Scope/Field of application

This document specifies a set of requirements for an ATU-R supporting different

ADSL modes (e.g. ADSL2+). The specification aims to detail the basic
connectivity requirements at the physical, ADSL, ATM and Ethernet level.
This document specifies the requirements for an ATU-R using multi-protocol
encapsulation of bridge protocols over ATM over ADSL over PSTN.
All requirements in this specification assume that the ATU-R is configured in
bridge mode. This does not prohibit the inclusion of additional functionality into
the ATU-R, e.g. router or WLAN functionality.
The objective is to ensure full interoperability between equipment from different
vendors. ATU-C and ATU-R from different vendors with different hardware chips
shall be fully interoperable with each other.

CPE 3001

Nokia D50 interoperability

The ATU-R shall be interoperable with Nokia D50e type of
DSLAM, with following line cards: eDMT8A3s, eDMT4f,

Network Provider domain

This document specifies two types of functionality for the ATU-R:
-

Functionality related to the ATU-R and its interaction with the DSLAM,
1) in figure 1.

Functionality related to the interaction between ATU-R and Access

Routers (AR) or other network elements e.g. gateways. The bridged
Ethernet ATU-R is depicted as 2) in figure 1.

In figure 1, only a single customer interface is depicted. Some ATU-R may

however support additional customer interfaces as stated in specific requirements
Usually a POTS splitter is also needed. Requirements for the splitter are found
in [13].

Figure 2 ADSL system reference configuration

Reference configuration: The equipment stationed at the customer premises

consists of a POTS splitter and a modem designated ATU-R. The ATU-R
could be stand-alone equipment or be a part of the Data Terminal Equipment
(DTE). The DTE could e.g. be a PC or local area equipment such as a router.
The local exchange (LE) equipment contains the ATU-C and a splitter. The ATU-C
is the counterpart to the ATU-R. The LE equipment is often called DSLAM.
ATU-R: The term ATU-R is used when describing CPE functionality and performance.
ETSI FB: Line impairment type. Details can be found in Broadband Forum TR067 [14] or in ETSI TS 101 388 [10].
ETSI Loop #1: Cable type. Details can be found in the ETSI TS 101 388 [10] or in
the ITU-T Rec. G.996.1 [7].
ETSI Loop #2: Cable type. Details can be found in the ETSI TS 101 388 [10] or in
the ITU-T Rec. G.996.1 [7].
Sync Time: Sync Time is the time interval from the moment when the modem
starts Training, until the moment Showtime is achieved.
Showtime: The state reached after Training is completed and data can be transmitted.

Ordinances, electrical safety
For compliance with the Low Voltage Directive, 73/23/EEC
the following ordinances apply. The directive is mandatory for
almost all electrical equipment for use at voltage ranges 501000 V AC or 75-1500 V DC. For equipment used in Sweden
the voltage ranges are 0-1000 V AC and 0-1500 V DC.
1) Ordinance concerning Electrical Equipment; (SFS

Standards
Electrical safety, SS-EN 60 950
For mains and battery powered IT equipment connected to
a telecommunications network the requirements stated in
SS-EN 60 950 apply.
The standard, in accordance with the principles of safety
given in its introduction, covers safety requirements and
compliance criteria such as:
1. Protection of equipment users from hazards in the equipment.
2. Protection of service personnel working with the telecommunication network and other users of the telecommunication
network, from hazardous conditions on the telecommunication
network resulting from the connection of the equipment.
3. Protection of equipment users from voltages in the
telecommunication network.
NOTE. In the standards there are essential requirements,
which are legal and therefore mandatory.

The ATM scheduling on the uplink shall at least be able to
take place with strict priority.
ATM shaping per PVC
ATM shaping shall be supported per PVC.

CPE 3057

Shaping of CBR traffic

It shall be possible to shape CBR traffic to a specific peak
rate.

CPE 3058

Overbooking
The uplink shall support capacity being overbooked. This
includes the case that CBR traffic is part of the uplink.

Requirements at the Ethernet ports of the DSL

modems
Port type
The Ethernet port on the CPE shall be possible to
individually configure as untagged or tagged.
IP Precedence / DSCP
The CPE shall support mapping of both tagged and untagged
Ethernet frames to ATM PVC based on the IP precedence
and/or DSCP values in the IP header. The mapping between
IP precedence, DSCP and PVC shall be configurable. The
CPE shall support mapping of several IP precedence values
onto a single PVC.
Transparent forwarding of Ethernet frames on tagged
interfaces
The CPE shall be capable to transparently forward Ethernet
frames on tagged interfaces.

CPE 3062

Transparent forwarding of IP precedence, DSCP

The CPE shall be capable of transparently forwarding of IP
precedence, DSCP values.

CPE 3063

Support for Ethernet scheduling

The CPE shall support up to 4 Ethernet queues, with
Weigthed Fair Queuing (WFQ).

CPE 3064

Packet size on VLAN untagged interfaces

Ethernet frames up to 1518 bytes shall be possible to
forward over the WAN-interface.

CPE 3065

Packet size on VLAN tagged interfaces

Ethernet frames up to 1522 bytes shall be possible to
forward over the WAN-interface.

Performance requirements
Packet losses for real time (CBR)
No packet losses shall occur for Real Time traffic as long as
the traffic is below its configured rate, even if the sum of
Business Class and Real Time exceeds the line rate. This is
valid up to a sustained UBR rate equal to the DSL line rate
and for 100Mbit/s peak rates up to 64 Kbytes in total size for
all LAN interfaces together.
Delay for real time (CBR)
The maximum and average delay, discounting the
serialization delay, for real time traffic shall always be lower
than business class traffic as long as the class is not
overloaded.

Electrical safety
All requirements in this area are provided here for information
only. In the ordinances and standards referred to there are
essential requirements, which are mandatory from a legal
perspective.

6.7.1
CPE 3071

Ordinances concerning electrical equipment

Ordinances, electrical safety
For compliance with the Low Voltage Directive, 73/23/EEC
the following ordinances apply. The directive is mandatory for
almost all electrical equipment for use at voltage ranges 501000 V AC or 75-1500 V DC. For equipment used in Sweden
the voltage ranges are 0-1000 V AC and 0-1500 V DC.
1) Ordinance concerning Electrical Equipment; (SFS
1993:1068), in the Swedish Code of Statutes.
2) The National Electrical Safety Boards Regulations
concerning Certain Electrical Equipment; (ELSK-FS
2000:1).

CPE 3072

Equipment, which falls within the voltage ranges above,

shall comply with the requirements stated in the ordinances
and shall be accompanied by suppliers' declaration.
NOTE. In the Ordinances there are essential requirements,
which are legal and therefore mandatory.

6.7.2
CPE 3073

Standards
Electrical safety, SS-EN 60 950
For mains and battery powered IT equipment connected to
a telecommunications network the requirements stated in
SS-EN 60 950 apply.

given in its introduction, covers safety requirements and
compliance criteria such as:
1. Protection of equipment users from hazards in the equipment.
2. Protection of service personnel working with the telecommunication network and other users of the telecommunication
network, from hazardous conditions on the telecommunication
network resulting from the connection of the equipment.
