Application period
15 March 14 April for the following winter semester
Applications are only accepted within the application period.
Only the date the application is received is decisive not the
postmark. In case the last day of the application deadline is
a Saturday, Sunday or a public holiday the application
deadline is extended to the next working day.
Duration of study and degree qualification
Standard period of study: 8 semesters
Degree: Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.)
Structure of the study course
The programme comprises 240 ECTS.
Detailed information about the study program and its
curriculum can be found in the study regulations
(Studienordnung), which are available in German only.
Language of instruction

Entrance requirements
General Higher Education Entrance Qualification
Musical/creative talent, technical ability
Sufficient knowledge of German
Documents to be submitted with applications
Completed application form (online)
Detailed CV in tabular form
Unauthenticated photocopy of the university entrance
qualification certificate or most recent school report (if
not available in German or English together with a
certified translation)
Foreign certificates must be officially recognised before
the application. In the near future foreign certificates will
be recognized by uni-assist. Detailed information (on
how to apply to uni-assist) will be published here soon.
Certificate from a medical specialist with an audiogram
(100 Hz 10 KHz)
transfer students from comparable programs:
documentation of courses completed and examinations
taken
Bank statement (for transfers from abroad, proof of
payment) documenting payment of 30 application fee.

This fee cant be refunded even if applicants withdraw


from the application process.

Proof of knowledge of German:
At the time of application: proof of linguistic ability
equivalent to level B1
At the time of matriculation: proof of linguistic ability
equivalent to level C1
Applicants from the Peoples Republic of China must
obtain a certificate from the Academic Evaluation Centre
www.aps.org.cn
Applications can be sent by post or handed in in person. Its
not possible to send applications by fax or email.
When applying for more than one programme applicants
have to fill in one separate application form for each
programme and send each form with the complete
documents separately.

Entrance examinations
Generally, these take place in mid-June to mid-July. The
entrance examination comprises the following sections:
Aural test (written paper, approx. 1 h)
musical dictate for single and several voices
Musical-technical hearing test (written paper, approx.
1.5h)
Listening to a piece of music/musical extracts that are
presented with mistakes, marking the mistakes in a
given text of notes; discussion of musical pieces
concerning style, genre, tone color, room perception,

balance, dynamic, intonation; comparative interpretation


of two different recordings of the same musical piece;
questions about general music theory, musical and
technical acoustics, organology
Harmony (written paper, approx. 1 h)
Composing a simple basso continuo; completing a
melody on 8, 12 or 16 bars; composing a second voice
for a given melody
A movement for four-voices of an augmented cadence,
with a given upper voice and diatonic functions or a
respective popular music example
Aural tests (oral, approx. 5 minutes)
Quick recognition of intervals and triads, dominant
seventh chords and its alterations
Repetition of a played short melody
Main instrument (approx. 10 minutes)
Presentation of two compositions of medium difficulty of
different styles
For main subject composition: instead of a presentation
on the main instrument, discussion of one of three of the
applicants own compositions. The compositions have to
be submitted three weeks ahead of the exam.
Piano (compulsory unless piano is the main instrument,
or composition is the main subject)
Presentation of a simple piece for piano
Sight-reading of a simple piano piece
Oral test (if necessary)

Applicants from other universities
Transfer students have to take part in the regular entrance
exam. Study periods and credits from previous studies can
be recognised if judged equivalent.
