Edinburgh Doors Open Day 2012

Saturday 22nd September

Choral Evensong

WELCOME TO THE ROBIN CHAPEL. Whether you come as part of a

Christian denomination or of none, all have a place within these walls
where the love of God dwells.
Every Sunday at 4.30pm the Chaplain and Choir of the Chapel sing the
service of Choral Evensong, with Choral Eucharist being celebrated on
the first Sunday of every month. As part of the Chapels interdenominational foundation we have regular visiting preachers from across the various Christian churches. There is an invitation to all to join us in worship
at the Robin Chapel.
Solemn Feast days, where appropriate, are normally transferred to the
nearest Sunday, or within the octave.

ORDER OF SERVICE
INTROIT
Sing we merrily unto God our strength, Make a cheerful noise
unto the God of Jacob. Take the Psalm, bring hither the Tabret,
The merry Harp with the Lute. Blow up the Trumpet in the new
Moon, even in the time appointed, and upon our solemn feast
day for this was made a statute for Israel, and a Law of the God
of Jacob. Alleluia!
Music: Sidney Campbell
Words: Ps. 81:1-

SCRIPTURE SENTENCE
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy
priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus
Christ. (1 Peter: 5)
HYMN
Christ is our cornerstone,
On him alone we build;
With his true saints alone
The courts of heaven are filled:
On his great love
Our hopes we place
Of present grace
And joys above.
O then with hymns of praise
These hallowed courts shall ring;
Our voices we will raise
The Three in One to sing;
And thus proclaim
In joyful song
Both loud and long
That glorious Name.

Here, gracious Lord, do thou

For evermore draw nigh;
Accept each faithful vow,
And mark each suppliant sigh:
In copious shower
On all who pray,
Each holy day
Thy blessings pour.
Here may we gain from heaven
The grace which we implore;
And may that grace, once given,
Be with us evermore,
Until that day
When all the blest
To endless rest
Are called away.
Words: Latin, before 9th Century, tr. John Chandler
Tune: Harewood (S.S. Wesley)

We confess to God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost,
that we have sinned in thought, word and deed, through our own
grievous fault. Wherefore we pray to God to have mercy on us.
Almighty God have mercy upon us, forgive us all our sins and deliver
us from evil, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and bring us to
life everlasting. Amen.
May the Almighty and merciful Lord grant unto you pardon and
remission of all your sins, time for true repentance, amendment of life,
and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
PRECES
O Lord, open thou our lips;
And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
O God, make speed to save us;
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world
without end. Amen.
Praise ye the Lord;
The Lords name be praised.
Setting by William Smith

PSALM 127
Except the Lord build the house:
their labour is but lost that build it.
Except the Lord keep the city:
the watchman waketh but in vain.
It is but lost labour that ye haste to rise up early, and so late take
rest, and eat the bread of carefulness:
for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
Lo, children and the fruit of the womb:
are an heritage and gift that cometh of the Lord.
Like as the arrows in the hand of the giant:
even so are the young children.
Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them:
they shall not be ashamed when they speak with their enemies
in the gate.
Chant by Sir John Goss

FIRST LESSON: Acts 10:1-18

Read by Liam Fraser, Verger.
MAGNIFICAT
My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit hath rejoiced in
God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his
handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall
call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me and
holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him
throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his
arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their
hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath

exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with
good things and the rich he hath sent empty away. He
remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he
promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world
without end. Amen.
Setting by Hugh Blair in B Minor

SECOND LESSON: Luke 10:30-35

Read by Simon Macintosh, Trustee of the Thistle Trust.
NUNC DIMITTIS
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to
thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation; Which thou
hast prepared : before the face of all people; To be a light to
lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world
without end. Amen.
Setting by Hugh Blair in B Minor

CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth : And
in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was
crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he
rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the
right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to
judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy
Catholick Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins:
The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen.
RESPONSES
The Lord be with you;
And with thy Spirit.

Let us pray.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord have mercy upon us.
The Lords Prayer (setting by Robert Stone)
O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us;
And grant us thy salvation.
O Lord, save the Queen;
And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.
Endue thy Ministers with righteousness;
And make thy chosen people joyful.
O Lord, save thy people;
And bless thine inheritance.
Give peace in our time, O Lord;
Because there is none other that fighteth for us,
but only thou, O God.
O God, make clean our hearts within us;
And take not thy Holy Sprit from us.
Let us pray.
COLLECT FOR THE DAY
O Almighty God, in thy glory we celebrate this thy house of prayer: we
praise thee for the many blessings thou hast given to those who worship
thee here: and we pray that all who seek thee in this place may find thee,
and, being filled with the Holy Spirit, may become a living temple
acceptable to thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
COLLECT FOR PEACE:
O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works
do proceed: give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot
give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and
also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies, may
pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our
Saviour. Amen.

COLLECT FOR AID AGAINST ALL PERILS

Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy
defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy
only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
ANTHEM
Let all the world in every corner sing, my God and King! The
heavens are not too high, his praise may thither fly, the earth is
not too low, his praises there may grow. Let all the world in
every corner sing, my God and King! Let all the world in every
corner sing, my God and King! The church with psalms must
shout, no door can keep them out; but, above all, the heart must
bear the longest part. Let all the world in every corner sing, my
God and King!
Words: George Herbert
Music: Kenneth Leighton

ADDRESS: The Rt Revd Dr Richard Holloway: "Prepare for Surprises"

PRAYERS led by the Revd Dr Kenneth Walker
Let us pray for the Church and the world:
Lord in your mercy:
Hear our prayer.
PRAYER OF KING HENRY VI
O Lord Jesus Christ, who hast created and redeemed me, and hast
brought me hither where I am: Thou knowest what Thou wouldst do
with me. Do with me according to Thy will, with mercy. Amen.
HYMN
All my hope on God is founded;
He doth still my trust renew,
Me through change and chance he guideth,
Only good and only true.
God unknown,
He alone
Calls my heart to be his own.

Pride of man and earthly glory,

Sword and crown betray his trust;
What with care and toil he buildeth,
Tower and temple fall to dust.
But God's power,
Hour by hour,
Is my temple and my tower.
God's great goodness aye endureth,
Deep his wisdom, passing thought:
Splendour, light and life attend him,
Beauty springeth out of naught.
Evermore
From his store
Newborn worlds rise and adore.
Daily doth the almighty Giver
Bounteous gifts on us bestow;
His desire our soul delighteth,
Pleasure leads us where we go.
Love doth stand
At his hand;
Joy doth wait on his command.
Still from man to God eternal
Sacrifice of praise be done,
High above all praises praising
For the gift of Christ, his Son.
Christ doth call
One and all:
Ye who follow shall not fall.
Words: Robert Bridges (after Joachim Neander)
Tune: Michael (Herbert Howells)

BLESSING
You are Gods temple, where the Spirit of God dwells. May He keep you
sound in faith, steadfast in hope, and strong in love. And so walk in love
as Christ loved us and gave himself for us. And the blessing of God
Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be with you, and all
those whom you love, this day and always. Amen.
FINAL RESPONSES
The Lord be with you:
And with thy spirit.
Let us bless the Lord:
Thanks be to God.
Music: E.W. Naylor

ORGAN VOLUNTARY: Franz Schmidt Hallelujah Praeludium in D
