THEORY

:
A 3 point starter in simple words is a device that helps in the starting and running of ashunt
wound DC motor or compound wound DC motor. Now the question is why the setypes of DC
motors require the assistance of the starter in the first case. The only explanation to that is given
by the presence of back emf Eb, which plays a critical role in governing the operation of the
motor. The back emf, develops as the motor armature starts to rotate in presence of the magnetic
field, by generating action and counters the supply voltage. This also essentially means that the
back emf at the starting is zero, and develops gradually as the motor gathers speed.
6.0 PROCEDURE

a) Identify the terminal connections of the motor and operate the motor as shunt- wound
motor.
b) Read the nominal data of the motor based on the rating plate.
c) The motor to the starter has connected.

Be familiar with how the starter works.


Operate the motor with brake.
Subject the motor to a load.
Measure armature voltage and current.

7.0 DISCUSSION

In this lab session, we had no problems with for collecting nominal data because it just has
appear at screen and I just taking the data from the screen. For the set-up the diagram of DC
shunt- wound motor Connection and starting has no problem because we already learnt to
identity the component and the connection of the diagram. Besides that, the lecturer approve that
aver connection is correct and can proceed to other step is collecting. Opposite to record load
characteristic when we start taking the M/Nm we cannot start with 0.2 then we have to take the
measurement of 0.37 M/Nm. So the data is slightly wrong because of technical wrong. But, other
data is correct.

10.0 CONCLUSIONS

In the conclusion, I can conclude that I can set up the circuit diagram for DC shunt- wound
generator, separately excited Connection and Starting by my own. For set up a circuit diagram
first you have to recognize the each part component and then I have connected each one of
component following the circuit diagram. After that all connected, I have to take measurement
for each voltage and current. Based on data I got, I have to draw the graph to see the relationship
the torque loads between armature current and armature voltage under load. Finally, I can conclude that,
when the torque is higher it follows with the current is getting higher but the voltage is
constancy. It prove that, this is one of characteristic of DC shunt wound connection and
starting.
