makes them ideal for a wide range of applications
and environments. They also feature a fast acting inlet valve to seal the pump for suck-back protection.
The pumps are easy to install, use and maintain. All the controls are clearly marked and have large finger
grips for ease of use. Inlet and outlet are both fitted with standard NW25 flanges. Supplied with 1 litre
of Ultragrade 19 oil. Power cord is required but not included with the pumps. For Health and Safety
requirements an oil mist filter is required (see below).

XDS and XDS-C Dry Vacuum Scroll Pumps

Completely dry, lubricant-free vacuum pumps with vapour handling. The innovative XDS and XDS-C dry
pumps were designed by BOC Edwards to provide vacuum totally free of lubricants. Bearings are isolated
from the vacuum environment by a patented bearing shield. Uniquely, by using a scroll mechanism there
are no bearings, bearing purges, grease or oil under vacuum. Controllable gas ballast is standard and
makes the XDS and XDS-C suitable for pumping condensed vapours.
These pumps are portable, air-cooled and cost effective. Power consumption is very low and, typically,
no other utilities are required. Low vibration and noise levels make them ideal for laboratory use. The
XDS pumps are not supplied with a power cord.
A carefully selected and tested combination of chemically resistant materials makes the XDS-C series ideal
for a wide range of laboratory wet chemistry applications.

KNFs innovative Laboport Self Drying Diaphragm Vacuum Pumps are ideal for applications where
saturated vapours are being evacuated. This usually causes liquids to collect in the pump, as encountered
with vacuum ovens, rotary evaporators and gel dryers. Unless removed from the pump they increase
processing time and reduce efficiency and pump life. The Laboport Self Drying Pumps cycle every few
minutes, removing accumulated moisture instantly without disturbing the vacuum process.
The unique self-drying process removes accumulated condensate from the pump and restores efficiency
whilst the pump is operating. During the cycle the drying system solenoid opens, permitting air to enter
the evacuated pump head. As a result of the increase in pressure in the pump head, the inlet valve of the
first stage pump head closes, thus preserving the vacuum level within the evacuated chamber. By
contrast, the outlet valve, and both valves of the second stage pump head, open automatically causing
condensation to be expelled at high speed. The solenoid valve closes again and the pump now evacuates
the chamber at full capacity. The drying operation is precisely controlled by an adjustable electronic timer,
and set as required.

Two basic versions are available:
Standard version
The materials of the wetted parts are made of aluminium, FPM (e.g. Viton) and polyamide. This is
adequate for less aggressive gases and vapours.
Chemistry version
All wetted parts of the chemistry version are made of chemically resistant fluorinated plastic materials, e.g.
PTFE-sandwich diaphragms or ECTFE (e.g., Halar) clamping discs with stainless steel core. This makes the
Chemistry version ideal for rotary evaporation, distillation, vacuum concentration, gel drying etc.
Vacuubrand diaphragm pumps offer high flow rates at low vacuum, excellent reliability and vacuum
stability. They are inexpensive and simple to service and maintain. All units are supplied with on/off
switch, mains cable with plug and instructions. The Chemistry versions are also supplied with gas ballast.

The latest solutions for solvent handling in the laboratory, LVS units are based on the MPC range of
chemically resistant diaphragm pumps with solvent containment condensers. They are available with or
without control. There are four control options available:
None: The vacuum level is not controlled.
Standard Valve: The vacuum pump operates continuously and the process vacuum level is controlled
by a chemically resistant solenoid valve. Set points can be preset, altered during the process, or
determined automatically using the boiling point finding facility.
Management: The pump starts and stops automatically to maintain vacuum within your set range.
Ideal for operating vacuum lines and networks where service intervals are greatly extended.
Ecoflex: The pumps flow rate is automatically varied to maintain the set point by matching the vapour
load. Set points can be preset, altered during the process, or determined automatically using the boiling
point finding facility. Ideal for rotary evaporators, where process times can be reduced by up to 30%.
Service intervals are greatly extended. VCZ324 controller included.

These innovative double stage rotary vane pumps are suitable for all applications in the rough and
medium vacuum range, featuring pumping speeds of 80 to 160L/min. The drive concept integrated

The Heidolph range includes 6 drives, 4 peristaltic pump heads and 3 multi-channel pump heads.
Peristaltic pump drives are available with and without serial and analogue interfaces. They are ideal for
aggressive, abrasive or corrosive solvents and sterilised media. Flow rates from 0.3ml up to 3,644ml per
minute are available (H20), as are double pump head systems.

These peristaltic pump drives are suitable for standard applications; they have electronic speed control
(accuracy 2%), large dials for speed setting, protection to IP30 and can be stacked (up to 3 pump
drives). Flow can be clockwise or counter clockwise.
The PD 5001 provides flow rates from 0.7 to 729ml per minute with a speed range of 10 to 120rpm. It
can also be equipped with two pumps heads (SP quick and SP quick d) or with a multi-channel pump
head (C4, C8 or C12 - an adaptor is required but not supplied). Multi-channel flow rates are from 0.01
to 336ml/min.
Model PD 5006 provides flow rates from 3.3 to 3,644ml per minute with a speed range of 50 to 600rpm.
It is suitable for any of the single pumps heads, however it is not suitable for the use of multi-channel
pump heads.

These models are designed for more demanding applications. Both pump drives have an analogue
interface for speed range setting, direction of rotation and start/stop function. They have electronic
speed control (accuracy 0.5%), large dials for speed setting, protection to IP55 and can be stacked (up
to 3 pump drives). Flow can be clockwise or counter clockwise and the filling and emptying of tubing can
be accelerated by a push-button.

Multi-Channel Peristaltic Pump Heads

There is a choice of three multi-channel pump heads which accept 4, 8 or 12 cassettes. The feed rate of
each channel can be adjusted by using different tubing dimensions. Tubing is available in a variety of
materials and sizes and can be changed easily. Other features include 4 or 8 rollers for minimal pulsation
and cassettes may be changed during operation. Cassettes must be ordered separately.
