MOLD TO SEGMENT ALIGNMENT GAUGE

ST170

Measure the alignment of the mold to the first segment in slab

and billet casters reliably using the ST170 from Sequence
Technologies. Accurate results are obtained within seconds of
installing the light weight gauge in the mold during turnarounds
or scheduled repairs. Typically, measuring the transition is
time consuming and difficult generally performed by using a
straight bar and feeler gauges or other mechanical methods,
which can be unsafe and error prone. Sequence Technologies
has solved this by developing a rugged electronic instrument
suitable for the steel industry.

Measurement Principle
The ST170 uses a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) to accurately
measure the alignment between the mold passline and segment rolls. Data
from the sensor is displayed on a digital readout.

Measurement Head Assembly

The LVDT is mounted inside the
measurement head assembly on the
bottom of the gauge. A spring loaded
plunger with a hardened skid plate attaches
to the sensor and ensures constant contact
with the segment roll tangent.

The ST170 is a portable gauge used to verify proper

alignment of the mold to the first segment with
precise accuracy (0.001in). Misalignment can often
lead to product defects and increased mechanical
wear of the mold tube and roller bearings. Compared to other
alignment methods which may require the use of overhead
cranes and multiple technicians, the unique design of the
ST170 requires just one person to operate.
Two versions of the gauge are available, one to measure
alignment in slab casters and the other in billet/bloom casting
machines. On a slab mold, the alignment of both the back and
front broad faces (parallel to casting direction) can be
measured simply by rotating the gauge 180. When used in a
billet or bloom mold, the gauge is designed to accommodate
measurements of the side walls of the mold (perpendicular to
casting direction) as well.
Once securely positioned in the mold, a linear variable
differential transformer (LVDT) makes contact with the
segment roll and records its position relative to the mold
passline. The alignment is displayed on a digital readout so
the technician can quickly evaluate the results and make
mechanical adjustments if necessary.
