Tasting Note by Jonny McCormick

NOSE: A soft, classic sherry nose. It abounds with
damsons, Turkish raisins, and a dry, almond nuttiness.
PALATE: In the mouth, theres bountiful dark chocolate,
and espresso beneath ripe plums, apricot kernels and
intense orange oils.
WITH WATER: Watchful dilution emphasises the almond
and marzipan notes, developing the nose into a slightly
sweeter proposition. Simultaneously, it punctures that
perceptible alcohol strength on the neat dram.
COMMENT: Ultimately, this rich Speyside whisky perfectly
encapsulates Rosemary and Stephen Rankins particular
style of whisky, and only the fortunate ones who taste it
will have the opportunity to reflect on the glories in the
glass.

CASK: First fill Sherry Butt, transferred to a
Sherry Hogshead Cask No 69133 in 1969
6 9 B OT T L E S released for sale worldwide

A 62 Year Old Glenlivet initially matured in a first fill sherry

hogshead before being transferred to another first fill
hogshead in January 1969, selected by retired Managing
Director Ian Urquhart, his son Neil, Gordon & MacPhails
Director of Logistics and Facilities, and daughter Jenny
Houldsworth, who is a Non-Executive Director of the
company.

Tasting Note by Jonny McCormick

NOSE: Hints of fruitcake, dark chocolate, candied peel,
and light, subtle oak characteristics.
PALATE: Theres a ripe, rich fruity character of an older
orange that has matured from its zesty vitality, together
with rum and raisin chocolate.

WITH WATER: Chocolate orange soothes the palate,

eclipsing the fruitier notes at cask strength.
COMMENT: This whisky is one for the sophisticated
palate, those aficionados who can detect the nuances of
flavour, and appreciate the refinement. After more than
60 years of quiet maturation in the warehouse, it is hugely
pleasurable and delectably satisfying in small quantities.

The Whisky
A 63 Year Old Mortlach from the companys last cask
of 1951 Mortlach, selected by retired joint Managing
Director David Urquhart and his twin sons Stuart,
Gordon & MacPhails Whisky Supply Manager, and
Richard, Export Sales Executive.

NOSE: Its got all the classic Speyside characteristics of
rum and raisin, beeswax polish with an underlying rich
nuttiness to it.
PALATE: A soft opening with a slight delay until it
surprises you with a flourish of bitter orange, ripe banana,
clove oil, and charred oak ash.

WITH WATER: This would be one to experiment with

hesitantly, drop by drop. It draws out the fruits and a
fresh, garden peapod scent emerges
COMMENT: This is a great Friday night dram to
be sipped slowly beside a roaring fire. It yearns
for someone with enough time on their hands
to
fully
explore
its
extraordinary
character.

The Whisky
A 57 Year Old Strathisla, the oldest ever released,
selected by current Managing Director Michael Urquhart
and his daughter Laura Urquhart, Gordon & MacPhail
Brand Manager.

NOSE: Slight nuttiness, pecan, walnut, and theres subtle

smoke twisting around too. The fruit is solid and fresh:
black cherry, damson, cooking apple, and raisin.
PALATE: Soft and ethereal at first, then a tantalising
touch of bitterness, not too much, but complemented by
the fruit sweetness swelling around the sides.
WITH WATER: Cautiously, this finesses the sweetness and
fruit, but does not eliminate those weightier, chocolate
notes. They are boosted on the palate however, with
more coffee, chocolate and black fruits apparent, and the
loss of the bitterness.
COMMENT: Strathisla whisky has never been more
mature to offer a comparison, so this is utterly unique.
Suffice to say, this magnificent, beguiling beauty offers
all the dimensions and sophistication you would hope
for in a greatly matured malt whisky. It is a rare and
unforgettable experience.
