The system

The electric monorail conveyor, an overhead

conveying system of the youngest generation.
It is a well-tried, indispensable short-distance
means of transport for a flexible and rationalised
flow of materials.
An electric monorail conveying system consists
of a networked track system that is adapted to
the desired transport route and the required
transport capacity. Running on these tracks are
individual powered load carriers. Power is
supplied to the drive motors via busbars
integrated into the track.
The advantages of an electric monorail
conveying system are clear.
? The individual drive unit for each carrier
permits carriers to travel at different speeds
and even to change these in rapid
succession.
? Individual material flow data for each carrier
can be stored in central or decentral
memories. This provides great flexibility in
respect of data management and scheduling.
? The medium "electricity" permits each load
carrier to carry out additional functions such
as lifting, lowering, rotating and gripping.
? The all-electric drive is very quiet, a
significant contribution to humanisation of the
workplace. Mechanical movement
sequences are carried out only when a load

Louis Schierholz GmbH, Bremen / Germany

carrier actually does need to be moved.

? Dynamic buffering permits components to be
brought together in time-shifted sequences.
? Transporting, sorting, buffer storage and
distribution are ideal task profiles for the
electric monorail conveyor.
? Reversing movements are possible. Long,
single-track stretches with a low transport
frequency can be achieved.
? Throughput times and costs are reduced
through concentration on a single,
permanently available conveying system.
? Each workstation can be supplied according
to individual requirements.
Adaptations to changed task profiles can be
easily implemented at any time.
Flexibility in operation and economic efficiency
in the field of modern material flow technology
are what distinguish an electric monorail
conveying system.

Electric Monorail Conveying System 625 /

635 from SCHIERHOLZ - the product of
decades of experience
It is the fine details that are the basis for a
successful whole and at SCHIERHOLZ that
means
? a computer-optimised aluminium profile for
the track - high torsional stiffness with
optimised use of materials.
? the top-running load carrier moves on a level
running surface - no point loads, thus making
for a more favourable load distribution and
less wear.
? special design of the running and
counterpressure rollers permits the load
carrier to climb ascents up to 90. Vertical
track lifts are now necessary only in special
cases.
? different operating voltages are possible and
secure the necessary flexibility depending on
requirements.
? adapted travel speeds can be achieved with
frequency converters on the load carrier
controlled via the busbars
? fast assembly and simple implementation of
changes in case of changed operating
conditions are made possible by the fact that
the suspension elements and all other
retrofittable items can simply be clamped into
the specially designed running track profile.
? all-electronic control of the carrier and of the
whole system. This control features a
process-oriented structure and opens up a
steadily widening range of possibilities for
the user that can swiftly be implemented
even on changes in requirements.
? an extensive modular-structured system
permits any desired flow of materials to be
achieved, even in existing factory premises.

Louis Schierholz GmbH, Bremen / Germany

Easily overlooked, but essential servicing

Wherever anything moves, this produces wear,
i.e. servicing work is necessary.
The people at SCHIERHOLZ thought of that
right from the start and created an electric
monorail conveying system that permits service
work to be carried out quickly.
? The load carrier can be simply lifted out of
the track at any point by releasing the guide
rollers.
? All electrical connections are plug
connections and can be disconnected in
seconds.
? The switchbox with integrated current
collectors can be easily detached and is
thus quickly exchangeable.
? Wear of the current collectors is monitored
completely automatically in a special control
station built into the track.
? A control permits the load carriers to be
diverted into a servicing track at selectable
regular intervals. Here they are checked and
serviced by specialists without impeding the
remaining transport flow.

ELECTRIC MONORAIL TECHNOLOGY

SYSTEM EHB 625 / 635
LOAD CARRIER

Function:
The transport of items of widely different
types and sizes.
The load carrier can be produced to match
requirements through the combination of
modular components: the powered trolley,
the free trolley, the connecting bar and the
loadbar. The load carriers can be stored in
line by buffering against each other or by
maintaining a fixed distance with the aid of
light or ultrasonic sensors or electrically
through division of the track into block
sections.
Technical features:
The load carrier of the electric overhead rail
conveyor is a so-called top runner. In this
type of carrier the drive and suspension
rollers roll along the top boom of the running
and suspension track. Guide rollers at the
side absorb lateral and torsional forces.
The design and structure of the electric
overhead rail conveyor load correspond to
VDI Guideline 3643 - the so-called C 1
Standard.
Louis Schierholz GmbH, Bremen / Germany

The load carrier is driven by a geared motor

that transmits its drive power to the running
and suspension track through friction grip.
The special design of the running and
counterpressure rollers permits the load
carrier to climb ascents up to 90.
The travel speed of the load carrier can be
adapted to the requirements of the track layout
by frequency converters that receive the
control commands via the busbars. This
variable speed gives the electric overhead rail
conveyor the necessary flexibility.
All electrical connections are designed as plug
connections and can be disconnected within
seconds.
The switchbox with integrated current
collectors can be easily detached and thus
permits a fast exchange. This avoids long
shutdown periods in case of any failure of the
control system.
The simplicity of the procedure for dismantling
the guide rollers means that the load carrier
can be taken out of the track at any desired
point.

LOAD

Standard load carrier

The basic load carrier of the system consists of
a powered trolley with a drive motor, a control
and the current collectors integrated into the
control housing. The load is attached directly to
the trolley.
The structural design of the carrier of the 625
System is practically identical to that in the 635
System and differs only in having a longer basic
housing and a larger diameter of the drive
wheel. The stocking of spare parts is therefore
also almost identical for both carrier types.
The engineering design of the carrier
corresponds to VDI Guideline 3643 (C 1
Standard).
Prior to delivery, each load carrier of the
SCHIERHOLZ electric monorail conveyor is
tested in a trial run at the works. All electrical
connections are plugged connections permitting
the parts to be exchanged in a very short time,
thanks also to full compliance with the modular
construction principle.
The special design of the running and
counterpressure rollers enables the carrier to
climb ascent sections at angles up to 90.

Standard load carrier

The basic carrier of this type consists of a
powered trolley with a drive motor, a control
with current collectors integrated into the control
housing, a free trolley (i. e. unpowered) and the
connecting bar. The load is attached to the
loadbar.
The structural design of the free trolley is
identical to that of the powered trolley with the
exception of the drive motor and the control
housing. The length of the loadbar must be
adapted to match the dimensions of the items to
be transported.
By using two trolleys or a combination of
several double load carriers it is possible to
carry greater weights.

running surfaces of the drive wheels and
extremely smooth and quiet running of the
carriers.
Every 200 mm the track is furnished with a hole
for cables to pass through.
The track can be used with the same
dimensions for Systems 625 and 635.

Technical features:
The expansion joint is necessary if differences
in temperature arise during operation or through
heating of the building or if the conveyor system
is routed through two buildings which do not

of the expansion joint is about 10 mm. If
greater differences are to be expected,
additional expansion joints must be integrated
into the track.
The expansion joint runs at an oblique angle to
the direction of travel and thus permits a gentle,

SUSPENSION FITTINGS

Short suspension fitting

(suspension to VDI 3643 C1)

Medium suspension fitting

Function:
The suspension fitting serves to fasten the
running and suspension track to the ceiling or to
the supporting structure.
Technical features:
The core element of the suspension fitting is the
suspension yoke. This can be hooked into the
track at any point and screwed tight.
A safety lug on the fastening plate of the yoke
prevents the track from slipping off if the screw
connection were to break; at the same time it
keeps the connection free of lateral forces.
Depending on the height of the system, the
suspension yoke is connected to the steel
supporting structure or to the ceiling via a
tubular construction or via a threaded spindle.
Screw connections in the suspension fitting
permit simple height adjustment of the track. Any

CONTROL

Electric monorail conveyors with their high level

of automation are inconceivable without the
corresponding electronic systems. The
SCHIERHOLZ electric monorail conveyor of
Systems 625 and 635 is therefore equipped
with standardised electrical and electronic
modules that permit rapid configuration and
implementation while maintaining transparency
of the system.
Power Supply :
Standardised units for feeding electric current to
the power and control lines, standardised units
for protection of the lines and corresponding
facilities to protect against mechanical damage.
Sliding contact conductors of the following
makes are used for both electric overhead rail
conveying systems:
? Overhead conductors FABA 100
? Vahle U 10
? Wampfler Programme 815
Each of these systems guarantees a high
degree of ease of maintenance and operational
reliability, also on transmitting the control
signals in the low-voltage range.
Control Logic :
Function units for the control of load carriers,
track switches, block sections of track, stop
points and the like as a central computer
control, as a programmable controller or as
hard-wired logic. The two last-mentioned
controls are attached directly to the
corresponding component of the conveyor
system.
These control concepts means a high level of
operational reliability and availability of the
systems. Depending on the scope of the
conveyor system, extensions or conversions of
the system can be integrated into the existing
control with minimum input.
Powered Trolley Control :
The modular design of the electrical equipment
of the powered trolley is oriented towards rapid
preventive maintenance. All electrical
connections are plug connections. The current
collector is integrated into the control housing
and the housing can be folded down and
Louis Schierholz GmbH, Bremen / Germany

unclipped via an articulation joint. In case of a

malfunction, it can quickly be detached and
replaced by a new control unit.
A second current collector for the PE conductor
contributes to the enhanced electrical safety of
the powered trolley.
Travel Speed Control :
Electrical units built into the control housing of
the powered trolley and activated via the
busbars (control lines) or by solenoid switches
permit the travel speed to be changed if polechanging three-phase induction motors are
used.
However, stepless variations in speed can also
be achieved with the aid of a frequency
converter located on the carrier. This unit
receives the corresponding control commands
via the busbars. The complete corresponding
modules of this control are accommodated in
the control housing of the powered trolley.
Powered Trolley Spacing :
Besides the powered trolley spacing system
operated by the control logic by energising and
de-energising block sections of track, there are
also two control and safety devices mounted on
the carrier itself
? the adjustable spacing unit that works
with light or ultrasonic sensors
? the mechanical spacing system that
works with collision buffers and proximity
limit switches.
The standard version always incorporates two
of these three systems.
Destination Control :
The design of the load carriers permits
information about the destinations to be carried
on the carrier itself, besides destination control
management via a central computer.
Corresponding data are exchanged via the
busbars (control lines).
Fault Signal Monitoring :
Monitoring system with display and printer for
any desired number of monitoring points.
Malfunctions are signalled by visual or audible
alarms.
