Embroider The Faces As Follows: Turn under seam allowances of red noses and applique to
face. Turn just inside solid lines, baste nose on face using 3 strands of black floss. Sew nose to position
using outline stitch . Embroider sides and line of mouth in black outline stitch and center of mouth in red
satin stitch . Using 3 strands of black, embroider sleeping eyes in outline stitch and lashes in straight
stitches on both faces. Buttons (for eyes) are sewn over crosses after dolls have been stuffed.
To Stuff: Stuff arms and legs of dolls softly and head moderately firm. Eyes: sew flat shoe buttons
over each cross for eyes, taking stitches through from the back of head a thread at each corner of
sleeping eyes. Take the thread from the awake face to the asleep face and back to awake face on each
eye. This will indent both faces at the eye-line at the same time.
Wig: Use 4 ply, bright red knitting worsted for the hair. Each wig will take 24 yards each. Machine
stitch wool loops to wig foundation tape winding wool back and forth across the entire length of tape, to
make it thick. After stitching , clip all loops, sew tape of wig to position on top of head, covering center
seam of head.
To Make Dolls: Body & Shoes: Make darts in top of head. Sew black shoes to red and white striped
legs at line indicated, wrong sides together. Press shoes down over legs and baste bottom raw edges
together. Join at notches 1, join body in one continuous seam from notches 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10.
Leave free between circles for stuffing. Clip curves, turn right side out. Stuff legs softly and head moder-
ately firm.
View A: Suit & Hat: Join underarm seams of waist at notches 1. Join trousers at notches 4. Center
front and between circles on back at notches 3. Open trousers and join leg seams at notches 2. Turn
under hem allowance at bottom leg and hem. Join trousers to waist at notches 5. Join collar to collar
facing on un-notched edge. Trim seam and turn. Attach to neck with bias tape matching notches 6. Bind
entire back opening in a continuous piece of binding. Sew on snaps. Tie long piece of black ribbon in a
bow and tack it to the neck. Sew buttons at sides of trousers at fronts shown in illustration. Hat: Join
seam at notches 7. Join brim seams at notches 8. Fold on line indicated. Bring raw edges together,
press. Join to hat at notches 10 on inside as shown. Turn hat to right side; press brim up.
View B: Dress, Apron & Bloomers: For dress, finish sleeves at edges in a narrow hem. Sew 4”
elastic to line indicated on pattern, stretching as you sew .Sew embroidered edging to neck edge bias
tape. Sew underarm seams to waist. Gather upper edge of skirt and fit it to waist, sew back seam of
skirt. Sew skirt to waist at notches 3. Bind entire back opening in a continuous piece of binding. Sew on
snaps and turn up hem. Apron: Finish top, sides and bottom of apron in a small narrow hem. Fold straps
in half and stitch, leaving ends open. Turn and stitch to position shown on apron. Sew 8” piece of elastic
to line indicated on pattern stretching elastic as you sew. Snap sides of apron. Bloomers: Narrowly hem
bottoms of bloomers. Sew 4 1/2” pieces of elastic to lines indicated on pattern, stretching elastic as you
sew. Sew legs of bloomers at notches 2 and 3. Join to circle at 3. Open bloomers and sew legs. Make a
casing at top and insert an 8” piece of elastic through casing. Sew securely. Hem opening by hand.
