The three moment equation express the relation between the bending
moment at the successive support and the deflection. It is used for
solving indeterminate structures ( beams with at least three supports).

=(A2r2+2/3A5L2+1/3A6L2)-hc
=(A2r2+1/3MbL2 +1/6McL2)-hc
sub. 2, 3 into 1, the final expression is :
Ma(L1/I1)+2Mb(L1/I1+L2/I2)+Mc(L2/I2)= -6[A1r1/L1I1 +A2r2/L2I2 ] +
6[E ha/L1 +Ehc/L2 ]

(1)

where, A1, A2 = areas of BMD due to external loads

ha,hc= Settlement of supports A, B from B
Special cases:
If ha=hc=0
Ma(L1/I1)+2Mb(L1/I1+L2/I2)+Mc(L2/I2)= -6[A1r1/L1I1 +A2r2/L2I2 ]
If I1=I2=I then,
Ma(L1 )+2Mb(L1 +L2)+Mc(L2)= -6[A1r1/L1 +A2r2/L2 ]
If A and B are simply supported, then
2Mb(L1 +L2 )= -6[A1r1/L1 +A2r2/L2 ]

(2)

(3)

If the beam is extended, the effect of Ma and Mc will be

calculated and concentrated on the supports.

-For sagging condition , the sign of BM are positive
-For hogging condition , the sign of BM are negative
