Engineer
According to The International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC), the
engineer is defined as the person appointed by the employer to act as the
engineer for the purposes of contract. It can be inferred from the definition that
the engineer is the employers agent. Based on a study done by Ab Samad
(2004), he defined that, engineer is a person who was trained in the design,
construction and works in various branches of engineering. In a short description,
the engineer works on behalf of the client to implement a technical project.
The engineer may work in the field of design, information technology (IT),
construction, manufacturing, robotic, advance materials or even the engineering
management technique for problem solving (Ab Samad, 2004). In fact, they may
also fill the management position for those who possess administrative and
communication skills in addition to their technical skill.
The need of engineering in economy, society and environment is probably
for problem solving alternatives for quicker, better and less expensive ways to
meet tough challenges. For instance, an environmental engineer quantifies the
particles flow of pollutants through soil to clean up abandoned industrial sites, oil
spills and other hazards. In addition, the needed of the engineer is to invent a
new technology to give ease to the society towards a better future.
Generally, the engineer had a broad spectrum of decisional power to
resolve most of day-to-day differences of opinion that frequently occur in
projects. The engineers are required to advice solutions and make it applicable
for the most of the problems which has no readily answers. In addition, the
responsibilities of the engineer are also assisting in planning, coordinating and
executing engineering projects. In fact, they have also worked with management
to develop project budgets and work in compliance with standard operating
procedures and policies.
In order to ensure they are well trained, they are required to be an expert
in a particular area of activity for which an advanced and extended formation is
necessary. Besides that, they must be practice in which requires a high level of
theoretical foundation. Engineers are usually allowed to attend seminars,
conferences and short course when necessary in enhancing their knowledge and
skills. Some employers provide funds for engineers to enrol in higher education
and training (Ab. Samad, 2004)
The engineer professions are considered as professional since they are
competent by virtue of his fundamental education and training to apply the
scientific method and outlook to the analysis and solution of engineering
problems. The work responsible is predominantly intellectual and requires the
exercise of original thought and judgement.
In a common context, professionalism is an acting in a professional
manner when carrying out duties and responsibilities of employment. In the
context of engineering, the professionalism is conducting the responsibility in
line with the guideline in code of professional and ethics of an engineer. For

example, the engineer has hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the
public. They also might perform services only in the areas of their competencies.
They may accept assignments and responsible to coordinate of an entire project

the entire project (National Society of Professional Engineers)
